Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has painted their Aurion alloys black with spray cans.

I saw a 2010 Touring model parked with original alloys which had been sprayed in gloss black. It looked awesome.

There are lots of videos on YouTube about the subject but I am mainly interested in getting some feedback on the brand of paint and its durability.

Spray paint cans are rubbish. Sure it will look good, but only for a limited time before it fades and starts bubbling and peeling off.. Don't believe everything you see on YouTube either. Everyone thinks they know everything.

I find it really cringeworthy seeing people spray paint their wheels with cans. I understand if one is on a strict budget, and that's ok if you're willing to accept a sub standard job. Just don't expect it to be durable.

If you want to do it the right way, have them powder coated mate. The metal is prepared correctly and the finish will be as good as factory and last a lifetime.

Thanks Tony, it never occurred to me that I could get the wheels powder coated.

I'll get some quotes today 👍

Yes, of course you can. That's how the factory do it actually so it's the best and proper way to coat your wheels or any other automotive piece. You need the durability. Surface prep is also important. Make sure they prep them well. I believe they will either be acid tanked or media blasted. I don't recall, but the surface needs to be smooth and consistent for the best finish.

They will advise you anyway. Let us know how you get on. Love to see some before and after shots.

Powder coating can be expensive. You can get 4 new alloys from bob jane for $800

Correct Henstepper!

Also there's the cost of removing the tyres, delivery and pick up from the powder coater and refitting the tyres. Not to mention the car being off the road for days.

A new set of black alloys is looking like the cheaper and quicker option.

That depends on what wheels you prefer. If you have a particular set you'd love to keep, then yes get them powder coated, but if your not fussy about which style of wheel, then you can get a "made in China" set from bob Jane for $800.

Quality wheels are expensive and are worth restoring, but the throw away ones I described is the cheapest alternative.

Hi mate,

recently had my standard GSV50 Aurion SX6 17 inch rims done at the local panel shop.

Stripped the tyres and thoroughly cleaned before applying epoxy primer and two coats of black gloss. They also baked the spray job.

great finish, tuff as nails.

good luck, cheers.
