  1. The thing with the CAI, is that the name may be slightly more misleading then you think. I don't believe a really big difference in temperature would affect the engine that much. Its the decrease in restriction and the increase in velocity of the air that probably makes most of the difference, not to mentioned that maybe the optimum length has been developed to ensure that the intake allows the engine to produce the most amount of power possible.

Its like saying that if I HPC my whole exhaust system, followed by wrapping, it will produce more power then a 2.5" catback straight through exhaust.

All in all, the modified stock air box 'should' produce slightly better results, I wouldn't say its an alternative to a proper CAI. Its probably more of mod for people that are concerned about getting caught.

Kudos to Wayne for writing it up, cause I know most of us couldn't be bothered.

  2. Oval or hot-dog I think it will come down to your rear muffler. But for noise suppression then an oval one should be better.

I recently got my cat-back re-done as the resonator was leaking, the previous place actually put a baffled resonator in there which may have robbed me of some power (2kw lol). So I got the new workshop to install two straight through resonators (aka hotdogs) an 18" one followed by a 12" one, only problem was that I put my stock muffler back on. Will try for a offset/centre straight through muffler in the coming weeks hopefully and see how we go for noise.

  3. Dunno how I would help int this debate. But this is what happened.

When I got my new shocks I used king lows front and back, but the height thing was really bugging me. The handling improved over stock but it felt as if the front was getting alot of the weight shifted to it, I then later installed a set of sportivo accessory springs from toyota (20mm drop) at the front only and that made everything sit more flat then before. The change in handling was considerable, the car was considerably more stable around corners. I'm pretty sure that the spring rate between the two springs were pretty much the same if not similiar.

  4. I believe the EPA most likely will not care as long as you are under the db limit during testing, even with the valve fully opened.

But I believe the RTA has stated that you are not allowed to have a device that allows the manipulation of noise, i.e varex muffler. Google for VAREX and RTA and I'm sure you will find it somewhere. But I'm planning to get a VAREX muffler soon, bah if they really wanted to defect me I would be gone pretty quickly. lol

  5. Well as kolourhero has mentioned, If Koni make them for your car then go for it. You will be really impressed with them, if you can team them up with Eibach springs cause they apparantly work better. I'm happy with my setup at the moment though.

  6. Coilovers will be stiff, and for what purpose??

A good spring and shock combination will be great for the street. I've tried all three combinations

    Springs + Stock Shocks

    Stock Suspension

    Coilovers

    Springs and Aftermarket shocks

Thats how I would rate them, I don't believe coilovers are necessary unless you plan to track your car.

  7. You gotta pay to play I suppose

When I bought my car it came equipped with king spring lows, I hated the handling. So I changed back to stock and like it better. But now I'm running king lows and Koni FSD's which I believe are perfect for the street. I also have a set of tein super wagons, which I think are a little too firm.

  8. Definitely stiffer, I suppose your handling is better.........but I from my own point of view, I wouldn't use lowered springs with stock shocks. I don't like the ride quality of lowered springs with stock shocks, definitely need aftermarket shocks with it to be better.

  9. What model corolla do you have?? Cause in NSW I think, not sure about the other states, the engine must be the same year or newer so that it can comply with emissions or something along those lines.

I've known a 3sgte put into an AE82 corolla, that was scary. It was bumping out 160-170kw and the ae82 corollas weight like nothing. Needless to say he got a bit too excited and lost his license for three months.

  10. To reset your ECU, simply disconnect the -ve connection to your battery and leave it there for 30mins before reconnecting.

I'm not sure, but I remember someone posting that if you pump your brake pedal after disconnection, you get rid of the 30min waiting period.

I have only had Toyo T1R's and they made a noticeble difference with regards to grip, I even felt the car was able to slow down quicker during braking in everyday driving. Recently checked them, and the only drawback is that they seem to wear out quicker, which is expected.

  11. I'd really hate to say this, but I was curious with the performance of your car so I did some searching on the internet

Unfortunately an automatic 2zzge and with the even heavier corolla chasis, will at best allow you a 0-100 in approximately...8.5s or more....so that plus your slippery tyres will put you into the 9s bracket.

If your runx was a manual and returning those times, then there would be need for concern...

The problem is that the gear ratio of the automatic tranny is not designed to take advantage of the narrow power band of the 2zzge, even the manual transmission gear ratios are not good with theoretical impossibility of landing in lift from 1st gear to 2nd gear.

  12. This is getting outta hand, and seriously, I'll say it once again...

Since when was modifying cars a good idea....with the money I spent on my car, I could've sold the bloody sportivo and picked up an evo or sti. Definitely faster all around, but hey I bought it as a daily driver. Insurance and economy was what I was looking for, lol. Also something a bit different, to catch some people off guard.

This debate can keep on going and going, but really what are we arguing about here? I say enjoy your car and if people are asking for advice, no dissing should be involved, keep it to yourself preferably.

  13. Season's greetings pplz. I hope everyone is well. I am considering replacing my stock Sportivo (Allex here) exhaust with an aftermarket one. However, I have ran against other 2zz's with sports exhausts and they were no faster. In fact, mine seemed seemed slightly faster and some of them had management.

Guys have been telling me not to do anything with the car as it is performing very well as it is. I believe that a free flowing exhaust would improve my performance somewhat but I have been mostly told to just leave it as it is.

    What do you guys think?

What type of management system have they got?? If its a piggyback (unless emanage ultimate + v manage) it could of been why they are possibly slower with those mods.

Before getting an exhaust, you should get a CAI first...

  14. When I came around to understanding the term rice....it was.....

If it made your car look fast and you couldn't back it up with some performance that was a rice, and usually you associate that term with riceboys.....

It was offensive back then though to call someone a riceboy, dunno how people take it today though....

My corolla is feeling slower with the hot weather, gonna have to chat to you soon Bill. :D
