We had a 2010 ZR6 Aurion and from memory experienced the dreaded Steering Rack Knock, Toyota installed 3 new racks in a quest to eliminate it, New rack followed by a 4 wheel alignment by a reputable front end workshop, 3 times over a period of 18 months Apparently its got something to do with the bush in the passenger side of the rack.

What I did was have the wife rock the steering wheel back and forth sharply while I reached up under the passenger side and pulled down on the inner tie rod coming out of the steering rack and guess what, noise gone, so I knew it was only the bush not a nice tight snug fit on the inner tie rod ( rack ), got techo from Toyota to do as I did to feel the knock and how putting weight on it stops the noise , but they insisted a new rack was needed

Gave up chasing it through Toyota as all would do was throw another steering rack in it, must of cost them a fortune, especially genuine

So how was it fixed ?

Get the front end high enough so the wheels are off the ground, probably good idea to take the driver's side wheel off so you can get easier access to the steering shaft. ( Use axle stands before going under the vehicle).

Slide in and reach for the knuckle section and grab the shaft either side of the knuckle and try to twist them in an opposing direction. With no load on the steering assembly, you should be able to determine if there's any free play in that uni joint (knuckle).

If it checks out, then there's probably something going on within the rack or tie rod end.

CV joint also comes to mind too. Have you had those checked ?

There's no room up there to hold those uni joints as you suggested you can barley get to the nut. If it was the CV joint then there would be a vibration or clacking around the corners etc.

Think I will just take it to the mechanic's to suss properly.

Did you check the steering shaft knuckle for play ?

It could also be suspension related too. Lower control arm bushes or quite possibly your front strut/strut mount.

Did you inspect the front end with the car up or wheels off ?

Yeah was up on ramps noise was roughly located near the steering shaft nothing around the suspension area.

Stearing has no slack in it from what I can see what's the best way to check for loose knuckle's in the steering shaft.

Does it have to be centered ? I don't think you could even if you wanted to due to the tapered boot garnish. Doesn't the Camry also have the boot opener there too ?

What's the field of view from the factory camera like ? I didn't think this would matter much.

Well the current factory cam is off centre only square view and no guide lines back then the sole purpose was not to drive over your kids in your driveway.

The new cam is wide angle with guide lines and should fit under the garnish under the badge would also give me the option to delete the factory cam and replace the boot garnish for one with no factory can and have a chrome boot garnish.

  5. Ok another issue I was looking into the boot after being to the car wash with this new car and was placing the car jack tools into the proper places and my hand was wet from touching part of the car chassy and then I noticed The Lake under the spare wheel is this a common issue and were could it be leaking from the seals seem ok found no water there it might be coming from behind the plastic scuff panel.

  6. Ok have been noticing a knock that appears to be in the steering it's noticed when you take off or brake only slightly but when stationary and you turn your sterring left and right just hard enough you can make it knock.

Now the steering it's self is ok no slack no drifting left or right and the rack is not leaking.

What should I be looking at ?

I have spotted this... I know you don't need the references to swapping out the steering wheel but there is relevant information regarding your issue in here.

    https://www.toyotanation.com/threads/i-added-paddle-shifters-to-my-2015-toyota-camry-xle-v6-and-it-worked-heres-a-guide-on-how-to-do-it.1664644/

As described in this above post, have you tried to change gears via the new paddles with the shift lever in sport mode ?

Yes I put it into sport mode the shifter don't work have also tried the other method still nothing it's clearly a software issue were it might need to be enabled to work on some cars. I am woundering if the transmission module needs to be swapped out from the same car which was an RZ. Toyota used the same transmission on all camry's that's what I am being told by a Dealership technician he also thinks it must be to do with the software or replacing the trans module.

I doubt that any dealership would be involved in your modification. You possibly would pay for a service advisor to say to you "we don't do that modification"  Have you searched through all the postings to find the same modification ? You mention you know of others having done this have you questioned them ?

It has been done I googled searched before I went ahead one mentioned there dealership added the software for it but not mentioned how much they paid.

  9. Hi Guys,

I recently found out I could add sports paddle shifters in my late 2015 Camry atise the plug is there and all the wiring from factory so I brought another wheel from a atara RZ swapped the controls as I was also after the voice command button which now works but the paddle shifters are not working even thou some people have there's working somehow. Would I need to take it to a Toyota dealership to enable the use of the paddle shifters ? I have called a few but as usual with dealerships they want you to book the car in.

  10. I am just wanting to know is it possible to swap my center dash console from a 2015/2016 backwards to a 2014/2015 camry and would the the same wiring connections be the same in these model years.

Why am I asking well trying to see if I can get a Tesla style android headunit installed.
