Hey guys, just purchased a 1986 hiace commuter and for the life of me I cannot find the battery. Looked under passenger seat, behind passenger seat, behind drivers seat, in sliding door well... appreciated. Needing parts and service options soon...Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Rohan, Welcome to the forum, if I recall right it may be located under the front passenger seat under a panel in the floor, but I m sure the more brilliant minds on here can advise its location if it is not located there.

Yes Tony my old Tarago had it behind the drivers seat under a panel, I would be pulling all the floor matting up checking for screwed down panels as it needs a nice flat area to sit on but the cover can be shaped.

Tony , KAA, opened both these wells. LHS was exhaust and RHS was fuel filter, etc.

Ok, that's strange. How about sliding the driver's seat forward and looking under that ?

It has to be somewhere close to the engine bay. I'd even go underneath it and track back the cable from the starter motor.

I have also heard that they can also reside in the passenger side footwell. Not too sure about that one though.

The case of the mystery battery location is wonderful as it is not me trying to find it and losing hair in the process. I agree has to be closer to engine than back I just hope it isn't one of those starts with wishes models from Toyotas secret development workshop LOL

Sooner or later you will locate it mate for sure, do as Tony suggested and trace the wires back at least it will give you a direction to look following the power wire.

Good Luck

Following is for a later model Hiace showing the battery location under the front passenger seat. There are metal fastening clamps to be released and then you lift the base of the passenger seat. Refer figure 6E of this document.
