Due to heat, my flywheel seems to warp, or the ring gear. My 1986 Hiace commuter won't start if the motor is driven too long, and periodically when I am driving around town. Just wondering if it is a common problem in 3Y motors in 1986 Hiace.

A few people have told me that, back in the day, a common conversion for my 1984 Hiace (3y engine), would be to swap in the electronic distributor from a certain Tarago and do away with the old points system. Now that I'm keen to go ahead on this, I can't for the life of me figure out which Tarago dizzy to get!?! Any help on this would be super appreciated! Danny

G'day all. Just got hold of a 1984 SR5 Xtracab trayback ute. It's stock standard motor as I can see with a 3YC in it and only 232,000 k's. It's also got overdrive in a auto gearbox. Just wondering if anybody could point me to some specs about the car, such as the gearbox type etc. I am happy with it but it revs like mad when cold so must be the auto choke. Any way I can disconnect it? It came with wheels of a Ford territory and 17" low profile tyres. Real heavy to steer. I am putting the original rims back on with standard tyres. That should improve the steering and economy. Does anyone know how the economy is on one of these? How many k's per liter etc? Also it has no airconditioning so I will be looking at putting that on as well. Any idea on a price? And it's got 'armstrong' steering so I want to put on power steering. Is it a big job to do? Anyway, thanks for the great forum and I'll be in touch soon with some pictures. This will be my daily ride and I won't be hotting it up or nothing ;-)
