  1. If Xoom is right, then the natural solution is to learn from your mistakes and tailor your driving style to your car. Learn it's handling tendancies and make a mental note that you're better off keeping the boot in rather than brushing the brakes when you're half way through a corner (this applies to any car though right?). If that thought scares you then don't enter the corner so hot in the first place I guess.

Good topic though, apart from the unpleasantness before

    Totally agree!

  2. so who here can HONESTLY say that they have NEVER participated in a "street light grand prix" before?

    no one?.......thought so <_<

probably everyone mate ..... however as stated .... no need to go bragging on the forum as ur pretty much signing a confession .......

    Thanks for the heads up...

I agree in retrospect, my openness was ill conceived. I would have pulled my head in right at the start if I had been told 1st up instead of the merciless tirade by Carlo and his nodding bricks! :) At any rate, boasting about exploits was not my intent in the post, the emphasis was created by others. My previous posts have been edited to better conform.

I just wanted some advice on the cars behaviour from a technical Corolla specific side, not from a driving style aspect. As I said in my original post, Tsuchiya noted this trait as a scary peculiarity of the RunX that other models been tested did not have. So far, no one seems to have any answers.

PS. GT4 is a good safe training tool, but is no substitute for the real thing. Nuff said.

  3. Chris,

If you've had the pleasure to meet Carlo, u'd learn to find that he is a top bloke, with a world of knowledge. Please refrain from below the belt comments.

And No, i did not just draw a target on my back.

    But back on topic:

On more spirited drives and managable speeds up the mountains etc. (for me i tend to hover arounds 70 odd K) I also experience very mild "lift off oversteer"... but i don't think it's the best thing to brush the brakes mid way in the corner? - i do that too sometimes out of sheer instinct, but i feel it's better to do all the braking before the corner and accelerate through it? ...i'll try to find a picture LOL , my english is too fooby

The Handling Gremlin Answer? Handbrake Turn FWD Technique!!

*A track would be a great place to practice...or an empty gravel car park...or in GT4 :D *

    Thanks for the tip!

I do practice a fair amount in GT4 and will try the fwd oversteer. But personally I prefer to set up a neutral attitude IRL with the car as much as possible. My Stivo with just the exception of the said gremlin handles very neutral and very adjustable with the throttle, (lsd helps a lot.)

When I grow up and get a Porsche 911, I will start playing with oversteer on a track as per the naysayers.

    Back to GT4! ;)

    Chris

  4. considering you were doing 150 km/h on a public road (I don't care how quiet it may have appeared to be, you never really know what's around the corner) I feel he has a right to say what he feels, it's a free and open forum

    Cool!

Can we now get back on the topic... otherwise we can start another thread on road safety nazism and I won't have to be preached at cos I won't be reading it! :)

    Chris

  5. Lighten up!!!

    Chris,

He may well be... but in my opinion his rant against me was uncalled for, and my response was to his own below the belt comments : "I couldn't give a sh!t if you kill yourself, because one less idiot in the world is great, but don't take someone else with you."

Lets leave it a live and let live.

    Regards

    Chris

  6.

So you've actually seen first hand someones brain splattered all over a car interior have you?

You've been the first on scene to see such a sight? I have (And funny it was on a quiet country road too).

You stated you were driving at 150km/h into a corner on a public road. Country road or Metro road same thing moron, where ever you are, unexpected traffic will be there, unlike on a closed track (And you live 500km away from one, no excuse)

I couldn't give a sh!t if you kill yourself, because one less idiot in the world is great, but don't take someone else with you.

    End Rant ;)

    Lighten up!!!

    Chris

  7. take it easy as you know where this road leads too....

Yes it leads to unnecessary injuries and/or death. I'm simply expressing my own opinion so back off.

R U a coppa? You sound like one of those self righteous under brained traffic cops.

Have you seen what happens to the human head after a high speed accident stupid? I hope you never have to.

