Oils Ain't Oils.

Recommended Posts

Years ago I'd just pick a 5L container of oil off the shelf (any oil) and I'm good to go but not today, holey crap Batman what happened, so many oils.

I've never owned a Toyota that burnt oil, so I haven't bought oil for years. I thought I'll get some top-up oil just in case I need it, I looked in the owner manual and it said...ow-20...5w-20...5w-30...10w-30 and 15w-40.  :shocking:

Then it says...In extremely low temperatures the engine may become difficult to start, so SAE ow-20, 5w-20 or 5w-30 engine oil is recommended...very confusing.

I rang Toyota who said they use ow-20, I couldn't find any, so I bought a 1Lt bottle of 5w-30 full synthetic which suits Toyota, didn't know getting some oil could be so hard.

What has happened that oils have been continuously developed to meet higher specifications being demanded by car manufacturers in order to meet more stringent fuel economy targets.

Your owners manual is the final guide. However, I refer to the recommendations in the Lube Guides of different oil brands for my specific vehicle. Not so confusing after you have done that.

Oils aint oils anymore that's for sure. Back in the earlier days the oil was rubbish to be quite brutal. That's why engines didn't last that long using dinosaur mineral oil. New oil technology is amazing and it's not only designed to lubricate, but to clean at the same time too. Admittedly, if you live in a very low temperature region where you have ice and snow, then 20w - 50 is stupid. It most certainly will need to be a 0W weight so the oil can be as thin as possible under those climatic conditions.

As we live live in a very temperate climate, just put the oil that it states on the oil cap and that's it. If it says 5W-30, then put 5W-30. If it says 0W-20, then it's 0W-20. Change the oil regularly and your engine will live a long and happy life, so will your wallet 😁

The new standard, it seems, has been developed for the ever growing reliance on turbocharging engines in order to meet the latest efficiency standards. Normally aspirated engines are still ok to use the GF-5 standard.

Turbo charged engines are suffering from this:

"low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and timing chain wear"

You can bin your oil stash when you only have a 2020 or later vehicle that uses 0W-16 oil.

I am using up my oil stash [more than enough for next 3 years for 2 driver and 2 backyard vehicles being mine and the girlfriend's] which is now predominantly full synthetic engine oil with the specification ILSAC GF-5.

I had to read the following article a few times to fully comprehend most of the details.

Definitely need to know which oils are compatible with your vehicle.

In the Sydney Metro we don't see snow or ice, so we don't have to worry about engine oil or coolant freezing.   If it were as simple as looking on the oil cap, that would be too easy.  Unfortunately the only thing it says on my oil cap is "oil" so I had to ring Toyota because the owners manual has five types of oil you can use.
