Hiace engine dying

Hi all

1991 manual 2.4l petrol Hiace - when I start it from cold in the morning it'll start, but over 5-10 seconds of idling the engine will gradually 'die' and then turn off as if it's not getting enough fuel. Second go it starts fine, later in the same day it'll start fine, and if I touch the gas during the 5-10 second period after the first start it'll be fine, so it seems like the engine isn't getting enough fuel on starting when it's cold.

Any similar experiences/suggestions?

If I recall that model was carbureted. If so, sounds like it could need a carb service or the fuel pump is starting to go bad. I assume you have the maintenance up to date, otherwise it could be something as simple as a dirty fuel filter. Try not filling the tank when it's close to empty as the crud in the bottom of the tank gets picked up and it contaminates everything. Try and fill up each time when it reaches quarter left on the gauge.  You can remove the tank to inspect and clean to rid this issue.
