I was just talking to a toyota wrecker and they said the C50 is one of the best 5 spd GB's made by toyota, and the life of it is dependent on the driver. Also they should do more than 350K KM's and the engine would be stuffed but the gearbox would be fine. I have only rang two wreckers and already they have multiple available with low K's, which may strengthen the argument that it is a strong and durable gearbox, as no one has required to purchase due to no failures and furthermore, the abundance of gearboxes held by the wrecker.

Hi All. I have had 2 quotes for the 5 speed + Rev gearbox to be rebuilt in my 1991 Toyota Corolla Hatch. One with GST is around 2300 AUD, while the other from at least 2 years ago is 1500 AUD, both including gst. Both are going to do a new clutch, flywheel machine, the old quote was going to replace 3 synchro cones while the current quote was going to replace all synchros Given the cost of living and the prevailing decline of the gearbox I would expect the later price to be greater now. Another quote came from installing a second hand gearbox, with 1295 AUD for the rebuilt gearbox (changeover) + installation fee 500, no clutch replace. What do I do, I don't feel the job is worth 2300 AUD, and I am confident the gearbox hasn't deteriorated too much in 2 years to warrant all synchros replaced as only contact is occurring on three gears, 1, 2 & 3 when clutching. Also the cheaper quote is around 30km to city rather the first is 5km, so I think there may be some correlation to premises rent and high prices maybe. I don't like the idea of a changeover gearbox as it's history can't be tracked, where as if the rebuilt gearbox fails, it's easier to isolate the source of failure THanks for your time DMC

I received mine the other day from the US. The engine, transmission, drive train and suspension are all fine, however the body is different and the lighting, but I have all the things I require. These manuals are very comprehensive, cost about 103.00AUD Came with a wiring manual too I am happy with it, thats the main thing

If you have mechanical aptitude try pick a part and a SR Manual. You pay a fee, take your tools and remove it yourself. http://www.pick-a-part.com.au/ If you are in melbourne try toyota spares in Moorabbin, they may have a second hand one. http://www.justoyota.com.au/ This may be the only cost effective way, I know someone with a similar problem and they tried pick a part with success. Have you tried third party suppliers like Supercheap, Repco or Bursons? They may have a generic one that does the same job, without the pice tag.

Hi All. My 1991 corolla is handling poorly and the shockers are to blame, plus the steering rack, but that is another story. I am going to refit them with my brother, but as I have never done this before, I was wondering if there are any special tools required to do this change over. I would source a SR manual, but the one I ordered from Ebay hasn't arrived yet and I searched the TOC forum for a similar topic but to no avail. My mate a while back replaced all four struts on his Camry which required a spring compressor, a special tool which held the spring in a shortened position until the exchange was complete. That was a much larger vehicle, however my Corolla hatch is much smaller in comparison. I know that a tension/torque wrench is an in valuable tool for this job, but unsure if the spring compressor is... Also I was wondering if a special tool was needed to hold the chromed shaft of the strut whilst tightening of nyloc nut on the top of the strut? I would think there would be, because if vise grips were used these would score the functional part of the shaft, which travels into the cylinder, destroying the strut cylinder seals in short succession. well we should keep each other informed. I was looking at a few Ebay sales over in the states, and I contacted the seller with a question. As this seller was like this top seller, ebay make it difficult for the prospective buyer to ask a question of that seller. Anyway I asked the question and I haven't received a reply and I don't think I will. I think ebay or gumtree may be a starting point

I was wondering where I could obtain a Genuine Workshop manual for my 1991 Toyota Corolla Hatch. I am not to sure of the Hayne's as I borrowed one from a friend and it lacked some details i required. Thank you
