  1. I looked at the ascent hatch and sedan. I was expecting more like VW golf quality and instead saw Daewoo quality. Went down to Mazda and every car in the lot felt better quality than the new corolla. I think if it takes number one itll be as much of a surprise as it taking it when it was towards the end of the cycle. U gotta remember this new corolla is priced against the Mazda 3 and currently Golfs are 25K drive away. But the corolla is not in the same ball park if you ask me.

  2. 18x7.5 with king springs. Never scrubbed - not even once. Even when I was moving and had the back loaded with heaps of crap. The rims were tucking but no rubbing. Offset and tyre size need to be your friend. Get it wrong and scrub time!

  3. Went and sat in the new corolla today thinking of upgrading. Thank you Toyota for making my decision easy. New one feels so cheap and plastic inside and there is just something a bout the styling. Mainly the side windows how it jumps up on the back door and the little window in front of the front door. Just looks crap. The sedan looks ok but is still cheap inside. If I didnt know I was at a Toyota dealership I would swear I was looking at a kia or proton. I'll be very surprised if it holds its sales position let alone knocks commodore off top spot. Didnt test drive it because I didnt even want to. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

  4. I have to say the sedan actually looks better than the hatch. Especially the wintow line, looks more chopped. I think ill steer clear for now and wait for a hot model.

As for ultra conservative Toyota making a 200kW version, I seriously doubt it. Altho I have heard the suspension in the Japanese "Blade" version (AWD 2.4L) has been set up for a V6 powerplant. So maybe TRD will bring out an AWD Aurion engined Corolla to take on the Golf R32. More than likely it will be a 1.8L Turbo with around 140-150kW. But why not do both like VW.

AND WHERE IS THE TWO DOOR!!! DAMN YOU TOYOTA AUS!!!

  5. That stuff is a rip off. Rust protection on cars that are galvanised now therefore wont rust anyway, Paint protection with the quality standards on cars these days is a waste. And the tinting is always overpriced from the dealer. Costs dealerships about $50 per car and they charge up to 600.

  6. Diesels always have turbos because they need to run hot. Remember old petrol cars on hot days, out of tune and under load "ping"? well thats how a diesel car runs. No spark plugs to ignite the fuel just high temperature and high compression ratios. Turbos add to compression ratio as they put more air/fuel mixture into the cylinders and also run hot. Thats why turbos are always used with diesel as it is a perfect match. They are not catagarised by insurance companies as performace cars only "low pressure turbos".

Also the reason why diesels are more fuel efficient is because instead of having to run a 12:1 air/fuel mixture they run a 20:1 or something mixture. This coupled with they fact they dont rev hard and they idle low.

As for the torque - diesel will always have more torque and less power than petrol of the same capacity turbo or not turbo. We'll use the golf as an example seeings as thats what this topic is about.

    Golf 2.0 FSI - 110kW / 200NM

    Golf 1.9 TDI - 77kW / 250NM

    Golf 2.0 TDI - 103kW / 320NM

    Golf 2.0 FSI Turbo - 147kW / 280NM

And if you think it is just VW have a look at any comparison. Holden Astra:

    Astra 1.9L Turbo Diesel - 110kW / 320NM

    Astra 2.0L Turbo Petrol - 147kW / 262NM

    Astra 2.2L N/A Petrol - 110kW / 210NM

So summing up, Diesel will always have more torque, better fuel economy, less power and less revs than a petrol equivalent and there are very few if any exceptions.

As for the comment about nissan's. I've owned a skyline GTST. You cant knock a car that will do 0-100 in 6.2 and the quarter mile in 14 flat all day every day even after thousands of kms. I ringed that car's neck every time i drove it and never had a problem. You're also talking about the company that made a factory car in 1989 that did 0-100 in 4.8 seconds (1989 Skyline GTR). A 2007 model HSV wont even go that fast. They also were the first production car to break the 8 minute barrier around the Nuhrenburg circuit (R33 Skyline GTR) and that included supercars like porsche, etc. They do still produce a 350Z which is more of a performance car than what? Do Toyota even make a sports car anymore? oh hang on - no they dont!

So in summing up that one - no nissans are not crap.

  7. I believe it is "make year" as some people will say they have a 2007 model as that is when it was imported or first registered but might have been made in 2006. The true indication of age is what year it was made. Hence why insurance companies always want to know if it is MY05, MY06, etc. Subaru was just the first people to make this a public abreviation thats why people tie it to them.

  8. I find Fifth gear to be ok. Some of the stuff they do is pretty entertaining like when they put a NOS kit hooked up to full throttle on a Mk3 Golf Diesel. It then almost outruns a Honda NSX!

Or when they try to build a budget 200mph supercar. Their insight is quite educational and their lap shootouts are ok as they sometimes use vehicles that are within reach of an average person.

Top Gear is a more entertaining show and I'd watch it if they were on the same time slot. But thanks to lifestyle +2 channel I dont have to do that :)
