  1. Ouch.... that really hurt man :P :P :P

All I've got is the 14.9 from HSV but no printout (but slightly worn clutch) and not me driving of course. :(

When the clutch, flywheel and Unichip is done I will then organise something probably with HSV again. Probably hand over the keys again too so as to see what it really can do without my poor excuse for shifting. I'm confident they'll get low 14's with it. Heck in the states Celica's with similiar mods have consistently run high 13's.

This time though I will pre arrange it so as to get a printout or something instead of last time being spur of the moment and nothing.

But you & Shao's cars will pretty much be the same so I think it would come down to who has the best coat of polish!

Isn't this whole modding thing fun :D

  2. Bah!! That "reviewer" is a clown. But look at the positive side: More SP23's on the road to destroy.

Yeah but find one that wants to go you. They tend to just look the other way and ignore you <_<

They probably were all excited when first taking delivery of their sp23, but after running a couple of people discovered it ain't as quick as what the reviewers make it out to be, and so now are less likely to.

I work over near the Mazda head office and come across many on the road. They take on echo's, Civics, Lancers etc but nothing quicker. I've seen the same car drag the above at each set of lights but when I've worked my way up next to him he has lost the desire all of a sudden :(

That being said I do know of one being turboed at the moment, with front intercooler and going to run approx 10psi boost. This one is going to be quick! The guy is spending about 8K to do it properly.

  3. One of the Melbourne Herald Sun reviewers said pretty much the same thing about the Stivo on his one off drive. The a month later Toyota gave him one to use as an everyday car for a couple weeks. When it came time to give it back he did not want to, he said he had grown to really appreciate the car.

It's just one of the those cars that you have to learn to drive to appreciate it. A one off drive really just does not show you its true strenghts.

I also bet that drive was pre-recall. Now it has much better torque down low!

  4. It has been raining here all day so it hasnt been the best day to get the recall work done. But needless to say in the wet the wheels spin when im in a straight line now when i put the foot down in 2nd gear.....and 3rd almost looses grip (WITHOUT LIFT!!!!)

Certainly feels like there is almost a new mid range cam when you are between 4000 - 6000 RPM.

Havent had a chance to play in lift yet due to the weather. I will save that for the weekend ;)

So far I'm impressed. Feels like a new car altogether. 8 out of 10 rating so far with dry tests to come :D

    I second that.

last night in the dry the car went fantastic. In lift in first I was losing traction, the car never did that before. Then I lined it up with my brothers Type-R , something I have done many times in the past, and victory to me all 3 times. His car this time does not get any real jump on me as in the past and in Lift I pull away. He even agreed that in Lift my car pulled away better than before where it used to just nudge away slightly.

In the wet today I could not get any form of traction with more than 1/2 throttle and even in second as the car hits Lift it would instantly break traction and I would have to back off to regain it. Tried to keep it in 2nd once but the car went nowhere and quickly bounced of the rev limiter!

I would have to say the new computer in conjunction with the mods works very, very well.

With the TOMS flywheel on the way and the performance muffler in development I am getting excited as to how hard this car is going to go. Throw the unichip in once the other two things are fitted and the old heart is starting to pound already

  5. Sure, its got no force induction...

for a 9sec pass is very good.

Only thing is, was it running NOS?

You can do anything to the original engine in that cars category except forced induction!

So yeah probably running NOS or an equivelant brand. And probably dumping it into the intake manifold through something the size of a fire hose :D

  6. is it a factory clucth or the TRD one u were talking about??

F@ck the factory clutch. Slip... Slip... Slip :(

Nothing but good feedback on the TRD unit & bad feedback overseas on the stock clutch, besides it would probably work out cheaper than the standard one knowing Toyota Australia's pricing!

Besides with the grinding we get at times swapping gears, and who knows long term what that will do to the gearbox, we felt it more logical to get the stronger clutch!

  7. When I drove Peekays car with the Unichip Lift never felt as noticeable as mine without the unichip. This is because the unichip fixes the torque hole from 4000-6000 as side to side Peekays certainly was quicker than mine.

