    Servicing

A lot of services seem to be just checking oil levels, changing engine oil, etc. If you're keen enough you could do it yourself and save yourself a fortune. Nearly every second service for the camry is simple things you could easily do at home anyway. Slight thread hijack - is it worth having the valve timing checked on a 2004 camry at 90000km? I can do most of the servicing myself, just not keen on pulling apart the whole engine.
  2. Is is a rhythmical flash, or is it more of a flicker? ie does it flash at a consistent rate for a period of time, or does it turn on an off randomly? Could be a faulty globe. One of my dash lights flickered a bit before it eventually died.
  3. Well, I've got the parts, pull out the air box only to find... the new heat shield doesn't fit! For some reason all the pictures I can find have the air intake hose at the bottom on the air box, whereas mine is off to the right a bit. Any ideas on how to proceed? The heat shield definitely won't fit...
  4. Sounds about right. I just found an installation manual for the kit linked above and my stock box looks identical to it, assuming aus Toyota didn't add anything inside the box itself. I'm looking at eBay, are there any other places I should be looking at for a decent price? I'm hoping to put it in within the next fortnight if possible.
  5. I've attached the photos of the airbox below, hopefully it's enough. Engine bay definitely needs a bit of a clean though :) So do I just need the CAI kit, or do I need another part? BTW thanks for the help so far, much appreciated!
  6. Fair enough, to be expected I guess. Any other places to look at besides ebay?
  7. A forum link from 2007. The link below is from August - apparently $750+ from autobarn? http://auscam.org/forum/camry-talk/cold-air-induction/?action=printpage I can get it shipped from the US on ebay for around $350, but if I was to do it, I'd need to have it in the next week or so. I might make a few calls tomorrow and see what prices I can get.
  8. Yeah, I'll get some pics when I get a chance later today. It's a 2004 stock Camry Altise 4 cyl with an auto gearbox. BTW How much are these things normally? For some reason I had it in my head that they were around $200, but what I'm seeing so far is ~$600 based on some old google links? If it's getting that high, it would be more economical to get a RSB installed... Unless I'm just looking at the wrong thing?
  9. The car is due for new tyres, 90,000km service and rego within the next few months, so I'm assuming I'll be keeping it a while. How hard is it to install? From what I understand it's just pulling the old one out and putting the new one in - ie doesn't require any custom fittings. Looking at this one here: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=69-8609TTK
  10. Hi Everyone, I'm thinking of doing some cheap minor performance mods to my Gen 5 Camry. At this stage I'm thinking of starting with a cold air intake, but is it really worth the $100 odd to put it in? Would I actually notice much of a difference to performance/sound? The reason why I'm looking at doing this is that it seems to be a relatively easy mod to DIY and is quite cheap. The other option is the rear sway bar, but I have no idea where to start for that yet. I'm assuming the local autobarn or what not would have CAI kits available? As you can see, I'm quite noob at this, so any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
  11. That's not a bad idea DJKOR, I'll have to give that a try next time! Also, Kenshin X, how do you normally wash the soap off the car? Do you drive back to the car wash or something?
  12. I usually wash my car at the local self-serve spray thingo up the road from me, but I don't really like using the foaming brush on my car - it seems to scratch it a fair bit. We don't have a large water tank, so I like to use the pressure hoses at the self-serve. I was just wondering what other pedantic people like myself do to wash their car to comply with the water restrictions?
  13. The only thing to look out for is that you can't inset them into the panel, because there isn't enough space behind with the bolts for the side mirrors. I have black tweeters, so it almost looks stock anyway.
  14. I ended up putting them on the black sail thing. Looks quite good and it doesn't sound too bad. Was also easy to install, unlike getting the amp power through the firewall...
  15. Yeah, I think I agree. I don't think I have any airbags in the pillars in my model, but cutting chunks out of the plastic on the a pillar isn't appealing. At least if I put it in the sail the black tweeter will look more stock I guess... The baffles I'm getting for the the 6x9" to 6.5" converter thingo has room for the tweeter to go next to it in the door, but I don't think I want them down that low. btw I love your stivo andrew!
  16. So, I'm putting in a few audio additions to my car, and wanted to know where the best place for the tweeters are? To put them in the factory location on the dash will require some mods anyway, so if it's going to be better someplace else, I guess now is as good a time as any to get it right! I was thinking possibly insetting them on the black "sail" bit on the front doors, but I'm not sure if they will fit. Any better ideas?
  17. The globe was just a standard globe ie no colouring. I had a little bit of a saerch on a few forums, and it seems that it is possible to change with a bit of work. From what I understand, the hvac unit (the air con control panel) has a green Perspex type thing inside it. It's a bit of work, but it is possible to change it. In terms of the clock, you can't change the colour of the panel, but some people have successfully changed the colour using potography gells. For example, if you put a magenta film in front of it you can make it white. I've yet to see any pics of this being done though. It will also reduce the brightness of the lght comming through as well. The gear shift globe is apparently just covered by a green sleeve. If you replace that it'll change the colour. People have also changed everything to led, buy I don't thing I have the skills to do that just yet :)
  18. Thanks, it seems I suck at searching Anyway, I knew how to pull it off, but I couldn't find any globes last time I looked. So I had another crack this arvo and it turns out that the black things I thought were screws were actually the globes. 1/4 turn anticlockwise did the job. Much easier than I was trying to make it! (ie pulling the instrument panel apart). Is there an easy way to change the colour of the lighting? I'm assuming the clock and speed limit thingo are stuck as green...
  19. Hi everyone, I've had a bit of a search and haven't come up with anything yet. Does anybody know how to replace the backlights on a 2004 camry altise? 2 of the 4 behind the a/c controls are dead, and when I put in a new head unit in recently I couldn't see any way to replace them. Any ideas?
  20. Ah, bugger. Oh well, plan B then. I think there's a few gps units that can do a similar thing, so I'll look into those. Why you would go to the effort of making a proprietary plug though is beyond me. I also have the 4cyl, so it doesn't look like it's worth the effort. Thanks.
  21. I was looking at that part today, but I can't take a pic at the moment - too dark for anything useful. Mine had LHS and RHS printed on the top, and was flush with the boot with the seats folded up. Maybe try turning it the other way around?
  22. I have a 2004 Toyota Camry Altise (base model), and have seen some reports of US models having the wiring in place to simply insert the trip computer module. Does anybody know if this is possible with aus cars? I figure that I could probably find one in a scrap yard somewhere, but it won't do me much good if the sensors it needs aren't already installed. I've heard of some model commodores having a similar thing with the radio, so I figure it's possible? Has anyone had experience with this?
