Hello, I’ve always loved Toyotas and have had a few over the years. I love them because they last forever or they did. My son now has my old Toyota Hilux 4WD Ute and it’s still running with the third engine.  I had my mum‘s Toyota Camry which got me to uni and then went to my son to get him to uni. My dad has a Toyota Camry 2003 that I’m getting assessed for a roadworthy. My question to the forum is that my precious 2016 RAV4 GLX diesel auto - that has never ever given me any issue until two weeks ago. It overheated slightly on the way to work and when checked when I got there - the coolant was barely  noticeable. I rang my Toyota service Centre who told me to bring it down and that it was probably nothing, as it was booked into a service.
I’m just needing a glimmer or hope or some suggestions as to what I should do and whether or not anyone else has encountered this issue and what the best advice is with regard to potentially repairing it. The Toyota service Centre told me that RAV diesels built in 2016 had this flaw that when they reached about 230 to 250,000 km that the diesel motor would pack up exactly as mine has done and suggested I get a new car. I cannot afford a new car and I love my car and it does not make any sense to me that when it’s not losing any oil and it wasn’t obviously losing any water and had not played up until that one glitch that morning that this means it’s stuffed. I even complained to Toyota head office and they basically said “well these things happen”. My thoughts are that if they knew that this was an issue with the diesel RAV built that year. Why didn’t they say something to me prior to 200,000 K? So I could’ve traded it in instead of making me pay lots of money getting a Toyota service every 10,000 kms. Then tell me it’s kaput . I am sad and beyond belief because now I am currently driving my 30 year-old VS Commodore which is definitely not reliable and only good for short trips . I’d be so grateful for any suggestions that anyone has.

You asked for a glimmer of hope. I immediately thought of these 3 products.

https://www.nulon.com.au/products/cooling-system/stop-leaks/permanent-head-gasket-repair

https://penriteoil.com.au/products/block-and-cylinder-head-seal

https://www.kseal.com/au/products/k-seal-ultimate

I have used a different K-Seal product for coolant leaks on a vehicle and it worked. However, it did need a repeat of the treatment after a year or 2. No direct experience with using a product for a vehicle with a blown head gasket.

My preliminary research is that these types of products are very dependent upon the degree of repair needed [refer Nulon product details] plus following the specific directions for application. Product is not going to last on engines that are driven hard.

Best to consider it as a workaround until the head gasket is replaced.

I feel your pain, not fair given they're usually bombproof. If it's a known flaw, perhaps they should fix it free of charge or at least 50% off.

I don't know why they change stuff when it ain't broke. My sister has the 2013 RAV4 TD with a very similar engine that's nearing 300K kms, still looks, smells & drives like new.