Grow up, if you really want to be testing your (lack of) driving abilities take it to a track.

Ok... so if you can take a moment to take a break from your breathless diatribe and pay some attention, I will make a few relevant points

    1. I live in the country, so I have a choice of underutilised back roads that only lead to a few farms, are sealed and I slow down for any blind corners where I do not see oncoming traffic.

    2. I have had 1 speeding fine in 7 years, basically speeding where there is no traffic and no cops!

    3. the nearest racing circuit is 500km away.

As far as trauma, maybe you should keep your preaching to yourself. In my line of work I see all sorts of minor and not so minor trauma. And I have seen enough photographic images from my mate who is a forensic odontolgist to give most nightmares. My driving skills are well above average... and no I will not challenge you to blah blah blah. If I have an off... it will be me meeting the scenery... not another road user.

My post was to talk about the handling of the car... your post was an unwelcome rant. As far as weight transfer... well DUHHH! It is the suddenness of the transfer that should be able to be tamed.

    Live well and prosper

    Chris

Chris appart from the TRD suspension are you running any other handling mods?

Only a trd rear sway bar and front strut brace

    Regards

    Chris

He is just trying to keep the road safe, lets just quit it before it starts getting too hot. But then again, who wants to get hurt...

The only thing I remember is that you should be accelerating around a bend not braking(?)....but don't kill me on that statement....I'm a complete noob.

    Hey!

I brushed the brakes to reduce a bit of understeer, not to slow down. I agree tho that braking should be completed b4 corner entry.

    Regards

    Chris

  8. There is a certain video on the forum of a corolla going into a river which demonstrates exactly what ur talking about .... sorry mark just using u for educational purposes ;-)

there we go found it .....

    ecvMXqXtA78

let me know if u want me 2 remove it mark.

    Thanks for the response guys!

Spectacular off... though I caught it both times before the rear swung around. The feeling I got was that the front end bit in and pulled the car more into the corner than the rear letting go. The solution is to wind off a bit of lock and apply some power. I still think that it is something to do with suspension geometry that may be able to be tamed somewhat with changes in suspension bushes, sway bars, spring rates, etc.

    Any thoughts?

    Chris

were u going around the bend at close to 180km/h when u caught it?

  9. Hi Guys,

I have had the trd shock and coil kit for about 6 months. I also installed the trd front trut brace and trd rear ant roll bar. The suspension is as firm and as low as I would want for day to day usage (ie. speed bumps etc.)

As to ther handling, it really grips and goes with no real understeer. The handling is very neutral and adjustable with the trottle to cancel out understeer (the lsd helps there a lot.)

I am thinking about installing a rear strut brace also. BTW is there a lower front strut brace available to help further stiffen the body?

    Regards

    Chris

  10. [update]

    far out! :o

front shock [toyota part# 48510] $265.00 inc gst

rear shock [toyota part# 48530] $215.50 inc gst

installation $231 (to replace two shocks; x2 to replace all 4)

Far out! That is expensive install!!

I had new struts and coils, plus a CES catback exhaust installed for $330!

    Chris

  11. the tune that im running is not somthing that is going to screw your engine, the AFR was only set to where it should be, the car dosent run lean enough for any issues to arise. exhaust is up to you, so far there is only one system that has proven itself on the forums both power and noise wise and most of the more modified cars are all running it, do a search for CES Exhaust and there is loads of info about. The Apexera Power FC is not a piggy back like an emanage or unichip its a full replacement ECU, the unit is not plug and play so if you decide to go ahead and do it there is a workshop in Sydney that has done 2 cars now, the 2nd car has not suffered the issues that i have so i must be the lucky one.

    Hey!

Is the data programmed into the power fc able to be downloaded onto a laptop and then transferred into another power fc?

