Fuel Filter Warning for 50 series Aurion Owners

Recommended Posts

Sorry I've been lazy lately, corona, stood down, getting half my normal wage, freezing dull grey Melbourne weather, can't go here or there, no gym, too cold to even ride a bike - miserable stuff really.

Anyhow I'm amazed at several things going on here. One is that @Tony Prodigy is right.

I rang several dealers & they're all quoting me the same huge retail price of $226.90 for the fuel filter, part # 77024-33180 which supersedes # 77024-06280 for the GSV50R-JET***. My dealer who I've know for years quoted me $40 less but it's still a big price compared to what they have been in the past for me doing Celicas & Camrys at about $60-80 a pop & they're all much of a muchness. They're an intank canister which holds the whole enchilada together & is relatively str8 forward to replace. Whats more unbelievable is that it's cheap compared to current design RAVs & Corollas I'm told !

Partsouq lists that # for $124 shipped & Amayama will not deliver to AUST which looks like an imposed restriction for that part type. There could very well be some sort of design/manufacturing restriction for these filters preventing others form copying it, I don't know. Then there's Wesfil/Cooper which maybe the Ryco part, I haven't looked into it yet. Strange also is that its not even a direct injection motor, it's virtually identical to the GSV40R.

I just spoke to Ryco regarding their omission for a fuel filter. I'm told it could be 1 of 3 reasons for it - patent, can't produce to set standard (don't believe that) or part of a complex module. I'm waiting for their development team to get back to me with an exact & definitive answer which could be a week away, they will also let me know if the filter is in the pipeline for manufacturing & retail sale 😐

I'm suspecting it's the same fuel filter for the Kluger, Lexus ES & Camry in other markets with the same 2GR-FE motor so it would be worth their while to make.

Hey mate, sorry to hear your situation there. I really feel for you and hope things improve so you can get back to some normality.

Although, Sydney isn't in a lock down as such, I choose not to go anywhere anyway so as not to put myself or my family at risk. This Covid thing really sucks. Who knows how long it's going to last.

I appreciate that you went out of your way to contact the dealer. I had a very frustrating encounter with another Sydney Toyota dealer. Brace yourself for this one:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ME

Hello,

I'm having a hard time trying to get a fuel filter for my GSV-50 Aurion.
Ryco don't make one for some very strange reason ( do you ?) and there is only one brand I found that do but it seems a little cheap and quality is unknown which leaves the Genuine Part.

Does the fuel filter for the 50 come as an assembly, ie, pump, sender etc ? or does it come as a separate fuel filter which will require disassembly and reassembly of the original sender unit ??

Can you provide a Trade price for the part I require please ?

Regards
Tony

DEALER

G'day Tony. Yes they come in an assembly that includes the pump etc.
Over $1600, we've never sold one.

ME

So how are the Toyota dealerships servicing the fuel systems on their Aurion ?
Surely they would sell the fuel filter separately to the pump etc.
It's ridiculous to suggest that in order to replace the fuel filter you'd have to replace the entire assembly.
Can you take another look if you don't mind.

Thanks

DEALER

I dont know sorry. I agree but I've doubled checked the part number.
Might best best to touch base with your local dealers service dept & ask what they do.

This was the extent of it. I didn't bother replying after this. Just threw my arms up and said " I give up"

What the heck is going on with this ?? How hard is it to get a straight answer ??

Anyway my Wesfil/Cooper fuel filter arrived today and I must say It looks pretty decent quality and it cost $56 delivered.

I have compared it to the Ryco one wrongly sent to me and they both look on par for quality.

Below are the side by side comparison. The one on the left is the wrong part (meant for the ASV50 Camry) and the one on the right is what the Original Aurion 50 filter should look like.

40 series Aurion do have a different fuel delivery system to the 50 series, so the 40 series owners can rejoice and take comfort in the fact that they won't go through the same B.S. I'm having to go through just to replace a damn fuel filter. It's ludicrous.

You can clearly see the short Vs Long filter sections. I suspect that Wesfil/Cooper has the monopoly to produce the 50 series filter. I may even consider a Genuine Part If I can get trade price it's $200. Would anyone else be crazy enough to pay that ?

$1600 for a completed assembly. They can go jump. Not gonna happen. Funny how the rep mentions that they've never sold one. Yeah, no **** sherlock.

Fully support what Tony is saying. Brisbane is supposedly in a better situation but I am busy social distancing. At least, I have a choice to stay at home as much as possible.

I reckon that those who get Covid-19 and survive will have their life expectancy shortened by about 10 years. Also expect the effects of Covid-19 to linger on for about 2 years before we have a "new normal". Better to be safe then sorry and prepare for the worst case scenario. Keep safe.

Getting back on topic, looks like the Wesfil part should fit the fuel pump etc.

I have also been having parts supply issues which are finally sorted out after a month delay. Covid-19 has certainly impacted the supply chain.

Much appreciated guys, the worst is not being allowed to go for a drive - I hate that.

Tony that Wesfil part looks ace, infact it looks the same as the OEM part attached. Where is the Wesfil part made ?

