  1. Ok, so it's been quite a while since I posted on here. I stumbled across this post again when I was searching for RN40 in google and thought I'd better update things since a lot has happened ;) I finally decided on an engine and it's now running. There's a 1UZ in there now (from a 1991 V8 Soarer). Visit http://www.lextreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11178 for the full build with lots of photos.
  2. Does anyone know if there's a clip out there that I can use to attach a center cap on my rear wheels. The center caps I've got fit perfectly on the front wheels because they go over the grease caps, but the rear wheels don't have grease caps. Here's some photos to show what I mean... The front wheels look like this... The rear wheels look like this... The center cap on the front wheel looks like this... Andrewzuku
  3. My brother and I have just finished the hard part of an engine conversion. We've mounted a 1UZ-FE and Auto (A431E) gearbox from a 1991 Soarer into my 1981 Hilux. The sway bar won't fit back on because the gearbox sits too close (only just). My question is: If I don't put it back on will there be too much body roll? I'm not really interested in the whole race scene (which might sound a bit weird considering what we're building) so my definition of "too much body roll" is meant in normal driving.

    18R or 3Y

My brother has an '88 hilux with a 2Y and friend has a 4x4 with the 3Y. Neither of them need to run the valve additive. Looks like the 3Y would be better than the 18R in terms of fuel used. I think they're both 2 litres, but the 18R is slightly more horsepower. Still, if your engine is stuffed, and the new one comes with a 5-speed gearbox, that's what I'd choose. I hated the 4 speed - thirsty on the highway!
  5. I've recently started an engine conversion putting a 1UZ-FE and Auto gearbox into my hilux (we've just finished removing the old engine, repainting the engine bay, and grinding off the old engine mounts). I'm a little obsessed at the moment and since I'm a graphic designer and computer programmer, I've made the ute in photoshop and a little page where you can see what the ute looks like in different colours with either a style-side or trayback. I'm not sure if anyone else will find it usefull, but I thought I'd put it out there. http://www.wyatt-software.com/hilux/
  6. Yeah, after a fair bit of reading, I think I'd be better off going with a 1G-GTE since they're physically smaller. Still puts out good power for what I want to use the ute for. Thanks for the advice. I'll see if i can go measure a newer hilux than mine too.
  7. I've got a 2-wheel drive 81 Hilux (RN40) Photo in Gallery here At the moment it has the 12R engine (1600cc) and 4-speed column shift which is very sluggish. I've been saving my pennies and am nearly ready to start looking for new engines + gearboxes. A mate of mine is looking into getting me an RB20DET and Gearbox out of an R32 GTS4 Skyline very cheap, but if that doesn't go through I'd rather stick to a Toyota engine and not have a mongrel. My question is: Does anyone know if a 1JZ-GE will fit without modifying the firewall? Has this been done before? From the firewall to the front of my radiator is about 780mm. I've seen it done with the 1JZ-GTE in a newer hilux, but I'm not sure if the engine bays would be the same length.
