  1. No replies????? Surely someone can help me out here? Well I have fitted the new engine and things are not good. I have had to re-use the old pump because the one that came with the new engine was not working on one cylinder. The engine blows a lot of black smoke (like heaps!!!) especially under load and also lacks power. There was fairly severe "pinging" so I have rechecked the timing using the "spill tube" method and replaced the centrifugal timer on the front of the pump. I have had the injectors checked and they are ok. They were overhauled a few years ago but I thought some rubbish may have got into them during the changeover. Can anyone refer me to a doc that tells me exactly what all the adj. screws do exactly? How about a description of exactly how this pump works? I have looked at the 2H inj pump repair manual on line but it does not explain in a clear manner. I note also that the oil pressure is showing high. Like off the scale. Could be just the sender but more liely the PRV is stuck. What are the implications if any of high oil pressure? Thanks. Bill W.
  2. David, Is the problem still solved? Did the earth strap clean up finally fix the problem? I have just seen your post and I have exactly the same problem with my old hj47 cruiser. I could see the EDIC switching the engine off then on (only when the lights are on) and believed it was the alternator at fault. The Amp meter doesn't seem to be working but the battery does not run down either so I thought the alt output was just low. I didn't treat it as urgent as I very rarely use the "old girl" (the cruiser that is!) at night. Cheers. Bill W.
  3. Mik, How did you go with your project? I am currently fitting a recon engine to a 1982 HJ47 farm ute so came across your post whilst posting some queries of my own. I also am a Fitter & Machinist and did my trade course at Sydney Tech in the 1960's. So that makes me an "old codger" now but still enjoy making/doing things with my hands. Did you move to the Mid/North Coast??? I am in the Northern Rivers area and have been here for 35 yrs now. almost a local! Regarding your questions.... I also have a 1978 FJ45 with std 2F engine. Great engine but heavy on fuel. The HJ47 (2H engine) is also a great unit and does not use as much fuel. Both are unregistered farm trucks. Rgds. Bill.
  4. I am currently fitting a recon 2H engine to my 1982 HJ47 ute. I have a feeling that the new engine may have been a turbo unit but I want to use the reconned injectors from the old engine. My question.....is there a difference between a "turbo" head and a "non turbo" head? Will the old injectors fit a turbo head? The threads appear to be ok but what of the seats, etc. Also, what about the injector pump??? Is that a different unit between the turbo & non-turbo engines? Anything else that may cause me problems??? Cheers. Bill.
  5. Ryan, I note that you have not had a reply to your post.......I'm no expert but I'll have a go! I have an HJ47 (2H engine) and have the same problem as you. I have had the injectors serviced but to no avail. I have put up with the difficult starting for a couple of years but it is much worse in cold weather and already is just about running the battery flat whilst trying to start it. I did a compression test using a home made setup - a modified glow plug stem with a valve in it + a gauge fitted to the end of it. Readings were well down so I concluded that that was the problem. The engine blew lots of smoke when it did finally fire up as well! So, I am now in the process of fitting a recon engine. I would suggest you do a comp test to eliminate engine wear problems. Cheers. Bill.
