    AC idle-up

Quick question: how much does your AC idle-up increase your idle speed? As in, what RPM does your engine jump up to when you switch on the AC at idle? Asking because mine ups it by around 200 RPM, which seems a little low.
  2. If it's a CV joint that's wearing out it would make a regular click, click, click sound when you're turning rather than just a knock. Personally, for a part like that which experiences a lot of stress, I wouldn't get a pre-worn one from a wrecker.
  3. Does sound like that hey. Just wondering about the EGR because he mentioned that "coming alive" at around 2800 RPM, which is inside the rev range that the EGR is switching between a few of its different modes according to the service manual. My car's predictably rough, even jerky, at around that range but smooth at other engine speeds, so I thought maybe it was related. Doesn't look like he's still checking here though. Thanks for the reply!
  4. So I've discovered oil in one of the spark plug tubes... probably can't be helping. I'll try to get my hands on a torque wrench and replace the gaskets, then put in a new set of plugs and leads. Will update. I don't want to sound like one of those noobs who just say "My mechanic says..." all the time, but... my mechanic put some kind of stuff through the engine that was supposed to remove carbon deposits at last service. For argument's sake, and because removing the head is well outside my skill level, what would you check next?
  5. Near Lewisham, not far west at all. Thanks for the invite, had my sister's wedding last weekend tho.
  6. Thanks for the tips! I'm in the inner west. Not the most car-friendly of places, but I do what I can!
  7. How would I remedy that? Is there a way to remove the deposits easily, our would it be necessary to retard the timing to compensate?
  8. I've been trying to find out why my Celica's engine is still pinging. It's currently set at 9 degrees BTDC (less than spec) and I run it on 98 octane fuel, so the obvious solutions are ruled out. It pings under moderate to high acceleration, usually under 4k RPM, up hills or flat. EDIT: It also hesitates at around 3k RPM. Maintain a constant 3k RPM and it's a bit jerky. Not sure if that's related. My mechanic and I have been chasing this for around a year now. It's making me wonder whether what I think is pinging is actually something else...? Pretty sure not though. So, anyone got ideas on what to check out? Currently on my list of things to check are: 1. ignition leads 2. EGR system 3. coil 4. oxygen sensor 5. knock sensor 6. replace distributor Anything I've missed?
  9. I've always liked the third generation Celica with the 22R-E engine. I learned to drive in a Corona with a 22R-E engine, gave me a strong appreciation of torquey fuel-injected engines in rear drive cars :) Aside from that, I reckon if you put the rear end of the sixth gen on the front end of the fifth gen, you'd have the ideal Celica looks-wise.
  10. Hey, Sorry to necropost, but your problem with pinging under any acceleration sounds very similar to what I'm seeing in my ST204 (also FS-FE engine). I'm trying to follow the service manual instructions for the EGR system, but I've got a couple of questions for you (if you can remember): 1. What state was your EGR filter in? Mine's kinda crusty, far more than I expected. How did you clean yours? 2. Did you take the EGR valve off, or is there a way to work it (to remove carbon deposits) without doing so? If you took it off, did you have to get a new gasket? Would appreciate any info you can give me!
  11. Hi all! Just thought I'd join up and say hi. Been reading the forum for a while and getting some good info, so thanks! I have an ST204 Celica SX-R. No major upgrade plans, but still plenty to do. It was in a bit of a state when I bought it, but it's been improving every service since then. Still a few niggling issues I can't quite figure out, but maybe you guys can help me with those! Anyway, hi, thanks, and see you round.