When I spoke to Ryco earlier today they told me that one of the reasons for not making the part could be as it's a part of a complex module & she quoted their OEM part # which I can now see as a kit (part 77020-06411) which is what you speak of above, it's not $1600 though . . . . see attached.

I can maybe see why they're highly priced, it's a multi-part contraption unlike the 1 piece canisters of old. I'm hoping to get some more info 2moro from another local dealer, stay tuned.

Wesfil/Cooper have their manufacturing plant in China, of course, as does everybody else. I would even hazard a guess and say Toyota may too in some part ?

I had a look and it seems that Ryco and Wesfil are under the same company called GUD Holdings ltd. So it's unclear why they wouldn't manufacture and market this particular filter under the more known brand Ryco ? To be honest, I suspect they all come from the same factory anyway. The Wesfil/Cooper filter looks practically identical to the Ryco one I have so it's probably true. I just don't understand the stone walling coming from Ryco regarding ONE filter. Just ONE. Their must be some political reasons for this, who knows.

It's just a ludicrous situation for what should be very simple. There's nothing special about a 50 series Aurion that would warrant a "special" filter and be so hard to make. Wesfil has made one it seems and Ryco being under the same banner as Wesfil are throwing out all this clap trap about design and copy restrictions rubbish.

The design of the 50 series filter is the same or close to most other in tank filters, they just come in a slightly different shape and dimension, that's all, so there's nothing inherently difficult there.

I appreciate your research ZZT86 ( don't know your name lol). The part numbers do help.

I am also still in shock over Toyota's $1,600 fuel pump/sender assy. Man that's killer stuff. I recently had to replace the fuel pump/sender assy on my 99 M3 and although BMW had discontinued this part some time ago, the Vendor was able to track one down for me in Germany (Genuine OEM) and that cost me a tad under $1000 with shipping ! So what the heck are Toyota on about wanting $1,600 ?? I think it's cheaper to own a BMW these days lol..

It's also funny how partsouq told me that they don't have a listing for my filter even despite me giving them my VIN. You were able to find it no problem.

Looks like I'm getting the short back and sides on this one :wallbash::laugh:

I have to totally agree. I know that I feel a lot better just going for a drive to a further bus stop instead of walking to a closer bus stop.

Anyway good sleuthing to get the part number and pictures for Tony.

While you are waiting to get back on the road, have a look at this YouTube video.

More planning ahead for retirement. This is my motivational song when I am in the office.

Probably gives you an idea what I would like to be doing when going for a trip to the shops in retirement.

Hmm, I wonder what it would be too. Do you have a GT falcon hidden away somewhere ?

Cool song by the way, you can hear the Beach Boys influence in Jan & Dean's songs. Very cool stuff. I love the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson is a genius.

I will have a few years to sweet talk the girlfriend into getting a turbocharged GR Yaris then some back to basic and advanced driving school lessons.

https://www.toyota.com.au/news/new-toyota-gr-yaris-rally-car-for-the-road#:~:text=The GR Yaris engine is,200kW and 370Nm of torque.

Reality is more likely to be cruising down to the shops in the Aurion. Maybe by then, I would have had the Y pipe modification done and fitted hi-flow mufflers etc.

Ashley, that Escort is now in desperate need of an oil change after almost 40min of torture, and a complete teardown as I reckon he's killed almost all of its life. Who would've thought all those 911's be taken uphill by a little ol' Escort & then lap some. Clearly all the other folk weren't trying. My little Hachi is similar, such a little giant killer, most people just don't realise how good it is 🙂

Tony, that info is provided with pleasure. I recently acquired same gen car so it'll help me out too although a fuel filter replacement is still some years away.

I always research the Repair/Service Manual for correct procedures & suss out the exact parts required from multiple sites whenever I do servicing or repairs to a new car I'm not familiar with like this Aurion GSV50R. I want to know for sure I'm doing it properly & not taking any unnecessary risks to myself or the car. These things are too damn expensive to screw up. I take my time & enjoy the work too.

PartSouq is actually a rippa site, even lists Aussie cars virtually up to the minute & lists all the parts on the vehicle. I usually cross reference my info with my local dealer & get his best price as I prefer to buy from him direct for quick turnaround & usually very competitive prices, but lately its all gone pear shaped. I'm always looking for the best price & prefer to buy genuine especially on a newish car.

That Yaris looks like fun, but it's so small & wonder of its safety credentials. It would scare me to drive it amongst todays traffic.

It was a ripper video. Actually enjoyed seeing the little Escort carve up the competition like that. Spa is an amazing racetrack too. I'd love to have a go there if it were possible..

I never imagined it would  be like pulling teeth to get a simple part. When a vendor's vehicle compatibility guide shows that it fits your model, that should be the end of it.

I only wonder how many others like myself had gone through the same thing. We just don't hear about it unless it's reported in a forum of some kind. Anyways, I have confidence in the Wesfil product and being very reasonably priced, I may just stick with it. As much as I love Genuine parts, Toyota are becoming a rip off for parts.

I have saved them in my bookmarks and will use their site again. Thanks for providing their link. I'd never heard of them till now. Thank you
