  1. Resurrecting an old thread - for my old Hilux :-) Need a pic of the fusebox or a wiring diagram and the link to the .pdf mentioned above in 2008 doesn't work anymore. My 1988 twin cab2 wheel drive diesel ute was a gift and is used as a paddock basher on rural property. The odometer stopped working at 450,000 km and it has done plenty more since. It has been extensively fiddled with and patched up, only the bare bones are intact, the radio and wipers are about all that's usable.. Problem is the fuel gauge is not working. I'm thinking it might just be the fuse. Most of the fuses are missing and the fusebox cover once had printing showing which fuses was which but the printing has become unreadable. Anybody have a wiring diagram, or better a pic of the fusebox cover? ? It's an Oz vehicle if that's any help. TIA
  2. I was given my diesel Hilux for nix and have got it running well with a new timing belt and a change of oil and fluids. It's main use is for carting firewood and road/track fill around on a rural property. The other thing I have been using it for is dragging old tree stumps into position so I can either burn them or chop 'em up into firewood. To do this I attach a chain to the tow bar/ hitch, then point and shoot and hope the stump will follow along for a few metres, then repeat until it has been moved along sufficiently. Because it is 2 WD there's not enough traction to do much dragging but the weight/kinetic energy seems to do the trick. My question is how tough is the chassis on this old girl ? So far such treatment hasn't seemed to cause it much grief - is it going to break in half ? /
  3. Thanks for the advice Manxman. I'll keep a watch out for some wider tyres but the more I think about it I'm probably wiser to try and fix the boggy tracks. There's a big pile of old bricks from a previous owner which may be OK to make a "road" through the mud.
  4. My 1988 Twin Cab 2WD diesel ute is being used purely as a mule on a rural property, carting firewood, rocks and mowers/slashers/tools around. Problem is it's been raining more than usual last few months and there's several dirt tracks with boggy patches which I can't get through - got bogged to the axles once, and that was with no load aboard. The present tyres are "winter" pattern road tyres, and 3/4 worn. So I'm thinking of putting tractor tyres on the back BUT when I got bogged the front wheels also sunk deep into the mud. Seems there's a lot more weight on the front than the rear when there's no load. Perhaps I'd be better getting a 4WD ? ? Anybody have success using heavy duty tyres to improve traction on their 2WD
