  1. Now that the Prado is about to hit 7000km the fuel efficiency looks to be improving. Last actual consumption was 10.9L/100km from fuel receipts mostly city driving and included a round trip up north to Nelson Bay, etc with 6 passengers, (4 adult, two kids) luggage etc, and a drive on Stockton beach with six on board using low range with 20psi tyres. Range of about 1250km before fuel light. The dash consumption is proving accurate up to +/- 0.1 Assuming roads are completely flat without hills and minimal traffic I can get the dash readout to read 8.3-8.5 after reset which seems a massive improvement to my previous best of 11 when the car was new. Seems easier to get better figures in the manual version. But any hint of hills in my auto Prado then I get 9-10 and throw in a bit of heavy Sydney traffic and it is minimum 11. If I'm in a rush and traffic isn't so good I'll get 12. The Prado can accelerate strong off the lights too but then it is 13-14. I'm always running dual zone Aircond front and back. I haven't seen 6.5-7 yet though. That's a great figure! Years ago I had a petrol 4 cylinder RAV4 which I recall drank close to what the diesel Prado does. It lacked pulling power for the amount it drank. I also had a petrol 4Runner a while back drank 17-19 every time, never gave trouble but I couldn't afford that kind of fuel so I traded it in. Ok at this point, overall My wife and I are very happy with the performance of this Prado. We've found It does what it was designed for very well. It carries heavy big loads without issue and six people on freeways with adequate acceleration. We were very surprised how sure and easy the heavy Prado handled moderate deep sand and shallow water crossings with six people onboard: excellent off-road, almost effortless, confidence inspiring, and still reasonable fuel consumption and smooth power delivery. No bits of the car falling off. (We took a popular lux soft roader same patch of sand and each time a piece of the car came off) And the seats are comfortable like a lounge room. I don't find it underpowered as others report. It can accelerate hard if floored. (And our other daily driver is a sub 4.5 petrol car, maybe I'm getting old but we are choosing to use the Prado a lot more.) So as the car's fuel efficiency is improving as the engine beds in and we try more of the car's capabilities we now understand why Prado Diesels are a best seller. Hopefully the consumption improves further with age. Will keep you all posted.
  2. Hi Geoff, my Prado has three things showing average consumption: The App graph, the dash average(with a current consumption gauge) and a seperate "after refuel" dash average. The "after refuel" on my Prado doesn't zero on demand. Maybe it's a Kakadu thing? I am about to hit 5000km so hopefully it loosens up. I am now averaging about 12L/100km in the City as I got tired of crawling slowly from traffic lights. I would say with my driving style 11.5-12L/100km would be the norm for driving in Sydney, usually with Aircond on, driving conservatively but not extremely slowly, with a range of 1150km before fuel light. One thing I did notice is the consumption doesn't seem affected by load much. It doesn't matter if there is one person in the car or seven, consumption doesn't change much. But yes, hills increase consumption.
  3. Most recent consumption figure for a full tank averaged at 11.6l/100km from fuel receipt, mostly city driving (probably 90% city) and one trip to Blue mountains and back to Sydney. Tyre pressure 38psi, usually two people in car and usually very conservative driving. Aircond front and back on. Total range achieved was about 1160 km before fuel light came on. Filled 132l. The Toyota "average" fuel consumption showed 11.2 and the Toyota "after refuel" showed 11.8l/100km. I finally figured out how to get the stubborn "after refuel" consumption readout to change and reset: the low fuel light has to be on ( the tank has to be "empty") the tank then has to be filled full to the brim the fuel consumption read outs needs to be zeroed at the petrol station straight after filling After I did this the "after refuel" readout which was usually stuck to 11.8 went up to 30.0 then fluctuated wildly and so far settled at 12.4l/100km city driving. Will see how this new tank goes as I've put in a bottle of injector cleaner. Another thought, what could contribute to a higher than expected fuel consumption in some new Prados? poor quality diesel? wheel alignment issues? Slight vehicle mechanical build differences? transmission slipping more than it should? Different breaking in approaches with different owners? Happy Easter!
  4. Appears like there is fuel left in reserve after "empty". Others say it needs to be filled slowly so the fuel doesn't foam to get the full tank in? Yes the Prado seems quite thirsty up hills!
