  1. No worries dude, just check your stereo to be sure you have enough current at the lighter outlet - the lighter should be roughly 10A max & depending how much grunt your stereo has you may need a bit more than 10A. If its just a normal unit with a built in amp then probably will only want 5-7.5A so should be cool. I always like to remove the dodgy old wiring & start again unless its clean & well done - then you know what you have & hopefully don't have any nasty surprises down some remote track or whatever. General Grabbers sorry haven't owned any of those but sounds about right- I run 2 sets of rims with Cooper AT3's for everyday use & STMaxx's for proper offroad - not the cheapest but I've had good service from Coopers so am happy. Like you I'm not so keen on the flares look - I like anything up to 255's in width but the main thing is go for reasonably tall tyres so the footprint gets longer as well as wider. Your standard tyres on the cruiser were road grippers which are 810 diameter so that's a good starting point. Twin lockers.... !! nice one - the only thing I hear that might trip you up with those is to check the airlines & pump to make sure everything is working fine otherwise I think they're pretty good at getting you into messy situations - you may want that winch... :) with the intercooler I would say yep definitely do it if you can - you could probably get a bonnet scoop from the wreckers off a 76-79 series that would make it look pretty cool. I spoke to one bloke who said most fall into the trap on the 2H of going for too big a turbo - the point here was that as a non turbo motor it doesn't push enough air through to cope with the big turbo so it runs harder with a slightly smaller unit - he has a troopy & was pretty switched on - if you want his number let me know & i'll send you a PM so you can get in touch. I think the biggest thing there would be to make sure you have a decent size exhaust & inlet so it can breathe. I'm sure there are heaps of threads covering 2H's with turbo mods on 4WD Action, Lcool or 4x4 earth - just have a search & I reckon you'll get a flood of info. the winch - yep its pretty straight forward so a bit of patience & you should on the way. have a hunt around & you might find a parts & wiring diagram on the net without too much drama. Essentially its just a starter motor with Fwd & Rev poles & a set of switches. The main thing again with this is current - they draw a heap under load so any dodgy connections will affect that. Sounds like it will be a pretty good machine once you have it all sorted catchya G.
  2. Don't worry Lach - everybody has to be a newbie at some stage - nice car mate! From memory on that model about the only things that came on with the ACC were the radio, maybe the wipers & the cigarette socket. You should see a square black plastic box under the bonnet labelled "Power outlet" in there you will find a permanent +, ACC + & IGN + terminal & also an earth. If you run the stereo from there it will be easy to trace in future if you have any issues. Behind the dash there should be the original radio plug which was a two wire plastic plug or maybe some one has cut it off which would be fairly obvious - should be hanging just behind the ashtray. The rims will most likely need to be 16x7's to be legal without flares on the front. the offset is 0 but just double check that on 4x4 earth or Lcool & someone will confirm pretty quick. Warn high mounts are pretty good & plentiful as they are very common on tilt trays - just search on ebay & you will find one for spares or search Warn on ebay for the solenoids. sadly the most likely issue in your winch will probably be the motor as they done like being overloaded or used with water in the electric motor. you could get the motor rewound but check the price on that compared to a replacement working unit. either way its a project so if you have a bit of time & a workbench then its a pretty simple device once you look into it - change the grease / oil in the gearbox while you are there. Keep the cruiser serviced & you cant go wrong all the best G.
  3. Rod, don't despair man - many people have been confused by those what TheKlng said is true but they are totally serviceable so pull them down first & see whats wrong. Almost definitely from your description they will be full of crap & old grease has gone sticky. wash them out & put them back together the correct way & I'm sure they will be fine. there's plenty of how to vids on youtube - do a search for "Aisin Manual hub (freewheeling hub) rebuild Toyota Land Cruiser" & you should find something. The squeak you describe points to something else at play here.... Your uni joint shouldn't fail even if you only had one hub engaged. Are you sure your front diff has oil in it? It sounds like something else is causing the diff to bind up & you are thinking its the hubs at fault?? Might be good idea to have a good look in there & make sure everything is in the right way with correct oil etc Rgds G.
  4. Hi Ian, The 76 wagon bar will fit but the sides are shorter & they have a slightly different way of attachment. Your best bet would be to keep an eye on ebay or Gumtree for someone who is replacing the standard bar with a rear wheel carrier bar. I am pretty certain any troopy bar since 84' will fit your car - I don't think the rear bar has changed at all except lights or no lights variants. Have a look around at anybody who does the fitouts for mines or emergency services vehicles in WA - there will eb a stockpile somewhere. You could also put a post on one of the more 4x4 dedicated sites like 4WD Action, 4X4 Earth or the LCOOL for example. Rgds G.
