  1. Hi We have just purchased a St184 to use in the 2017 Sh!tbox rally, a major fundraiser for the Cancer Council. The rally is not a race rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable, to drive cars worth $1,000 across Australia via some of its most arduous roads, all in the name of charity. In 2017 we will be travelling over 3,800km from Adelaide, South Australia to Cairns in North Queensland. The trip will see participants face the challenge of highly variable terrain, remote outback roads and changing climates. The route will take us via both the Oondatta Track and the Plenty Highway and is sure to be a truly memorable experience for all involved. Last year we did the rally in a Fairlane but felt it was a bit easy so this year we are doing it in a beaten up 92 ST184 we got for $400 of eBay. Will it make it? what will we do to it? What will our theme be?? All will be revealed over time. We have to keep the car budget under $1000 excluding work we do ourselves so if any local mechanical skilled people in Brisbane want to help out, please give us a shout out..   2. Hi, Thought i would upload a recent issue i had with my 1993 ST184 Celica, 5S-FE Engine, 2.2lt. I bought this vehicle second hand 18 months ago (Aug 2014), very good condition and only 160000km on it. After buying it, i wanted to fix up some minor things on the vehicle, so i put a new clutch in (the old one was right near end of life), i replaced some Sensors, Air-con regas, rear liftback struts, relays, egr module, and odd and bobs. I put a new distributor in , with new leads, plugs etc, and serviced the vehicle. I seemed to always have a bit of an issue with rough idle, and it also does not have the power and pick up that my last ST184 had. Hoping my booked in Full service/throttle body clean, EGR clean/replace might get her running smooth again, and responsive , as some times it lags and then kicks in with correct power. Anyway, the main reason for this post was because i ran into a problem recently over the last 5 weeks or so (Early 2016)...that honestly defeated me for the first time, and had to have it taken to a mechanic. Symptoms: Rough Idle (pretty sure due to major service it needs) Intermittent Starting (sometimes it would start fine sometimes after a few goes also, once or twice i sprayed ether fluid in the intake and that also worked a few time.s) Car cranked fine, battery is pretty new...just would not go at all in the end Eventually one morning , i got in the car to go to work, and no start at all. Diagnostics: This had me stumped, i had limited tooling etc for Diagnoisis Checked for loose wires, one day i would have spark, in the end i had none. Fuel Pump works. Relays are Good Distributor was near new, leads and plugs also I was leaning toward Ingniter (Ignition Module) OR the ECU itself (after advice from an experienced mechanic) I promptly secured a used Igniter and ECU Independently swapped these out, in both combinations (one at a time with currently installed units, then both parts together...all resulting in stil NO Start) Due to my Job taking up so much time, and i live remotely from much help, i ended up having it towed to a workshop. Long story short, the ignition system, ECU, Distributor, Igniter, Fuel delivery, Ignition Switch.........ALL were just fine!! What it turned out to be, was the two Plugs that plug onto the Distributor were "BAD" on the inside, they looked ok from a visual inpsection, the wires weren't loose or coming out. So $34 worth of plugs, splice into wiring harness, and away she goes again like normal. Summary: If you have limited diagnostic tooling, or spare components to swap out for fault finding. Highly recommend really checking your electrical connectors and wiring for chaffing, loose, broken wires....and in my case (not sure i would have found it after hours of frustration) check your connectors. Especially in my case where i ended up with no spark at all, even though it was mostly ok for 5 weeks aside for intermittent starting, in the end it just died. All it was , were the two plugs that go onto the sides of the Dizzy. I think one is the Crank Angle Sensor (or similar - as it's inside the Dizzy & the other is the Coil Plug) So i sure hope this helps someone out, as my car was off road for 11 days, while i was trying to figure this out, spent $360 on parts i did not need, when all it was were two electrical plugs worth $34
  3. Hey guys, Im nearly finished fixing my st184 celica, but I have discovered I have a parasitic drain drawing 0.25A when my battery is hooked up and no systems on. I have gone through the procedure of checking all my fuses, and removing them one at a time to try and find the system that is draining the battery but it seems to be nothing to do with any of the fuse systems. however when the battery terminals were on and no keys in the ignition I would hear a single clicking noise coming from the dash area I'm not sure if this is normal or a possible source of the drain, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know so I can figure this out rather then going to an auto electrician. thank you.

    here it is, pretty much finished I just got my radiator fan going, it was the sensor on my radiator down nexto to the radiator pipe. also installed a set of 17" vehichi Spikes, 215s I will need new tyres for 2 of them then its ready for a cruise!
  7. Hey guys, I recently purchased my 1991 celica sx liftback, 5spd manual 2.2L 5sfe for $500. Im currently in the progress of fixing it up to my standards, but I have discovered the ignition leads in it are in bad shape. Im in need of new leads and all the local parts dealers want $130-$200 for the leads for my car, currently I have circular top leads and my car is also distrubutor for anyone wondering, will it matter if I buy leads that have square top plugs or do I have to get circular top plugs?

Hey guys, Im in dire need of assistance I have been slowling working on my recently purchasd ST184R and getting everything back into tip top shape, when I have found the thermostat was mounted around the wrong way from one of the previous owners, of course blocking water flow and making the car over heat. I have fixed that issue but the one issue I cant solve is my thermofan will not turn on, I tested it by connecting it to battery terminals and it worked perfectly, my water pump seems to be working, thermostat is fine, all I can guess is that my fan switch is busted, I can not locate where the thermo fan switch is, and Im doing my head in trying to solve this issue, I'd rather not try and rewire or hardwire it to an ignition or anything, I would like to get it fixed properly and preferably by myself. if any one knows or has any sugestions please let me know, what they think car details 1991 ST184R 5sfe 2.2L Manual 2 door coupe gt. ignore the ignition leads,I have replaced them lol.

  10. Hi to all ! Im new on here and I actually don't own a Celica but It's in my plans as I recently smashed my WRX... I'm sure this has been spoken somewhere on here but I'm just having a little bit of trouble of finding things... So I apologise if I have repeated something for like the 50th time. I would like to know if the 3vzfe engine out of the 1991-1996 Camry will fit into the st184 celica ?? So far from the research that I have made, I have found that the Camry also had the 5sfe engine from the FWD st184. When I mean by fit I mean will it fit with minimal issues ?? (fit engine mounts, room of the engine bay, etc...) If this engine conversion is possible what gearbox (manual) would be best suited to the change ? Thanks for reading !! I'm super excited about owning a ST184 ! seb
