  1. Its a CJ5 or CJ8 Jeep with some horrible custom front
  2. Mechanically its not hard, but the weight of the gearbox and the lop sided weight of the t/case makes it difficult lying on your back. A gearbox lifter will help . I prefer to pay the 4-5 hours labour to remove/install the gearbox
  3. The problem as I guess is the fuel cut solenoid is not getting power and therefore wont start. You can run a piece of wire direct from the positive side of the battery to the fuel cut solenoid. The solenoid is at the rear of the pump and has 2-3 black coated wires coming off. The wires there sometimes come loose so check that 1st To turn it off you will have to disconnect the wire. I dont know about the 79 but the 75 series manual recommends doing this when you are stuck. It worked fro 105 series owner with the same engine stuck a few hundred klms out of Broome recently
  4. Some very good pics there TRDgirl. They deserve to be posted on a site like the 4WD Monthly forum where there is a bit more traffic
  5. I wouldnt get too hung up on the rarity bit. Its only special to a cruiser head, anyone else wont give a rats ***** as reflected in the red book price. A fair price is hard to determine, there is not many 40 series of any type with a good body and interior these days. There was an LX on ebay in tassie a few months back that went for $1800 but it was rusted badly All engine and mechanical parts are easily available but dont expect much from Toyota as they have just about ceased dealing with vehicles this old. I think your mechanic overstated the extent of the cost of taking it to a diesel mechanic. Most of the maintenance is filters and a grease. Once every 4 years take the injectors out and have them rebuilt for $220. Another thing to consider is that these are not suitable as a daily driver. You would be better off having a small cheap car as your main transport and putting the 42 away for the weekends. The 40 series is slow, rough and handlles terrible on road. Brakes are agricultral and the cabin noise is not pleasant. If you try and drive it everywhere you will lose interest pretty quick. This point needs serious thought. I drive a FJ73 with a 1HZ diesel fitted and a HZJ75 and driving them all the time is a chore but they are streets ahead on comfort. For $10k you could get a very nice 73/74 series.(73 have a 3F or 3B and the 74 has a turbo version of a 3B)
  6. So if anyone is able to help me please check out the more detailed post I have running at the US IH8MUD: http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=133800 I would really appreciate an aussie perspective on this guys -= it looks good but you can never be too careful. Will Information such as where you are tends to attract more answers for such things as parts and knowhow availabilty as it varies from country to country. The vehicle you are looking at is rarish. They didnt make many and not many countries got them and many examples have long since been chopped up or rusted away. If its a complete immaculate rust free body then it would be wise to keep it that way. I think there are 2 other owners of these on MUD It should have a 5sp and a forward facing rear seat and 3 windscreen wipers which are unique to this model. As for parts, most body parts are interchangeable with petrol models. The engine is in wide use all over the world and is there are heavier duty versions still in production for trucks and buses in 3rd world countries. It wont be hard to keep it running if you take the time to study up. You have a long way to go before you reach 600000 klm but I doubt if the engine will go much past 400000klms. When the engine goes south ,rebuild it. A full rebuild kit starts at something like $550 in Australia If you want something to chop up and do a V8 conversion then leave the 42 to someone who appreciates it.
  7. Basically they are all the same. There is only a drier and a condenser at the front plus some wiring . The fans may come on when the vehicle is in heavy traffic and would be triggered by a temp sensor some where. However Im guessing the fans may have been added on by someone . My volvo has a fan on the condenser but not my landcruiser. I would take it to someone ,you will have to do that to have it regassed. If it has not been converted to the new gas that will also have to be done, which means a new drier and different fittings to add the gas. They usually put new seals in the metal tubes but its not much. The wiring could go to the fast idle solenoids. They switch on a vaccum device on the inj pump to make it idle faster when switched on.
  8. Im not sure of the size of the plug nut ,but its big probably 24mm. Supercheap,Repco Auto1 all stock service parts and budget tools and manuals . The horn mechanism ring and button can be bought separate. Its the same as a 70 series and maybe even some Toyota cars. Check for corrosion on the horn contacts up front. They cop all the weather up there and most corrode Have a look in the Quokka, lots of 60 series stuff in there this week
  9. Has it just started gobbling fuel or has it always got those figures? I would pull the hiclones out and see what happens. Maybe get a compression test,if that checks out get it tuned by someone who good with them and have it dynoed. I know its sending you broke ,but youll go broke quicker driving it like it is :(
  10. Im glad you liked it. Most of the paint was original. The front around the headlights had a quick blowover but it looked ok. It had a spot of rust in the floor, but it didnt seem to be rusting quickly if you know what I mean Apart from that it was original. The winch had been removed, but all the connections seemed to be there. I think it ran off the PTO. It was 5sp with discs and power steering:rolleyes: Ive added an interior shot The wagon was mostly sold in the US. Someone told me that aust got the second highest amount but it must have been a very small number.
  11. I should have added that this diesel HJ45 is one of 217 built for the aust army and used for northern defence and surveillance.
  12. This one is a US spec 45 series wagon petrol, probably a mid 60s vintage. We didnt get too many of these in oz. Ive only seen one in Perth and another for sale in a trader mag :D
  13. I like the diesel 45. I came across this one and nearly bought :D
  14. Hi Phil. I would recomend getting a workshop manual. I use the Australian produced Gregories number 507. It covers everything you would need to know and only cost about $30 from Kmart. I do my own servicing from this book for my petrol 73 series and it saves me a fortune. My landcruiser has the same mechanicals and electrics as yours. I use Castrol GTX in the engine and Castrol VX80 in the gearbox,t/case and front diff. The rear diff takes any quality brand LSD oil. Landcuisers are so common in WA all the parts shops have a good knowledge of fluids and aftermarket parts For second hand spares I would recomend Midland 4wd Wildon st Bellvue or Tonys 4wd wrecking in Midland. For new I use Odin auto parts in Balcatta, 4WDParts in Welshpool and Roodogspares on ebay Your model would be a FJ60. Sites like these have free manual downloads but you really need broadband http://www.birfield.com/ USA http://perso.wanadoo.fr/adherence.4x4/index.htm France but in English Ross Perth WA
