  1. already run the car on 98 pulp BUT due to the dodgy vacumm hose set up i would like to compare mine to another. Have a manual on order and should have it in a week or so . and regardless of the fuel it seems weird i cant get the base timing to NOT ping .
  2. i have a non presurized hydrogen producing cell on the car that increases power and fuel economy greatly. is a system under review by UniNSW for exact results but on an EFI outback the mileage went from 25 MPG to over 41MPG . on my old 4Y corona with a blown head gasket( never fixed it but disconnecting number 2 or 3 cyc lead made no difference) i went from 14l per 100 down to 9l per 100kms. the unit pulls 10-15 amps from alternator ad uses about 2L of demineralised water per 6 month. will upload a picture when i have net ( this is through mobile phone wifi pic upload would be suicide)
  3. ok i have for the time sorted the 4Y out so it advances nicely and runs ok. Is a different car now its timed right :) Now to look forward and start planning my engine swap. I have to date owned alot cars ,mainly VL commodores as the RB nissan engines are all easy to swap in and i have done most of them myself inc turbo builds. Custom mounts and bellhousings are items i can make myself easy enough so im not limited by the normal bounds. Wiring im good enough at but really who enjoys wiring a car up ??? only the truely disturbed. ;) Due to the Hydrogen cell mod on my hilux i would like to keep carby power as modding the h20 system for EFI is a expense/ head stuff im not up for yet. :( i have been leaning towards a v8 holden BUT at the wreckers i saw a 2F motor. Now the wreckers say this wont fit . I have seen and driven a 2J (2.5L twin turbo) powered hilux and it fit pretty easily so i put it down to the guy trying to sell me a V6 VN motor swap package( i hate them ) and i found the parts direct from supplier about 1k cheaper than he quoted supply only.( i understand a mark up but 1k on a 2.5k package NOO) My requirements are simple. Petrol, Carby, Reliable . The car will see mild offroading, nothing extreme, tow duties for a track car around Aust, some daily duties, camping. All ideas welcome so dont be shy to reply. cheers
  4. ok i have a 4y powered hilux 4x4 ( conversion in future plans as i an underwhelmed by the power of this mighty motor :P ) however im having pinging issues and i have found the issue but an unsure how to fix it . the vaccum lines on the carby are looped together and the 2 vac ports on dizzy (1 for advance) are also looped. really dont want to pop this engine yet so any help much appreciated . havent had any luck getting a workshop manual yet in CQ area. cheers
  5. ok so im new here and new to 4Y motors. (last one was a corona engine that cracked a head and block and lived a ok life) 1987 dual cab hilux with 4Y motor and 4x4 . But im having timing/pinging issues. threw a timing light on it and at idle its at 2* and a slight rev sees it advance to 20 odd. the main issue im having is the pinging when over 80 and either hitting a harsh head wind or a incline. the 4y is no power house but chuffs along fine at 3k rpm at 100. the dizzy has 2 vac ports on it that are looped together however. ( will post pics later once phone and laptop agree again) Im just confused at where to start so hoping someone has a fair idea. 2nd part of my question is what do people recommend as a motor swap for the hilux. have seen the kits avail for a 253/308 engine swap( bellhousing modded , mounts etc ). Im biased in keeeping it petrol as i know petrol engines and dropping a holden into it suits my style ( have a nissan RB powered late model holden drift car underway ) my dads had a few 22r corona's and found the EFI to be an issue but loves the carby version so i may consider that road yet, depending on what advice is around. Car will more so be a run around tow car with occasional weekend expeditions into the wild so a tuned 253 would probably suit my needs best but im open to most ideas. Cheers in advance,
  6. Hi there all , just moved to CQ coast and swapped my vl turbo calais for a hilux 4x4 dually before i left as calais wasnt going to do what i wanted up here. upsides - 4x4 , lift kit, tray area, canopy , few scratches and big ***** spotty's and bullbar :P ( rear ones too ) downsides - its petrol and ........ ummmm ....... a 4Y :( oh and has standard hilux rust but im a painter so thats an easy win. Basically going to upgrade engine and sort the body issues out asap. 4y runs nice avearaged 14l per 100 on way form adelaide to Rockhampton with 800kgs of tools and house stuff in it . Towed my cars around adelaide before i left all sweet. cant wait to get it into Stony creek area here in CQ . catch you all around. ( going to post in help section for car issues lol) jono
