  1. That's what I was fearful of even the dealer said to keep the revs up while spraying, if they drop too low you can hydrolock the engine. I've also read online that it can make its way into the engine oil which is why they advise to do it before an oil change. Oh well been using nulon diesel injector cleaner fuel additive every second tank for the last month haven't really noticed a difference no smoke like the upper engine cleaner that's for sure! One question that's off topic here but I do my oil changes and use nulon 10:40 or 15:40 buy 10L at around $70 which is only enough for one oil change and a top up but I've seen fleetmaster series at mr filter for $102 20L any idea on that stuff?
  2. So I have 20 or so cans of Subaru upper engine cleaner as I bought them on impulse while doing a job at a Subaru dealer got them for $6 each and apparently Subaru sells them retail for $20 a can. Mechanic there told me it's safe to use on both petrol and diesel so gave it a shot on my Subaru wrx just before I did an oil change and my god the smoke that came out of the exhaust smelt like **** and immediately after letting the smoke purge out I could tell idle was steady no more vibrations acceleration was much more responsive so I'm thinking what's your views on using it in the hilux. I have no clue where the vacuum lines are or if anyone has ever used a Subaru product in their hilux but Subaru Upper engine cleaner seems to be the equivalent to Seafoam and Lucas upper engine cleaner which I've seen many dealers use before on a whole range or cars/Utes but never the Subaru uec. The hilux could probably use an internal clean at 221000km so all your opinions welcome yey or ney?
  3. Just an update on the gearbox issue turns out it wasn't the selector or the shift fork or the synchros. Turns out the whole gearbox had to be pulled apart as the internal gear hub was somehow cracked $1320 later and the gearbox is as good as new very smooth shifting
  4. My bad ignore what I said about the clutch I just noticed it was auto haha
  5. I'm assuming the engine is a d4d here but your best bet is to take a mechanic or someone who can pick up faults. I would be wary of the injectors as on these models they are known to fail around the current kms or in the near future which can be a expensive fix. I recently Did the injectors on my 08 sr5 at 200km aftermarket was $900 each not including labour. You should be able to tell by test driving if the injectors are bad have a look at videos of bad injectors and look out for the symptoms so it will be easier to spot (vibrations, loss of power etc) Also keep an eye out for smoke out the exhaust in higher revs. Black smoke is generally okay unless it is copious amounts. White or blue smoke can mean it's burning oil and other issues so keep an eye out for that also. Take a look under the ute and inspect suspension system etc and look for wear as Toyota recently recalled a few models for suspension issues as well as the steering wheel clock Spring which deactivates the drivers airbag if faulty so ask if that repair has been carried out. Also, check if the clutch has been changed as due to towing and driver error depending on how many previous owners the oem clutch is pretty ****. I owned my ute since new and lost my clutch at only 150km with only about 20,000km towing which costs around $1000 for a heavy duty clutch not including labour. If clutch hasn't been changed and injectors seem like they are about to go soon then bargain down even lower because with injectors and clutch change your looking at 5k fix hope this helps
  6. i think you may be onto something Trent this link experienced the same sound I did before my gears went on deceleration. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2269388/broken-shift-fork Thanks for the heads up on the shift fork. Hoping to drop the gearbox after the long weekend and hopefully I won't need to replace the whole thing fingers crossed
  7. Thanks manxman, My bad completely forgot to add that in. It's a 2008 d4d 3.0l turbo diesel. The clutch was replaced at 150,000km (was on its way) but will have it checked nonetheless. Good point you make about the seals will definitely have them replaced as I've had them fail in a previous car. Currently driving a 2011 79 series v8 land cruiser and let me tell you I miss the hilux so much. Thanks for your reply mate!
  8. Hi guys, My names John im the "new guy" and it's the first time posting on this thread so please give us a heads up if I'm doing anything wrong.. So I'll cut straight to it. I was exiting the m4 motorway at prospect last night and all of a sudden I lost gears 3 and 4 completely (gears weren't engaging at all. No resistance and could move gear shift into three and four with my foot OFF the clutch). Prior to this I had noticed on that drive that in gears three and four when I would take my foot off the gas I could hear a slap noise coming from the engine bay or like metal hitting on something in the engine. Here's the weird part. Gears 1,2 and 5 still worked perfectly so being 15km away from home I drove home shifting from 2nd straight through to 5th as I don't have nrma and really didn't want to get a tow it the other gears worked fine. A friend of mine who's a mechanic seems to think since it's only gears 3 and 4 that it could possibly be my "bow synchro" for 3 and 4 or possibly the selector. If anybody knows what my issue could be any help would be appreciated before I take it into the shop. I've managed to source a 2nd hand gearbox without crank case off another Hilux which has only done 51000km for $900 delivered. (Mates rates through mates workshop) p.s my lux has 221000km on the clock probably about 20k towing.. I've owned this ute since new so I know what limits Its been pushed to and I've never towed more than I should have or neglected to service everything so it's a bit of a shock to have my gearbox seem to fail at just 221km. Thanks
