  1. What did you end up doing? Sticking with a 3L would make sense from a low fuss perspective. The 3L naturally aspirated gets rather asthmatic gong up hills from my recollection when I had one years ago. If you could afford the extra $, putting in a sensibly boosted turbo would be worth consideration for a bit of extra zing / towing capability.
  2. Replacing the engine to deal with a blown head gasket seems a bit over the top. I agree with Conrod, stick with the 5L / 5L-E that's in there. Probably just need some TLC. Find a decent diesel shop and get it checked out. I've got a 1999 3.0L diesel (non-turbo), since new. Solid engine. Do the right thing with regular oil, oil filter, fuel filter changes and air filter cleans and you'll get 100s of thousands of kms of reliable service.
  3. How many k's? Last air filter replacement? Last fuel filter replacement? I'd be changing the filters as a couple of easy ones to rule out and can't hurt given that you probably don't have the historical knowledge of were the current stuff has been prior to you taking over. What do you get from a compression test? If this stuff doesn't fit with your skill set &/or available tool library, then get your machine checked out by your local diesel specialist. Delving in deeper, if your injectors do need work, you'll probably want to be sure that they function correctly. The test doesn't appear radically complex: but as with most of these things it's tools, wherewithal, knowledge and time. The 5L / 5L-E engine is in that "old school" category, so it shouldn't take too much to spot the issue. My 5L just chugs along and has had the benefit of regular servicing over its lifetime. It's a solid piece of kit. Whatever is the issue in your case, hopefully it's not an expensive fix.
  4. I recently installed a 10 blade fan to replace the original 7 blader that came with my LN167R. Changed out the hydraulic clutch at the same time. I can't speak for your model but I'd guess it's a similar deal. Hopefully your research turns up a positive.
  5. To get an idea of what you're up for, you could try these options to get started. Get your vehicles OEM wheel track / offset detail from the Road Vehicle Descriptor Online system @ https://myrta.com/rvd/index.jsp Use this calculator https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/ to compare your original fit spec with what you're considering and you'll get some idea of how the tyre will grown inside your wheel arch. Useful too, in terms of understanding speedo error as well. I've used the steps above recently to get my vehicle's tyre/rim fit back to spec in terms of wheel track. I had 31x10.50R15 fitted that I'd changed to years ago without doing enough research and too much faith in the tyre shop. The tyres fit fine and gave me no issues off road in terms of clearance. However, when I measure the wheel track it was outside legal spec. My tyres were due for replacement recently, so I used that opportunity to get back within the fold. Fortunately, where I am, I've got access to a specialist 4WD / tyre fitting outfit nearby who are well versed in the issues associated with lifting vehicles. They sorted me out with a tyre rim spec and things are looking good. I'm glad I consulted the right people. Online calculators are fine but to close things out, working with the right expertise is what I would strongly recommend. I've got a big name tyre outfit 5 minutes up the road from me but they just couldn't deliver when it came to dealing with something a little bit out of the ordinary.
  6. You could check out Supafit Seat Covers over in Perth. email/call them about your specific needs. They'll probably have a pattern in their files to suit you. Their kit is in my vehicle and they're solid stuff / go the distance.
  7. HD Automotive over Brisneyland way at Rocklea, have a fuel pump exchange programme and from their website, a 5L-E back conversion to a mechanical fuel pump is routine for them. From what I can make out, you'd have to source an old unit to send to them as part of the deal. The dudes over at Berrima Diesel outside Wollongong have been very helpful/responsive to queries I've had in the recent past. They're bound to have done this sort of thing at least once, I'd bet. That's another line of inquiry that you could check out.