With the unichip the cars timing is advanced to approx 27 degrees where as standard is about 21. The new ECU is advancing the timing to 24 degrees so is doing about half of what the unichip dos to a standard stivo, hence filling in the torque hole somewhat and taking away some of that noticeable engagement point.

And yes the unichip will still be worth it especially if you have other mods as you will be able to tune them into the car fully something the new ECU does not do!

  8. I will try to find the link over lunch.

What's scary is he's on the wheels that came with the car :o There is plenty of wheel spin off the line but it seems he doe's not bog it down at all. I wish I could drive like that!

He also utterly destroys an Integra type R (the previous shape one) on the video.

  9. Hi guys,

Peekay and myself were searching the web for info on 2zzg clutch issues when we came across a video of what has to be the quickest N/A 2zzg (celica) out there.

The mods were Injen CAI, TRD Headers & exhaust, SWR clutch & Fidenza lightened flywheel, Power FC ECU replacement, MWR hardened valves & valve springs plus an upgraded oil pump.

The car has a recoreded 1/4 mile of 13.6 secs and a 0-60mph of 5.8secs.

This guy has put together a movie of some of his drags and all I can say is wow :o

I have never seen a 2zzg launch like this before, this guy is perfect at it. In 1 of his drags he is up against a WRX and matches it off the line and within the first 50 metres easliy starts pulling away. In other's he does a 350z turbo, RX7 even an AMG Mercedes.

On the incar shots you can see him rev out to 9000rpm & on gear changes only drops to about 7500rpm. Awesome.

I will try and find it again to post the link here for all to enjoy.

  10. 215/45 17's work perfect on mine. Although I am getting the slightest of slight rub on the front drivers side (but I have to be pushing very hard and hit a major sharp dip in the road). It seems the spring on that corner has settled approx 6mm more than the other 3. The guys that did the suspension are thinking it's just a bad spring & will probably replace it. The others are perfect no rubbing even with 3 in the car.

Had my speedo tested by some cops with a radar gun this morning. These guys are always parked out front of work as there is a Ford performance place up the road and a lot of idiots.

I told them I had just done my wheels and was concerned it put my speedo out so they said drive by at 60 and they would pop their laser on me. At exactly 60 on my speedo ( I flashed my lights) they said I was doing 60 on their readout. Spot On :D

Oh and the to cops loved my wheels, but said they do not want to see me speeding around here :(

  11. Hey Influx,

    really? not at all?

hehe...coz i'm thinking of going the coil overs...

oh...but what's the offset of your wheels?

    mine are really out...

    Chris

If your offsets are really out then you only have the 2 options of either raising the car a bit or new wheels. If they are rubbing that bad it can be dangerous. I have seen a prelude blow a front tyre through a high speed corner because the car was too low with wrong offsets. The Guard just sliced through the tyre and it was not pretty.

One thing to check is in the past King Springs have had a nasty habbit of settling a lot lower than the claimed drop. Maybe they have settled lower on yours.

  12. If Toyota removes you CAI then they are breaching your legal rights. This recall is for a fault/mistake which has occurred in production of the vehicle.

Under Australian law they must rectify this to bring the vehicles back within the ADR regulations the cars were tested to. Nothing done to the car can stop this from happening as no works performed to the said cars caused this fault. It was a manufacturing error carried out by Toyota!

If you had a warranty issue which a modified part may have contributed to then Toyota has legal grounds to object.

The Service managers who insist the cai be removed are to put it simply "D!cks". In my experience, and if you ask many people in the car industry most Service Managers are not really up to the job they perform.

The friend of mine that manages a Toyota dealer recently had to advertise for a new service manager and was bitterly disapointed with the applicants. Not one respondent met 50% of his base criteria but was forced to appoint one of them as the position desperatly needed to be filled. Now he has the headache of trying to force this guy up to spead and to perform at what he deems an exceptable level.

  13. Unfortunatly, if you talk with people in the know when it comes to performance engines, Toyota may have cut a couple of costs with this engine.

I remember reading a translated article a couple of years back of an interview with a couple of Honda engineers responsible for the Type-R development work.

