I have got a 2013 toyota kluger and we have been told by the mechanic that the engine has sludging. I am looking at putting a second hand motor in. I have been given a option of putting a Aurion motor in. Just after some feedback and suggestions please

More information is required so that we can provide meaningful/appropriate feedback.

How many kms has the engine done? How bad is the extent of the engine sludging? e.g. blowing white smoke on start up etc. What is the service history of the vehicle, particularly the oil change intervals etc?

What is the experience of this mechanic with Toyota vehicles, particularly the V6 engine? Why is the mechanic saying that the engine has sludging? Is the mechanic suggesting a replacement engine?

Desludging the existing engine is usually a more viable option.

Hi Colin, I agree with Ashley's questions mate, more information is needed to really give any advise. The sludgy engine can be treated depending on how bad it really is, Ashley has had vast experience with dealing with a sludgy motor so I am sure he will help once we get more info, so unless it is a lost cause changing an engine over from different models can have its own issues and costly.

Let us know what else you can and I am sure many will try too assist you

Hi Ashly i really appreciate your feed back. The engine has 135K on the clock by memory it missed  3 services. Its blowing whit smoke on start up, usually more if its been sitting for a while say overnight. The Mechanic is not a Toyota specialist he's just your run of the mill every day mechanic. I have had 2 opinions from 2 different mechanics the first one who services the car know originally told me to sell the car or replace the engine now he is saying to pull it out strip it down clean it a put new seals and bearings which it about a 5-6k Job  The second mechanic is telling me to put a aurion motor in as it is cheaper than a kluger motor and can get one with less Km's on it. If there is a desludging option i would be more than happy to look at that if it fixes it.

There are plenty of youtube videos on the best desludging methods. You need to be aware that whatever method you do choose, that it doesn't damage any of the internal seals. Choose a method that's not too harsh. I can't recommend any as I've never done it, but it's not an uncommon procedure and many have successfully desludged.

From this point on, I reckon, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Having only 135K on the ODO isn't much either to be honest, so the engine still has plenty of life left in it. The desludging process will be a long drawn out process, but hang in there it will come good eventually.

Had you had the valve cover off for inspection ?? How did your mechanic determine the level of sludgeness to warrant replacing the engine ?

Are you able to peer into the oil filler hole to see any sludge ? Can you upload some pics ?

I am going to very much disagree with what both of these mechanics are suggesting. Understandably, oil sludge has formed in the engine due to the neglected oil changes. Rather than repeat what I have previously posted, have a read of the posts for the following thread.

If you are DIY and can perform an oil change and oil filter cartridge change, message me and I can give you some advice on how to desludge the engine and deal with the white smoke on startup in a cost effective manner. Please note that it may still be necessary to remove and clean the front valve cover and the PCV valve. The engine oil pan may also need to be removed and the oil pickup thoroughly cleaned.

Hi Colin, I would suggest you chat with Ashley, his experience with desludging an Aurion is top of the shelf. It will in the long run be your best and cheapest option and also allow you to give the engine a really good look over while doing the filter and oil changes.

Best of luck mate
