Hello y'all.

2008 prodigy, 230Kkm. Recent service.

Mildly rough idle, engine dash light on. Code reader shows P0303...cylinder 3 misfire.

Then it had the "check vsc system" message. vsc light and engine dash warning lights are on.

Daughter reports "the engine light flashes when I accelerate and it jolts a bit". Engine light doesn't flash at maintenance speed.

fwiw, added 7 litres 85ron+ethanol to a 3/4 full 98ron tank. Did that in the hope it might clean something up. A 20km drive later, the engine light remains on (not flashing) and the vsc message is gone but the symbol still lit. Daughter reports "there is a clear improvement".

Looking from the front of the motor, please confirm the position of cylinder 3. Adjacent to 1, so middle, but front or rear bank? I might pull the plug and coil if it's the front one.

Cheers

That video tells me bank 1, cylinder 3 is the rear, least accessible bank/cylinder. Good info, not so good news.

Do you remember a Toyota ad [years ago] around the response "Bugger".

Engine misfire causes include spark plug, ignition coil and fuel injector. When I checked my spark plugs as part of tracking down engine misfire, I found oil around a few of the spark plugs as a contributing factor. I also found a long 16mm swivel magnetic spark plug socket to be very handy. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/196756153269?_skw=16mm+magnetic+spark+plug&itmmeta=01JHYWNWBVX4JXZ7C6WAZRFFDT&hash=item2dcf94a3b5:g:3BMAAOSws8pnHuBU&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlqtUwJeOil2iRuVSCtyQOrqULI0EMgdE0a428A%2FFNAw%2FKD9hi2uQFLedafNJSbn%2Bp%2F8v7YkkPrwk%2FLCnBlEeH1XBEOuxRI3pEWxtouABez5uQ9KQf%2B4OJc%2FMxiKPMxxg0CRALap3ZJ4azh2jpPYIXWgexr9OtP53v8KvPIy6otDSy859N35OWs8Pnd4udqpCi7CFZVLebJRc%2BO0IgiqTpVM2tmErlndu1i8xDQP68j6wqsbSF%2BqS%2BXfvIa3AadyUrmg2d0gWwGnktyuIxKAM0HcQYqbvZm1G1Ztd%2FE1WeO6A%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR5jG19yPZQ

I have not yet replaced the spark plug seal gaskets but have them on my eBay watchlist. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/196589707493

Haha yes. Thanks for the reply.

If it was that simple it'd be done already. Getting all the other stuff off to gain access will take some time for me. Unsure if I'll have a crack at this as a bit time poor...I think I'll give the mechanics a call tomorrow. It had a recent service...hopefully they can take it in asap. (daughters car).

Poor performance, surging can also be related to dirty/clogged fuel filter

I forget the maintenance schedule for these, but in any car it's more of a 'do when you need to' routine

Thanks. I'm counting on the code being correct. 🤞 No apparent surging, just rough idle. It feels ok at a persistent 60kph but the engine warning light starts to flash at any acceleration thereafter. Slow and steady feels ok.

It looks like I will have some time after all...so I'll get some gaskets/seals/parts and have a go. This video seems pretty good.

This one too...

Very happy to report success!

I did it by just removing the cowl, didn't touch the plenum or anything else.

I only changed the one plug and coil. They both look fine. The plug was a NGK DILFR6D11. The coil was a VDO brand.

Replaced with the same plug $23 and a $55 coil from Goss Mechtronics.

I used the masking tape method to mark the wipers position on the windscreen. I removed the right side bonnet strut at the top and used a stick to hold it open from the from. It made it much easier.

Idle nice and smooth and the error code is gone. Fingers and toes are crossed.

Thanks for the comments.

Any photos or videos? Would love to be able to do the rear plugs and coils without the hassle of removing the intake etc.

Also, how do you order parts from the Goss Mechatronics website or did you get it from somewhere else?

I'll be doing my plugs at some stage in the near future. You can count on a detailed DIY from me, if you're happy to wait.

Hi Tony. I'm happy to wait. Aurion has just ticked over 172,500 and plugs aren't due until 180,000 so plenty of time.

This thread is worth a reading and consideration of what needs to be removed either as a minimalist approach or the most beneficial. Recent post by ZZT86 is a great example of an unexpected bonus to reveal an improperly installed gasket during manufacturer assembly.

Mine's done just over 166K. So a while to go yet..
