    Sat Nav

I tried out the Satnav over the Anzac day weekend, driving from Sydney to Ulladulla and back. I took a portable TomTom for comparison, and boy, did it drive the family mad! Two sets of voices, telling us when and where to turn. Usually, the Kluger GPS voice came on first, followed by the Tom Tom, making it sound like an echo. On the Princes Highway, the Kluger GPS did not use the highway speed, and kept interpreting it as a city road (avg speed of 50kmph) and over-estimated the travel time. On the way back, however, I came back through Moss Vale and got on to the Hume Highway. On the Hume Highway, it interpreted it as a highway (avg speed of 90 kmph), and was much more accurate on the timings. BTW, I have a Gen 1 (2006) Kluger Grande, using Sensis map v15. Interestingly, when I took the car on unsealed roads to Pebbly beach, the Kluger GPS got lost completely, and kept showing my position significantly away from the road I was supposed to be on. The Tom Tom, albeit with a weak signal, still plotted my position quite accurately.
  2. Yellow Pages + Phone = Good deal on Tyres ;) Unfortunately, these tyres are expensive. I replaced 2 tyres just before Easter. In hindsight, I should have shopped around. But I got it changed at Bob Jane as it is the closest to where I work. I paid $325 a tyre for Michelin Energy LX4 225/65/R17. The original price they quoted was $360. They also offered me on that size a Kumho for $270 (he said he could do a deal for about $250) and Bridgestone Dueller for $360 (before haggling). I also saw Yokohama tyres for that size advertised for $289. Not sure if I got a decent deal or got ripped off. But I was in a hurry as I was driving away over a 1000ks for Easter and two tyres were nearly bald.

  4. Thanks for the advice. I have already got the wired sensor light going for the driveway. I also lock up the gate at night. Believe it or not, I never did that earlier. With my earlier Holden Berlina / Calais, I have even unknowingly left the doors wide open all night a couple of times, and nothing’s happened. Maybe I was just lucky then. And, it was the factory unit...so the person who took it obviously knew what he was doing.
  5. Another Gen 1 owner here... 2006 Kluger Grande. 70,000km on it so far. Bought it second hand 4 months ago (ex-lease). I had always driven a Holden Commodore / Berlina / Calais before. Fuel consumption seems to be around 13-15L/100km, but the Holdens gave me 18-20 for the same sort of drives (stop-start traffic on the way to work). Haven't really taken it off-road so far.
  6. I am a relatively new owner of a Toyota Kluger, having purchased a second hand 2006 model Kluger Grande in October. Within a couple of weeks of buying it, it got broken into in our driveway at home and the GPS/Stereo unit was stolen. Seems to have been a professional job - the driver side lock was broken, the entire unit was removed, and the wiring neatly clipped. The rest of the car including stuff in the car was intact - not even a scratch near the lock or on the dash. And the fingerprinting crew from the police found nothing either. The surprising thing was that the alarm did not activate when the lock was broken. Since then, a few family members have suggested that I go to the likes of Strathfield and get an aftermarket security upgrade done on the car. My question is whether these upgrades are worthwhile - Do they really provide any additional security? If yes, what sort of security is recommended- Any particular brand / retailer, or is going to the local mechanic better? What features should I get? My Kluger has the standard factory installed security (alarm + immobiliser). What sort of costs are we looking at? I have had $ quoted between $350 and $2000. Would appreciate your feedback.
