Hi. I have recently gotten myself a 1986 HiLux dual cab (YN57). It started its life with a 3Y bolted up to a 4 speed manual. Has already had a 4Y / 5 speed manual swap done by previous owner. now im looking for information on engine & gearbox swaps... Not interested in the commodore V6 path. Looking more towards the 2.4TD from the surf or a 2.8 (3L) from later Hilux's. Has anyone done this. If so how straight forward OR complicated was it. Also looking to freshen up the interior and drag it into the present. Better seats, power windows and mirrors etc. Wondering if the gear out of a surf / 4Runner can be grafted in. I know this will be a massive project but I have time. Thanx in advance for any help / pointers you can offer.

Clean it up and enjoy it the way it is, unless you have a donor vehicle with everything you need ( and I mean everything ) to do a successful diesel swap it will cost you $$$.
