  1. At the back of the motor between the 3rd and 4th cylinder with the vacuum lines coming out of it.
  2. Just had a look, everything appears to be the same, except the first image. The device pictured, any idea what it is? I haven't got it.
  3. Cheers for that. I'll have a look at the pics shortly. Mine is also setup for LPG too, but is manual. I do have a copy of the Gregory's service manual for it, but it doesn't have the diagram in it. I do have the original bonnet sticker diagram and one I found online too, but they are not very descriptive of what goes where on the carby itself.
  4. bluemountains: Since you have the same motor as me, is there any chance you could do me a favour? I'm just wondering if you could take some detailed photos of the vacuum hose layout in your motor and post/pm to me, because I'm having a little trouble following the diagram, especially the ones on the side of the carby between the motor and the carby. If you could, that would be awesome.
  5. Either motor should work. The Gregory's service manual covers both motors and others for all yn/rn/vzn hiluxes from 79 - 91. Just make sure the mouths are the same. The easiest option however would be to remain with the 18r as you wouldn't have to worry about wiring harnesses matching up then.
  6. I have also fallen victim to the same problem whilst trying to find shoes for my rear drums. I also have a yn58r with the 4y-c, but mins a month younger at 10/87. On the 3rd attempt at buying shoes, I took the old ones into super cheap and looked though the Catelog for one that matches. Turns out that the shoes for the yn58 are from the previous yn57, just like your front discs. Was an annoying experience, having to wait for them to be freighted in each time.
  7. Start by making sure your valve timing is correct, then check that the distributor is aligned on the correct teeth. Valve timing: Find TDC on the compression stroke in cylinder 1; this can be done by removing the rocker cover, remove spark plug from front cylinder, turn crankshaft clockwise until air is pushed out of the spark plug hole, then continue turning until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is at 0 degrees. At this point, on the rear most cylinder, one valve should be all the way up and the other just starting to move down. If that is correct, then your valve timing is correct. If you have any problems here, post back for further instruction. Whilst still at top dead centre, check distributor as follows: Ensure the rotor is aligned at approximately the same location as the no 1 point on the dizzy cap, if not, remove dizzy and reinsert one tooth at a time in the relevant direction. If you can't compleatly reinsert the dizzy there may be a key at the bottom of the hole where the distributor sits, use a flat head screw driver to adjust accordingly. Once the rotor is pointing in the right direction, screw the dizzy cap back down onto the dizzy. On the side of the dizzy is a 12 mm bolt , leave that loose (but tight at the same time). Next, check that the vacuume advance diaphragm is serviceable by blowing and sucking through the vacuum hose attached to it. If you can freely blow or suck through it, the diaphragm is buggered, and should be replaced (it's much easyier to replace the whole dizzy). Once all this is done, try to start the motor, you may need to hold the gas open slightly to get it to run. When it runs, attach a timing light and check timing. The timing can be adjusted by slightly turning the dizzy. Once the timing is correct ( should be about 4 degrees), tighten the 12 mm bolt on the side of the dizzy. Check and adjust the idle speed and mixture screws on the carby as needed to obtain the correct isle speed ( should be about 850 rpm ) Your motor should now be running normally, if it's not, then the next thing to check would be fuel delivery. This relates to the condition of the carby. Hope all that helps. If you have any problems, please feel free to ask me. Let us know how you go with that, then go from there. I had the same issues with my 87 Hilux yn58 with the 4y-c motor, and this is what worked for me.
  8. Hi all. I am having some trouble trying to correctly sort out the vacuum hoses in my Hilux. Now, i have managed to source a diagram for it (attached), but I haven't been able to follow it very well. For example, according to the diagram, there are about 5 different vacuum lines that go into the side of the carby, but the diagram is not very descriptive of which one is which (refer to photo - attached). As for the rest of the system, it would appear that I am missing the "EGR" part of the setup, will this matter much? I was wondering if anyone could post some photos of their vacuum system on their motor so that I can get a better idea of what goes where and sort this system out properly. Thanks in advance for any help.