They were specifically asked about the 2zzg as it had just won an international engine award. Their thoughts were interesting.

Overall they believed it to be a very good engine design that had true potential for greatness but was being held back by decisions to cut the costs of production. Some parts are working at close to 100% of capacity and don't have the available reserves to accomodate too much more load or many fluctuations. The oil pump was one part they did make mention of, believing the engine should be utilising a much larger/stronger pump as the 2zzg requires more from the oil pump than your typical engine.

The valves were also highlighted as a part suitable for road use but not much more than that. But again it was their thought that this was to meet pricing targets and to fit in with the production equipment already in place. Apparently although it is a massive price hike to use a stronger material for the valves etc compared to what is currently used the cost to put into place the equipment to produce those parts is staggering and would involve a higher proportion of manual labour.

If I remember right their estimate was in the ballpark of $1200-$1400 US dollars per engine to manufacture for peak tolerances.

There recomendation was for new valves with upgraded oil pump. With this higher compression pistons/rings etc could be safely utilised for better lower end torque and higher end power. Although producing more power the engine would be operating with a greater margin of safety so as to allow it to handle the fluctuations caused by driver errors and unforseen circumstances more easily.

It is this mentality that I do like about Honda. That is why my brother can belt the crap out of his Type-R and it just keeps on screaming back at him "is that all you got... Go me harder I dare you", but I guess you do pay for that privealage.

Oh.... and I believe TRD now do a package that very closely matches what their recomendations were. Apparently gives approx 20-25kw at the flywheel and around 215nm of torque at 6400rpm. But I believe if you need to ask the price then you probably can't afford it! Ouch :(

Damn though... That would be fun, especially combined with the Lightened Flywheel & Clutch, CAI, Extractors and a Unichip.

Maybe I should look at increasing the morgage again... Now how do I go about bringing that up with the wife!!!!!

  14. TOYOTA TEAM AUSTRALIA (TTA) aka those developing the exhaust..heheh.. ;)

What are your objectives for the new exhaust?

eg: MAX POWER? MAX TORQUE? Minimal noise? Deep note?

    Thanx

    Chris

All going well hopefully more torque between 3000-6000rpm and then an even greater increase in HP & torque in lift. All with a nice deep tone but not loud.

It can be done as TRD achieved it with the celica. They just do not do it for our car.

  15. I agree man, well its kind of different for me becuase I have not experienced the issues but even now knowing what I know about potential issues its still a great car to own.

My last car went back to the dealer 25 times in the 24 months I owned it, I bought the thing brand bloody new, I paid $19,000 cash for it and most places offered $6,000 trade in only 2 years later, Toyota gave me $11,000. NO recalls were done on the thing NO quality in the service and NO apology from them for such pathetic service, they even made me pay for a loaner while they fixed my car, we are talking incorrect welds on the back end resulting in a 'floating' back end, VERY dangerous. We are talking the sump being misallinged after a service and oil everywhere, we are talking a stereo replacement 9 times yet no one ever listened when I suggested the elcetrics could be the issue rather than 9 brand new stereos, we are talking engine cut outs and being told "If you can't get it to us within 10 k's of cutting out then we cant help you. 3 sets of shock replacements, 2 sets of smashed bearings, 4 sets of tires due to the wheels putting themselve out of allignment constantly, I only did 80,000 k's on the thing, I never thrashed the thing or went off road, most of my driving was freeway driving to work and back about 120 K's per day.

When I called the head office, the guy outright accused me of lying, they told me you have to replace your break pads every 20,000 K's and I said my brother (commodore owner) and my dad (falcon owner) both have cars heavier than mine and they get over 100,000 out of a set of pads and the guy said I was lying and had no idea because he used to be a break specialist and all cars wear pads out within 10,000 - 20,000, they also said I had to replace my discs at every pad change. I was lied to, I was insulted and I was treated like an idiot.

Suddenly the sportivo looks pretty damn good :) Best car I ever owned :).

Sounds like a brand new BMW & then a brand new Volvo I have owned.

And before you say it the volvo was a pretty cool car. and no it did not come with a hat! :D
