Rattle in steering column

Hi folks. I have a 2007 Aurion GSV40R which has developed an annoying rattle in the steering column at approx 90kmh. It can be replicated by moving the steering wheel lightly at rest & appears to be in the sliding spline of the adjustable column. Is this a common issue? What would be the best way to get the spline apart to grease it? Front wheels have been balanced since the problem arose but that did not rectify the issue. Thanks in anticipation.

It's a common issue of the intermediate shaft. You need to pull the shaft out and re lube it with Lithium grease. Try and get the tube version as the spray can be messy.

There are a few youtube videos around on this.

Here's a couple I found.

Thanks, Tony for your input, I've looked at the videos but cant find one that shows how the upper sliding section is lubed on the GSV40R as that is where the noise is coming from on my car & it appears to be a complicated task to remove the column. I'll keep searching. Appreciate your help.

So it's not the intermediate shaft then. I haven't had one apart to be able to definitively say, but in saying that, I would remove the steering column to inspect it on a bench instead of contorting one self under in the foot well. It's not a difficult job to remove to be honest. Once it's out you can figure it out pretty quickly.

If you do decide to have a crack at it, could you post up some pics ? This would benefit others looking to do the same.

All the best mate Keith

If you do a Search on this Forum, you should find the threads about the intermediate shaft issue. I do recall one post where the solution was to tighten or replace the bolts. These are special bolts which can be sourced from Toyota.
