  1. Had the same problem. Spent $4000 on new pump, injectors, manifold clean etc. Turned out to be the fuel line between fuel filter and injector pump had rubbed through on the bottom of the air filter. Not enough to leak diesel. Definitely enough to suck air. Long story short, fixed and power restored with a $5 hose, BUGGER. Hope this helps.
  2. I’ve had the whole dash apart twice and no plug to be found. What am I missing? Would buy the clock if I could find the plug. Mine is a 2005 KZN165R.
  3. Not just any semi sealed. Definitely buy Hella. Had cheap, then Narva and can confirm that the Hella’s are far superior.
  4. I upgraded mine with Hella semi-sealed. Worth every cent, huge improvement. Also have Hella 4000 driving lights (both spread beams), all halogen. Awesome result. Have tried HID, but went back to halogen. I live in outback QLD so good lights are very important. Best combination after much trial and error. Hope this helps.
  5. Spent some time playing with lifts on my KZN165R. Ended up back at standard height as lifting it ruined its ride, handling and flex off road. I found it very difficult to find what standard height is but finally got measurements direct from Toyota (attached). At least it will give you a starting point as most Hilux’s have been played with but as I said best ride and handling is standard. Standard diameter tyre is 738mm diameter (29.1 inches). You can legally increase diameter by 50mm so 31s (788mm) are the largest legal tyre you can fit. Bigger than that and there is no point insuring it as they can knock back your claim due to your vehicle being unroadworthy. That includes comprehensive and third party. I do believe 31s fit with no issues. No lift required although legally the speedo has to be recalibrated.
  6. Welcome aboard, got some pics?
  7. I have a 2005. KZN165R 3.0TD. It uses 12l/100. Around town and highway up to 110km/h are about the same. It is standard, well serviced, has done a bit over 300000kms and has always had the same fuel economy. It has very similar acceleration to the later D4D KUN26, but has a lower top speed of 145kph. I think this is due to a narrower torque curve. (Runs out of torque over 3000rpm) Still very respectable performance though. Excellent choice, love mine, still looks and drives like new. Only ever had to change consumables and yes it does go bush. The last of the unbreakable Hilux’s Welcome to the forum and please post some pics
  8. Any snorkel is well worth the effort. Hiluxes get their air from inside the guard with no way of getting a cool, clean supply. I accessed the ECU in my KZN165R with an OBD reader and found that the intake temperature at the air box gets to around 80deg c on a 40deg day. No engine will make power at these temperatures. I have since installed a TJM snorkel and now the intake temperature is never more than 10deg above ambient. I get much better performance since installing the snorkel and my air cleaner stays cleaner.
  9. I have just successfully modified the factory temperature gauge on my KZN165R. As some of you may know factory temperature gauge in hiluxes are set up in the factory to show about a third from 70deg to 110deg. I didn't find this acceptable. This has been done to show you what they want you to see, not what the real temps are. This makes it about as useful as a temp light. Damage is done before it tells you anything. I did not want to install an after market gauge so I searched for how to take the dead zone out of the factory temp gauge. I found two sites that explain how to do it but they were for a series 2 Hilux/Surf and the other for a Landcruiser. The instructions in both of these sites are accurate in how to do it but not what size resisters are required in KZN165R Hilux. Search temp gauge mod in google and find the Toyota Surf site. I found that if you follow the instructions found but use the factory 75ohm resister that you remove instead of the 56ohm specified and a 100ohm resistor you will get a good result. Mine sit just below half at 82deg, which is the thermostat temp and hits the red at 100deg C, completely linear. The Landcruiser site is also good as it has a good explanation of what the resistors do. The 100ohm resistor sets the centre position of the gauge and the 75ohm changes the range. With this mod anywhere in the white zone is safe. You will be surprised to see what the temperature is actually doing. Mine sits at 82deg around town at 60kph. At highway speeds it varies between 85deg and 92deg (hill climb) If I hold it flat it takes about 10km reach the highest I have can achieve of 95deg which is about 3mm below the top white line. 95deg is the temp that the thermostat is fully open. If I continue this linear rise the red would be 100deg. This was all verified with access to the ECU via an OBD reader. I am very happy with the result as the KZN165Rs are known to crack heads if they get too hot and the factory gauge does not tell you what he temp is actually doing. I found the mod very simple as it just requires desoldering a resistor and diode and soldering in 2 resistors. I trust you find this information helpful, regards Geoff
  10. G'day Jack, if the tick goes away whenever you touch the clutch it is definitely a dry throw out bearing. You get access by pulling back the boot on the clutch fork where it goes into the bell housing. Use lube in a pressure pack can with that little pipe on it so you can direct the lube onto the bearing without spraying it all over the clutch plates. A little bit won't hurt. Put the boot back and you are done. 5min job, too easy. I found motorcycle chain lube works well. I have to do mine about every 12 months or if it has been through water. With your pedal not engaging until it is near the floor I would be looking at the master cylinder which may be low on fluid or require bleeding. The clutch system is very similar to your brake system. Good luck and let me know how you go.
