We bought one last November which had a rattle which sounded like an exhaust pipe or similar hitting against somethimg whenever you accelerated from a standing start, OK while travelling. this was on a pre sale test drive. On arrival back at the dealership it was bought to the attention of a nearby mechanic who diagnosed it immediately as a timing belt tensioner problem which would take about 30 minutes to fix. Bought the car on the proviso the problem would be fixed prior to taking delivery. The problem was fixed and has never been back and we couldn't be happier with the car..
  2. Agreed, you are now at the point of no return, it's off to the dealer..Will cost around $40 and 30 minutes to do, the radio HAS to come out so they can reset it...
  3. I doubt whether you will be able to get one here or OS that will work. I got a unit from the US for my 2001 Camry but have never been able get it to work as theirs is different to ours..So much for standards as in OBDII etc.
  4. And if that doesn't work take it to Toyota and they will reset it to default for $40... Had to do it for my Corolla, 2nd Hand and none of the usual suspects worked and ran out of attempts(10 max). Try the VIN though.
  5. I bought an Equus 3100 from Auto Barn in the US but have never been able to get it to work(on 2000 Camry V6 or 2005 Corolla)... Pinouts etc are different to the US ones and even trying different pinout configs , still no joy... I have found nothing available in Australia that will work.. wait and see if anyone else has had any success, but I suspect it will be a long one... Someone told me it will work on BA Falcons but haven't found anyone I know to try it out...yet.
  6. Worst case, you'll burn out the contacts and then have replace a possibly very expensive indicator stalk...Best thing is to try and modify the way you use them... ;) ;)
  7. Sounds like the contacts are arcing. Sometimes get it on indicator stalks if you aren't positive in your operation, such as using the lane changing mode(non locking)...or similar
  8. There is no drain plug for the diff in that model, though some may have. I have one(Camry 2001 V6) and this is how I did it. Drain fluid via tranny sump plug. Add new fluid to tranny via dipstick pipe, takes around 4 litres. Drive vehicle for around 10-20k. Redrain tranny and discard fluid(responsibly).Remove tranny pan to access strainer and clean(it is reusable) and reinstall. Replace gasket with a new one and replace pan. Fill with new fluid and you're done.. This procedure was recommended to me by an auto tranny specialist...Have had no problems whatsoever in over 40000k... Funny thing though, I have a Toyota Factory Repair Manual and it mentions the diff drain plug but as I said this model generally does not have one. Mind you the manaul covers from 1997 on..Things change.. Edit: the above actually refers to A140E Automatic transaxle(unleaded engine)...
  9. Got 17" alloys and low profile tyres on my Camry and they're at 40PSI, as recommended by tyre retailer who fiited them 5 years ago.

    Stylish: I reckon if it was a wheel alignment problem that was causing a burnt rubber smell, you should be able to see the smoke coming off the tyres... Keisari: As for rubber supporting exhaust pipes, suggest you get under your car and check it out.

    Get same thing on my 2001 V6 Camry, sometimes. Best I have been able to come up with is that one or more of the rubbers supporting the exhaust sytem get a little hot. I have looked and lookedbut have not been able to find any sign of possible damage anywhere. Only happens only on occassions, mostly hot dry days..Sorry I can't be of more help. Have had my Camry for 7 years now, so I guess it can't be very bad or something would have shown up by now.
  13. I use Nulon Long Life but be warned it is GREEN and MUST NOT be mixed with RED coolant. Give the cooling system a good flush to get rid of any old coolant. tip in the Nulon and add water, read instructions/ service manual re mix ratio Usually around 60% coolant to 40% DISTILLED/DEMINERALISED water.. Good for 4 years. Just replaced mine and on second lot, never had a problem.... Also go through the normal bleeding, get rid of any air etc.. and you're done. Or you could stay with the Toyota LL it's very good.
  14. Only option is to take it to a Toyota dealer and have them reset it.. Had same problem with my Corolla after a flat battery. Car was bought secondhand and I had no idea what the code was, only gives you 10 tries and the locks you out totally. Cost me $45 to have them do it..
  15. Got a 2005 Coralla last August insured it for $15600 and renewal for the next year is, still $15600...Agreed value...

My Camry and Corolla both have rain sensors, they're called "eyes" and when they see little wet spots on my windscreen they tell me it's raining and I should think about turnining on my windscreen wipers. Sorry, I just couldn't resist that. Do you really need a rain sensor?? There are many insurance companies which have windscreen replacement cover, generally free of excess and at the rate of one a year(maybe 2), comprehensive cover only and highest no claim bonus.

  19. Not a problem. I've tried all of them except the replacement, mainly because all of the others worked, including the bent(slightly) antenna...Don't have problems now..
  20. Some things to try: Wipe some Vaseline on the antenna, don't overdo it. Check for bends or kinks. These can sometimes, if they aren't too big. Stroking the antenna and apply slight pressure in the opposite direction can do wonders, also works for bent shafts on golf clubs. Manual assistance while the antenna extends and retracts can correct the problme if the drive section has skipped some notches. Complete replacement of the antenna is not always necessay. The extandable section can be purchased and replaced fairly easily.

I did realise there maybe differences in model years and should have mentioned it but my drift was for the poster to have a look at the car and read some manuals, users or otherwise..It's amazing what you can find...Still find $600 a bit steep but it is so long since I have had a dealer service done I guess I had lost touch a bit.. Thanks for the heads up anyway...
  22. Juat a small addition to my previuos post. In reference to the transmission fluid change you will find a tag on the transmission dipstick re the non changing of the fluid...
  23. I have a 2005 Corolla Hatch(auto), still on new car warranty till Nov. this year but I am and will be doing all my own servicing. Some things to consider: 1.Toyota recommend not changing trtansmission fluid ever, unless used under very extreme conditions. 2.Timing chain, so no need to change a belt. 3.There is a label on the underside of the bonnet stating that the car was factory filled with long life coolant and replacement not due till 160000K(100000Miles). Doesn,t leave much to do other than regular oil and filter changes, check brake pads, tyres, the sort of things you do on a regular basis anyway. The only other thing I did was replace the existing standard plugs with NGK iridiums at 50000K. I can't anything like $600 worth there...Get yourself a Haynes Repair Manual for around $35-40 Has all you need for DIY maintenance. Available from most auto shops such Auto One, Repco etc. My penny's worth..
  24. Try rotating the dipstick to different positions, same happens with my Camry and Corolla..