If this is possible, then may it not be possible to specify a minimum induction and exhaust mod specification eg. CAI, CES exhaust and possibly extractors so as to standardise the engine that the tune is performed on, and then post a faq on how to diy the install of the power fc on the forum. Possibly a slightly more conservative tune than Northy with the possibility of having a tuner do the final tweaking to get the max out of it.

The tuner in Sydney could at a price upload the data onto the power fc and then off you go!

    Chris

  12. hey Chris i know that silva and myself have the same problems with the CAI and it would seem that its more of an issue up here in QLD as its generally bit hotter, i only have the problem when the weather starts to warm up, during the colder months it does not seem to be as much of an issue

    Corey

Second that motion my good friend :D It's a little annoying as my wife likes to reverse out of the garage and drive off straight away. <_< But once the temp gauge moves off the bottom it's all good! :D

    Haha!

My wife tried to drive the car out of the driveway and start up the hill while I was out on he weekend... She embarassed herself majorly infront of the neighbours!

She didn't admit it to me... the neighbour told me 1st!

    Chris

  13. Thanks for that guys!

I was worried that I did something wrong with cai install.

Corey... u r right. It is more of a problem in warm weather.

  14. i found that the throttle behaved a bit strange when the CAI was still hissing from the cold-idle. doesn't respond well to light throttle inputs.

    is that what u meant?

Yeah... it just doesn't want to accelerate away no matter what the throttle position. Need to get foot of accelerator and then tickle it gently to get the revs up before trying to release clutch again. Then it goes ok. No probs with starting or idle though.

    Chris

  15. Hi Guys!

Just wondering if it is a normal side effect of CAI installation that the engine has bad pickup for about a minute after start (sportivo.) It bogs down when applying power to move off.

When warms up a little runs like a demon. Is it caused by removal of the brown sensor/solenoid that is not reistalled after oem airbox removal?

    Regards

    Chris

  16. I will keep you guys informed. I certainly will be adhering to my credo 99% speed 1% rice! ;-)

Has anyone seen the recent Best Motoring Int'l DVD with the Evo IX review. They have a Touge shootout with a C-one Celica ZZT231 (which has the TRD lsd plus has interesting commentary on it's street friendly suspension setup,) Spirits MR-S, Spoon Civic EG6 and AE86. You can buy these @ Autobarn.

  17. Hi Guys!

If I had known about this forum earlier... I may have taken a somewhat different modding path. So to briefly outline the shortcomings of the car as I saw them:

    a) ****ty er30 tires... poor grip

    B) bugger all powerdown in cornering... the inside front lit up with little provocation

    c) reluctant initial turn into corners unless brakes brushed during corner entry. Powering down would make the car run wide and see (B)

    d) scary transient response to brake application during high speed cornering (the line would tighten drastically... caught me out initially until I learnt to use it to my advantage.)

My first step was to upgrade the tires to Goodyear EAGLE F1 GS-D3 205/55zr16. They grip very well in cornering but the open diff still let me down. I finally ponied up the $$$ for the lsd together with short shifter and CAI from trd.

The lsd is a clutch type (Quaife had a helical one which may be better... but I had trouble sourcing one in Aus plus I thought staying with Toyota mechanicals was a safer bet.) The changeover took quite a few man hours and more than 2 days (bearings had heat damage and required new ones to be ordered in... likely because of all the one wheel spinning action!!! BTW I live in the country.)

The feel of the car was quite different after the lsd was installed. Powerdown into corners literally sucks the car into the corner instead of causing understeer... (unless you are really ham fisted.) Almost feels at times lie it has 4wd... reminds me now of my old Suby Outback. It cost a fistfull of cash to do... but I am very happy with the result. I really rip through the local Touge now! ;-)

I am about to install TRD Sportivo coils and struts, front strut brace, TRD rear stabiliser and CES racing catback exhaust. It will be interesting how this complements the lsd.

I am interested to hear how the guys with suspension mods and tyre mods have been able to overcome the traction problem in corners.

    Regards

    Chris