  5. I noticed driving in the south eg around Hurstville region where it is hilly the car drinks a lot more than in the inner west where there aren't many hills. I think your theory is most likely correct.
  6. Hi Geoff_C, Yes it looks like it needs to be zeroed to be meaningful. Those figures are close to what I am getting. I get better figures if the aircond is off . It's still not close to the official claim of 8/100! I did ask my local mechanic and his opinion is that the ADR figures tend to be BS. I'm still not sold on the range which is repeatedly displaying about 1200km on a full tank.
  7. My fuel consumption screen ("after refuel") has been reading 11.8 for ages. Doesn't seem to change much. Seems heavily damped, I remember it changing 0.1 occasionally after a very long drive. I am looking more at the responsive "average" fuel consumption and can reset this before a drive. It's a challenge to keep this from fluctuating but I can get it to read 11.2-12.5 L/100km in the city with very careful driving and aircond on. If I even try to keep up with other traffic eg camrys, volkwagens, corollas etc then it is up to 13-15L/100km. JohnLynn is getting a decent display of 9.2L/100km and range of 1460km. This sort of economy and range I've never seen in light city driving. Anyone else getting this kind of range? Assuming I go for a long highway drive and my average fuel consumption falls from 11.4L/100km down 22% to 9.2L/100km I am hoping the range should recalculate and redisplay on the trip computer as 1450km? I am finding 40psi a bit harsh on rough roads, I'm trying 38psi for now.
  8. Hi Doug I'll give 40psi a try, drive slowly and update the consumption I get.
  9. Hi Geoff_C, I am am puzzled how others are getting sub 10 consistently during mixed driving with mostly city. I have yet to test our Prado on freeway driving to see what it does. I would hope it gets better as the engine loosens up. I too need that back window sign to apologise for my very slow driving! Maybe instead of "Caution Child on Board" we could have "Caution SLOW VEHICLE: Fuel Saving in Progress"
  10. Hi Cudestir, Sounds like you are getting reasonably good economy consistently. Last fill up driving very slowly city stop start but freeflowing returned 11.38L/100km from fuel receipts and indicated range is about 1250km on full tank which was actually surprisingly not too bad. (Toyota meter said 11.8L/100km) Running 35psi allround. Short trips 15 minutes-40minutes. Some hills. Maybe this Prado is normal. I don't know. I did notice the engine lugging up hill like it's struggling, the steering wheel and the accelerator pedal vibrates up hill. But very smooth on flat roads and when coasting and Idle. Hope this is normal for diesels. If the high consumption persists I might ask for a loan car like you suggested.
  11. Hi everyone it's good to hear your experiences. Build quality control issues with Prados? I have found our demo 2.8 D4D as thirsty as comparable petrol engines. Straight from showroom first tank averaged 17L/100km second tank with more careful driving 13L/100km. Last fill up to 14L/100km. Mixed driving mainly free flowing city traffic. Calculated from fuel receipts. Car has about 3000km on odo. Mobil special diesel then Caltex diesel. Toyota technician said its normal and due to driving style. Provided a convincing info sheet on Adr figures and how they don't equate to real life figures. Could not fault the car. But altering our driving style still does not improve the consumption much. So lately I've been driving very carefully accelarating slowly ( no revs above 1800) and letting go of the gas 1km in advance off traffic lights braking last 100m turning off the Aircond etc... It's become a ridiculous obsession of myself and my wife to try to improve fuel economy. After 75km from full tank average is 11.9km/100km according to Toyota meter. This would probably be 12.5-13L/100km if calculated from fuel receipts. This is accelerating slowly off the line as the engine has no initial punch and cars behind are not happy. One or two people but otherwise empty car. If our 2.8 Prado could even achieve 10l/100km I would be happy but it has never done so! The 2.8 turbo diesel is 63% more thirsty than the quoted Toyota Adr figures.sometimes up to 90% more thirsty if driven normally and not pushed. issue with the engine, drivetrain or factory quality control? Regarding driving style we have previously driven the 3.0l turbo diesel fully loaded floor to ceiling without any special careful driving styles and easily got 9-10 l/100km mixed driving including hard acceleration at lights. The photo is of the fuel consumption when driving in light city traffic and driving purely for economy. My guess is that it's not impressive.
