Haha, I just realised the O.P's car is a 2007. I wonder if the 50 series uses the same clip arrangement. I'm afraid to pop mine out in case I break something and not being able to put it back without a replacement clip.

I'll contact Toyota tomorrow and find out.

I had to get new clips for the 2016 RAV4 i put a dashcam in also, if its anything like that then those weren't too bad to replace, and there was two clips (one top, one bottom) holding the cover on instead of one. About $10 each from memory from the dealer.

Good outcome Jack. Fancy the bolt being loose on the dog bone. They are usually tightened to spec from factory and that's quite tight. For it to come loose is strange.

I agree with the you-tube thing too mate. It's always a great learning tool for us and in general watching those you mentioned rebuild cars that otherwise should've been binned.

One in particular was by a you tuber called DIY Gang. He fully rebuilt a Dodge Hellcat that was burned to a crisp. The car was toast, with the roof caved in etc. We all though he was mad, but he pulled it off ! Talk about hard work, OMG !

    Watch this:

Have gotten into the habit of using a paint marker to mark bolts when i torque them, i find that makes it easy to see at a glance whether a bolt has backed itself out

Haha, I'm the same unless I am watching an excellent TV series, usually a HBO or Netflix original..

Jack, good to hear you didn't find anything significant. Your time wasn't wasted mate. It's better to get in there and poke around, familiarise yourself with the inner workings of your car and making sure it's safe. Best way to learn. I'm sure that as my car ages, it will require more wrenching by me, which will inevitably give me more learning experiences. Thank God for you tube.

Looks like the loose dog bone mount may have been the culprit. I'll have to check mine too. Things can get loose over time and the occasional once over with a socket set is advisable.

I am yet to know if they are in fact fluid filled. Part of me thinks they are, but I'll try and find out.

House of Cards is excellent. Chernobyl, The Pacific, Band of Brothers.... among the best TV series out there

I messaged Partsouq.com about a replacement fuel filter for the Aurion and this was their response. Why is it so difficult ??

It just gets hilarious by the minute.

    Hello Tony

Thank you for getting back on us.
As per VIN provided, there is no fuel filter shown in any related diagram,
It could be that the filter is not replaceable or cannot be sold separately.

I had a look at the 50 series parts catalogue the other day, i didn't see the fuel filter listed as a standalone component like it is on the 40 series. Possibly it is only supplied as part of a larger assembly which might be why its so expensive from Toyota. Not sure. I am not familiar enough with the 40 vs 50 fuel system differences 🙂

I'm just wondering if what they sell are in fact Toyota Genuine Parts as opposed to "genuine" counterfeits. The counterfeit market is prolific these days. They will make an exact replica of the the item AND the box complete with the official hologram stickers to make it appear Genuine.

Have you checked the pricing from a dealer before purchasing from Partsouq ?

I can't imagine you being able to purchase from an 3rd party seller who underquote the dealer pricing.

I checked and all they have for the 50 series is a transmission filter, nothing else.

Toyota want $226 for a fuel filter for the 50 series. Would you pay that or $80 for the equivalent in a Ryco ??

There's nothing wrong with Ryco. They are as good as Toyota at half the price.

I wish I could pay $60 for a Genuine filter. I'd buy more than one.

Yes, I've ordered multiple parts off them. No problems with any of them. And actually the front strut mounts I ordered from them had Toyota Australia stock movement labels on them. The fuel filter i got from them has been in my car I think since beginning of this year, still performing flawlessly. Dealers just whack massive mark ups on everything

I think the plastic ones are ok provided you don't make the same mistake I made by over tightening it. Hand tight should see it last well in to the foreseeable future.

    Is your RAV 4 a V6 ?

Hopefully its not overtorqued. Its only ever been serviced at the dealer since it was new

Its the 2.0L 4 cyl CVT. No V6 was offered on the RAV4 after the 2011 model year as far as I know (in the USA)

Have some fun reading this thread. Plenty of posts about using breaker bars, links for removal tools and the housing being overtightened at the dealership.

Persevere and you will be rewarded with some detailed photos of a damaged plastic housing.

This is as far as I read in the thread.

I had a look under our 2016 RAV4. Yep, it has the plastic housing lol. Why oh why....

Just had its last free service too.

Do you recall how much you paid ? If it's reasonable enough, I'd get a fresh set and keep them until such time they are needed for a refresh.

They're about $950 AUD each. Also I'm not sure if they'll sell any TRD parts without a TRD VIN provided. I could be wrong though

That thread was partly hilarious. Those boys don't play nice 😁😁

So basically Dot 3 and Dot 4 are the same except the DOT 4 has a higher boiling point. (big deal, I don't race or abuse my cars either). So I can probably say that DOT4 can be used as the two will mix albeit after I do a flush it will all be pretty much DOT 4 in there anyway.

It also stated that the DOT 3 and DOT 4 are made up of the same substances so I don't think the seals will be affected. just not sure which is more hygroscopic, which also begs the question how often to flush the fluid to reduce the long term effects of moisture ingress. I would think annually would be easy to achieve rather than the typical 2 years for what it's worth hey Ash ?

I might just go ahead and use the DOT 4. I have 10 Brembo DOT 4 x 500ml bottles

    s-l500.jpg

I was also hesitant about putting DOT4 in my car, but the manual calls for the brake fluid to meet SAE Standard J1703, which Castrol DOT4 does (the one i used). My rotors are due for replacement too (below spec) so going to put DBA rotors and Brembo pads in.

I shudder the thought of ever having my car serviced at a dealer or others. They always seem to scratch, chip. mar or wreck something. My work vehicle is a prime case. I look after it like it's my own but the service guys treat them like crap, because they it's a "Company Car"... I had to have a crack at the service guy one time for grazing the centre hub caps when removing the wheels. He puts the nuts in the huib cap and slides them under the car.. Nice one. Now they're all sporting graze marks. Now they know how to treat my car because I'll be after them lol..

Too many idiots in this world.

Also the knuckleheads at the tyre centre, never use those protective nylon sockets and always scratch the wheel nut wells. Drives me crazy ! Then they over torque the wheels nuts to buggery and I have to pop a vein in my head when I have to remove a wheel.

Why can't people just do a proper job.

I remove my centre caps before the car goes in for anything. For this reason. And remove my wheels at home if its just needing new tyres.

  11. That thing must be on there seriously tight!!

If you have an impact gun... That would probably break it loose pretty easily. With the cap wrench on the end. Or a really long breaker bar.

Someone way over torqued my drain plug at some point and fixed it with a helicoil. And it all came out in pieces when I went to put the plug back in. So, I replaced the entire sump pan. Wasn't fun....
