  1. I wouldn't like this problem passed on to anyone, it truly sucks when you fork out so much money for what you think would be a reliable family car! After 2 weeks of our Rav being at the Toyota Dealership Service centre they called yesterday and said the bad ECU had been replaced along with a faulty coil (faulted due to the ECU fault apparently - dubious) and the car was now running perfect but they suspect the transmission is damaged and not safe to drive. I decided to go to the dealership and inspect the car myself. I spoke to the mechanic for about 20-30minutes in the car while it was idling in drive (didn't miss a beat) and then drove it only to find that it wasn't struggling to change/select the right gears but only slipped into 3rd from 2nd (ever so slightly) when you were to really floor it. After being told on the phone that the car needed a new transmission the mechanic then said you could probably nurse it or never have a problem with it for the next 10 years, he was merely flagging the problem he'd found/noticed. I thanked him for the thought but told he we'd never drive it like a Supercar and I had nothing to lose to drive to it 'may or may not' fail completely. He agreed! After some discussion of the situation and how unhappy I was over the ordeal they believed Toyota 'should and could' fix the gear box free of charge (sceptical they said this though to see the back of me and we'll see). So, 2 weeks later, they replaced a fuel filter (as they believed it was contaminated fuel which caused the stall/idle/power loss), drained the fuel tank and aired it, replaced the ECU, cleaned/lubricated the valves and then replaced just one coil at a total cost of $2800 gst included! I can't help but wonder if maybe it was just a faulty coil and I could have been charged only $400-600, but they are the experts and you take your car to them for honest practical service right?! $2800 seems like a lot of money to be ran-around over 2 weeks, but in the end I'm happy to have the car back in my own hands and will monitor it very closely and decide where to next. I am still unhappy with the service I received and the lack of information I was relayed and worst of all Toyota Australia's lack of support and responsibility for a blunder they are certainly aware of (ECU/Transmission). As much as I love the Rav4 I'm now faced with the decision of either riding this problem through or buying a different vehicle, not sure where I stand yet :( Cheers, Shagsy. Ps. I have kept a record of everything I have gone through so if any further problems with the Transmission arise I'll definitely be taking it further, like Consumer Affairs,
  2. Hi all, I'm a bit late on this topic but I also have a 2003 Rav4 which has just had the ECU replaced and a possible transmission problem, just wondering how everyone stands with their situation on this and whether anyone took it further to Consumer Affairs. The service and support I've received from the Toyota Dealer and Toyota Australia has been shocking, not to mention the stress mentally and financially it has had on us! The bizarre thing is I still don't know if they really needed to replace the ECU, either way, I've asked for the old ECU and plan on testing it back in the car to see how honest they really have been as I lost a lot of faith dealing with them :( Cheers, Shagsy.
  3. Hey, Blind Kid Seeks, Approx 108,000ks I'm the second owner with the previous lady owner purchasing from new and having no troubles. When I first experienced this problem I drove for no more than 15ks with only the stall/idle problem so I really don't understand how the transmission can be stuffed, with a new ECU in it?! I just spoke to the dealer and they say they've fixed the idle/stall problem but the gears are now dropping back and forth, my understanding is the ECU should have fixed this if the transmission hadn't blown up (wouldn't the gears slip etc rather than change erratically? Hence, ECU should fix the gears). The transmisson only freaked out a couple of times when the problem first happened, it was really just the idel/stall and problem accelerating. Hope I'm making sense :) Cheers.
  4. Hi all, first post for me and not a pleasent one. I have a 2003 2.2ltr Rav4 which has been with a Toyota dealer for the past 2 weeks with an idle/stall/acceleration problem and after being told it was first contaminated fuel, then ECU, then VVT, then a faulty coil and have now been informed that the car is running perfect besides a transmission problem in struggling to select the right gear! Have been told it needs to be replaced. I've read the forums regarding this problem that has happened to quite a few members and now I'm in the same boat, wonder what advice they have in going about repairing it and also getting financial assistance from Toyota as we purchased the car privately four months ago to be used as a family car and are now looking down the barrel at an extra cost beyond us :( I have spoken to toyota over the phone and they simply said they will not assist me due to no warranty but I argued that not too many people have warranty on a six year old car and it's unacceptable for this problem to even occur. Sorry to bring up and old topic, but my stomach has dropped over this outrages situation for all affected! Any advice etc is appreciated? Thanks a million, Shagsy. Ps. Did a group ever take this problem to Consumer Affairs as some had discussed, if so, what was the outcome?