  5. Hi Brett, From your description I would suspect current supply as you have highlighted. Try the battery as its the simplest thing to swap - then I would have look at the alternator & make sure it's putting out enough voltage consistently - you may need to take that to an auto electrician if you aren't sure what you are doing - they will check it under load which is hard to do at home. If it's been fried then it's a fair bet that something is not right in the wiring somewhere - chase out the second system & disconnect it to test if it makes a difference. There are relays & solenoids in that car to start & stop the engine but if it's working without additional loads then they are quite possibly just fine & I would come back to the alternator brushes etc. Working your way through all that you will be able to see if any contacts are loose etc & that might also highlight a potential problem. You could also try http://www.lcool.org & there are a heap of specific 4X4 forums if you do a quick search -on those you will likely get someone who knows 60's better. At this stage I'm guessing the alternator isn't keeping up under load - might be quite old....? the alternator on that model should have a vacuum pump on the back so be careful - they can be expensive!! Good luck - I'll be curious to see what it is Rgds Gary.
  6. Right - gotcha... & yep just pretty pictures I agree. sorry I don't have the brochure but I think your best solution will be to email the Sydney City Parts guys via the ebay store with a description of what you want. I've done that with a few parts & they have been excellent. I see they have a few other wiring kits on there at the moment so it might be a starting point. Is there not somewhere closer that sells 70 series cruisers? - given lots of military / nato etc have them I would think there must be somewhere in Europe? Maybe the US? Alternatively you could just make a wiring kit wit ha socket off ebay & some wire - that's what most Aussies do Rgds G.
  7. Hi Andrey, try this for the parts = http://www.toyota.com.au/landcruiser-70-series/accessories?WT.ac=Toyota_PASM_Accessories_HP_LC70 & this for the purchase = http://stores.ebay.com.au/SydneyCityParts - these guys I have no trouble recommending - they are really helpful & you can buy any Toyota part from them just like a dealer - your freight bill might be a little more than ours though.... & I don't know but you might find this of interest... = http://www.essi24.ru/catalog/auto/toyota/group/catalog/GR/code/781330/id/130998151.html other than that there are tons of aftermarket companies out there - just do a search etc Rgds G.
  8. Hi Peter, If you try to buy it from Toyota they will send it down the road & have an aftermarket one fitted is what I was told when I picked up my car - IE: they apparently do not have a genuine Toyota CC for this vehicle.... I have an Autron which was rather expensive but I have to say its excellent. I've had CC's on every car since 1990 & the older ones usually have a "lag" on hills. The Autron with the V8 has no lag & seriously it can keep a more accurate speed than I can - it doesn't waver at all. Sorry haven't owned a VDO unit but I believe they are ok. If you search a few of the other forums around you might find some info Rgds G.
  9. Hey Elise, Did you get any response to this? I too have a VDJ76 & it's coming up for its 10K service.... deciding where to go.... the 1K service was done where I purchased the car & let's just say it was close to a mining area - not entirely convinced they did anything & not entirely convinced they will do a decent job in future... the car NEW! Has two dents in the driver's side which I did not see until it was parked in my driveway with much better lighting - they couldn't even be bothered replying to my email so needless to say the idea of getting it serviced by them doesn't particularly appeal. FYI - I just had another smaller Toyota serviced yesterday at Waitara & while the office staff I have to say were clearly not on the ball it would seem?? they did go over the car as requested. I booked using the online service & they lost the booking.... the guy at service was ok but clearly having not the best Monday - that's ok because I can imagine he must get no end of complaints... the yard then called me just before 5 to say they "hadn't received my car for service.." I politely pointed out that their system obviously doesn't work because we had been there at 7:30 am & had the car serviced as requested.. I think a case of the left had doesn't talk to the right so what does that say about the mechanics workshop - don't know...? hopefully they are watching.. Don't want to void the warranty in any way & obviously Toyota should be the most logical place to service the vehicle but like you I would be keen to hear any other members who have positive suggestions? Have always serviced all my own vehicles in the past for this very reason so where to now?? This is my 6th Landcruiser having done more than 2 million K's in them so I'm used to servicing them but this one has new car warranty.... G.