  11. Common tick in Hilux is a dry thrust bearing. Easy to fix. Pull out rubber boot on clutch arm where it goes into bell housing and give it a spray with some lube. I have to do mine about once a year or if its been through water. 5 min job :)
  12. Not sure about 265/75R16's but I would check the diameter against standard. Going bigger will upset the gear ratios which Toyota carefully worked out for best power and economy for engine. Going bigger will decrease power, increases fuel use and give you an incorrect speedo. I was very surprised at the difference in gear ratios between the turbo and non turbo Hilux. My mate has a non turbo. If you want 16" rims check which tyre matches standard. It will be fairly low profile as standard 15" tyres are 255/70R15's. I run Bridgestone 604V 9R15's on mine as they match original diameter so speedo is accurate and gives best power and economy. Handles much better than the cheese cutters it came with. I also worked out the correct tyre pressures which gives better ride, handling and a perfectly even wear. I get 80000 kms to a set, going for 100000 this time rotating all 5. I rotate every 5000kms with the oil change. This is based on the tyre information on the tyre and the actual vehicle weight on each tyre. I took it to a weigh bridge and weighed back and front separately then using the data on the tyre worked out the correct cold pressure. The formula is (max pressure divided by max weight times actual weight). On my Hilux it works out to 31psi front and 23psi rear with no load. It works out about 2psi for every extra 100kgs added in the back but I use the formula. I also did a lot of experimenting with suspension lift as well by winding up the torsion bar which looks good but found that it upset the handling and gave a rough ride so I wound it back to standard.
  13. Drive shaft spins faster than the wheels so unlikely to be that. Can't think of anything that spins slower.
  14. Thank you again for the reply. Jacked it removed all wheels, checked all suspension for play or noises, couldn't find any critters (unless it's a Gremlin that's bloody good at hiding). My hilux is probably the most over maintained hilux in Mount Isa and is in very clean condition although it does get used as a 4wd pig shooting, camping etc. and it has done about 280000 kms. Due to this maintainance and only ever using genuine parts it still looks and drives like new accept this bloody noise I can't find. The sound is similar to the sound of a relay and is random. I can not make it do it when stationary. Moving at all speeds from less than walking to highway speed. Not all bumps create it and it does't always line up with the bumps. Doesn't do it on really smooth road. I have confirmed that it happens over the same bits of road every time. I have also confirmed it is not a relay by rolling down a hill with the battery disconnected so no electrical power, but keep thinking I'm sure it will be something simple that I haven't thought of when I find it so still very open to any suggestions, many thanks.
  15. Thanks for the reply. My model does not have a speedo cable. All electronic
  16. Was hoping someone has had found and fixed a random click/tick coming for bottom of A pillar, corner of windscreen on drivers side. It is driving me crazy as I can't find its source. I have tried everything. I have confirmed that it is not the dash as I have had it stripped down. Dash removed, right mud guard off, A pillar trim off, door open or closed, bonnet opened or closed and it is still there. It can be heard outside as well sounding like it is coming from the rain box in front of windscreen. I have rolled down a hill with the engine off and ignition off at below walking speed walking beside it and it an be heard inside and out so not electrical. I removed the cover over rainbox and checked it and there is nothing inside that could account for the sound. I have also sprayed around windscreen, all joints around rainbox and A pillar with WD40 with no change. I am now thinking the sound may be transferring to that area from somewhere else, but where? I even had guy that works for GMH finding rattles in new cars put about 10 hrs into finding it with no result. So far with all I have done, nothing has even changed the sound, the BUGGER is laughing at me and it's driving me mad. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanksTop
