  1. Hi all, I know that shock absorbers have been discussed extensively previously, but I wanted to ask about installing shock absorbers. I had my car (Gen 4 Camry V6) serviced today and the dealer said that my RHF shock absorber was leaking and needed to be replaced. So I've decided to buy a pair of KYB Excel-G shock absorbers and replace both the RHF and LHF shock absorbers myself. Firstly, is this okay considering that I will not be replacing the rear shock absorbers that are stock? Secondly, has anyone replaced their own shock absorbers before and is it very difficult? I will be doing it with my dad who's pretty good with tools so I think I should be alright... Also, I need to replace my rear sway bar bushes. I was also going to do this myself (with my dad). Again, is this very difficult? Thanks, Igor
  2. No worries mate =) Good luck with the Sportivo!
  3. Your best bet is probably to get lowered springs professionally fitted. King springs are very popular and any good suspension place will fit them for you. You simply have to choose how much you want your car lowered by and I think that you can choose the stiffness of the springs as well - you'd probably want them reasonably stiff if you're towing a trailer. I've heard good things about Wheelworx (look them up on Google). They have one of SA's largest (if not the largest) range of wheels, tyres, suspension parts etc. and will be able to lower your car for you. It'll probably cost you around $400 - $600 fully installed, depending on where you go. Your other option is to get coilovers (I'm not sure if these are legal in SA, so you'd have to check). Coilovers are VERY stiff and allow you to change the height of your car in about 1hr. However, coilovers are quite expensive (around $1500 - $1700 installed) and are generally only needed if you're going to take your car to a track. Hope this helps :) P.S. Please correct me anyone if I have got something wrong.
  4. In reply to the original post, I get the same with my gen4, my dad gets the same in his Hiace and my friends get the same in their cars (not all Toyotas). I think it's more so a measure to prevent you simply stopping somewhere as soon as the needle hits "E". If you think about it, quite a few people run their cars until the needle is at "E" and if there was actually no fuel left in the tank the car would obviously just stop - so what I'm trying to say, is that it acts as a "buffer" until you can get to a petrol station =)
  5. Apologies Corhijas for not getting back to you about the cruise. I've been bogged down with school work like mad and I don't think that I will have any time on weekends to go for a cruise for another few weeks at least =( I'll post on this topic again probably in a couple of weeks time when I actually have some time to organise a cruise. Sorry again =( Igor
  6. Those photos with the swirl marks look pretty average mate. I'd definitely be taking it up as high as it takes to get Toyota to fix it.
  7. That sounds pretty good to me, however unfortunately this coming weekend isn't any good for me anymore =( Maybe Sunday 6th September? gday, sounds good, let me know later next week and well see what we can do cheers No worries mate =)
  8. That sounds pretty good to me, however unfortunately this coming weekend isn't any good for me anymore =( Maybe Sunday 6th September?
  9. Yet again I've stumbled upon this topic, lol. I think it kind of got ditched again... Anyway, if a few people are keen for a cruise (even if it's just 3 or 4 of us) we should get one going. Hopefully we'll attract more members along the way =) Would you guys be keen to go for a cruise through the hills on a Sunday? I was thinking either this Sunday (30th August) or maybe in a few weeks. Let's set a date and stop putting it off =) Igor
  10. Hi guys, I know that this might have been discussed before, but I was looking around on ebay and found this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Performance...sQ5fAccessories It's a performance chip, which they claim will increase engine power by about 35 HP, increase fuel economy and torque. Has anyone come across these before or what's the general concensus on performance chips?
  11. Sorry to bring up an old post guys. I wanted to ask you addy287, with the set up that you have i.e. pod in the bumper with the resonator removed, with the top resonator still installed, is the sound from the engine (under acceleration) much louder? Because I think I might try your set up on my Camry (same as yours, except late 1997 model). Thanks
  12. Hi guys, noticed that this topic has died down a bit, so I thought I'd ask about a cruise again. Should we set a time for a cruise e.g. a Sunday in the next few weeks or something? We could meet at a shopping centre car park and then take the cars up to the hills. What do you think?

    Camry struts

Sorry to but in, but I've been getting similar issues with my 1997 MCV20 Camry and like you said, it sounds like it's coming from the top of the suspension set up i.e. possibly the strut hats. How much would they cost the replace (roughly), can I do it myself and where can I get a pair? Thanks :)
  14. We normally get our tyres changed about every 3 years. The last set we had on our Camry were Kumho 769s, which lasted a tad over 80 000 km's! So we stayed with the Kumhos and are now running KH18s, which are about 1.5 years old and still going very strong - about 60-70% tread left =)
  15. I have a 1997 MCV20 Camry and just had my steering rack replaced with a brand new one because it was also cracked and leaking. I can't find the receipt for it at the moment, but from memory, it cost around $830 including all parts and labour. Hope this helps. EDIT: I just had a look at my receipt and it cost me $839.29 to get the entire steering rack replaced, a wheel alignment done and new oil put in (with labour). I had this done at an authorised Toyota dealer in SA (Peter Kittle Toyota). Hope this helps :)
  16. Thanks, might help =)
  17. Okay, I'll have to give it some thought then, because I know how rare GTP Camrys are these days. I've only seen 2 in the last year here in Adelaide.
  18. Just a quick one though, if I was to get KYB shocks with King springs, what type of KYB shocks should I get for a comfortable ride quality, but something that is still relatively firm for "enthusiastic driving" through the hills (Premium, Excel-G, Gas-A-Just or AGX)?
  19. Okay, thanks for your help. I had a read on the suspension forum on Auscam and that helped a lot =) So i won't ask you the same questions, lol.
  20. Damn, these GTP kits are hard to come by! I found a similar kit from Instant Spoilers in Lonsdale SA, but I saw a news story on the business and how bad their service was, so I don't want anything to do with them. Plus I think the business has since closed down. And I don't want a bonnet scoop unless I actually have a need for it (which I probably won't seeing as the car doesn't have any top mounted intercoolers, lol).
  21. Okay, that helps. Just a quick one, what brand/type of shocks would you suggest? Because I get the feeling that my suspension is going to need an upgrade soon as it is quite "creaky", although I'm not sure how bad this is. Igor
  22. Thanks for the help guys =)
  23. Hi guys, I have a 1997 MCV20 Toyota Camry V6 CSI and seeing as I am probably going to have the car for a while, I am debating whether or not I should do some upgrades on it. If I leave the engine standard, what sort of upgrades would you suggest on a budget of around $800? I was thinking of some Whiteline sway bars (front and back), slotted DBA brakes for the front with new brake pads (maybe Bendix for all four wheels) and a Whiteline strut tower bar. How much will this improve the handling of the car? I'm not sure that I should lower the car because I don't want to scrape on bumps or going up/down driveways etc. - what do you think? Igor
