There seems to be a big increase in car thefts in Australia and I'm wondering about fitting an anti theft gear shift lock to my RAV4 GX . I'm originally from South Africa where car theft was/is huge on all and any vehicle type - new or old. Many anti theft systems were used and discarded as the thieves broke through almost any system that came up. The very best system we found was the gear shift lock which secured the gear leaver in either reverse, for manual shift, and park for autos. The lock and key was bolted to the chassis to one side of the gear shift, under the carpet etc. and the U shackle is made of super hard steel etc and locks through two holes.

The top mounted key style has storage clips on top to store the shackle when driving. This is the type I used on a couple of cars in South Africa.

The invisible type has a hidden pin which slides behind the gear leaver, preventing it from moving into any gears.

I cannot find anything like this searching online in Australia.  Do any of you know if they are available, perhaps under a different name?

I'm also wondering if insurance companies would recognise this as good security for a reduction in fees. They certainly do in South Africa.

I can only find  a Taiwan supplier called One Lus International. If you look up the details online they provide measurements and installation instructions.  I have emailed them for price and shipping costs.

The bar that clamps over the steering wheel was totally useless as they would just smash the steering ring to remove it. They found ways to remove the handbrake locking bar across to the gear lever too.

Maybe this will generate some thoughts for Aussies.

Nice equipment - but indications are that most vehicles presently tend to be stolen by young people who break into your house to steal the keys so don’t leave the lying around. But I guess if they do locate them these devices would create a great hinderance to having your car stolen.

True, but it's not the only way they get stolen.  We used to experience cars being stolen within minutes of parking it at a supermarket.  It's coming here too.
