  1. Hey,

Do you run diesel or petrol?

My father drives a diesel 96 model non turbo and gets about 11 litres per 100 kms and I drive a petrol 84 4 runner and get about 13.

If your idling a bit rough its probably your timing/fouled plugs or an issue with your injectors. Could also be your alternator not charging enough and voltage jumping. If you have a volt meter test your alternator and then clean up your plugs. If this doesnt help check your timing. (also check your exhaust for any holes/leaky gaskets - this will make a HUGE difference.

A lot of economy issues often come down to your driving. Not using the gears to slow down, selecting either a too high or too low gear, braking heavily and accelerating quickly will also use a lot more fuel. I assume the 350 kms is city driving? Once you have cleaned up/changed anything that needs to be changed take it for a 2-3 hour drive along a highway. Cars are like horses; they need a good run every now and then or the build up carbon and slowly choke. The long drive will get any carbon out of the exhaust system and will allow the engine to hum nicely.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete.

You should go back and reread the original post

Do you run diesel or petrol Diesels Dont use a carby

I drive a petrol 84 4 runner and get about 13 What size is your engine your 50ltrs is getting you 384 ks so is comparable to the original post but your probabaly running a 3Y or 4Y engine which is only 2ltr or 2.2 not 2.4

an issue with your injectors once again CARBY no injectors to have trouble with

Could also be your alternator not charging enough and voltage jumping. If you have a volt meter test your alternator and then clean up your plugs. If this doesnt help check your timing. (also check your exhaust for any holes/leaky gaskets - this will make a HUGE difference. This is good advice

Dont forget the 2.4 is prone to head gasket trouble Check for steam out of exhauast or water in oil.

When was the last time you rode a horse that was choking on carbon???????

How about going to a good mechanic and having the engine decoked

    Good luck Ruskki

    Please look for other advice.

  2. Hi All,

I have snow chains for my old LC80, it has 275/70R16 wheels.

My current LC200 has 285/65R17 wheels.

Can the old snow chains fit into the new 17' wheels or not?

    Thanks...

Work out the overall diameter/circumference of the tyres, that should tell you the story.

Roll lout is the biggest concern you will have, this is the distance the wheel takes to do one complete revolution.

Put a chalk mark on the tyre (I use a level across the centre of the tyre)put a coresponding mark on the ground, then roll the vehicle (or just the tyre) along until the mark on the tyre reaches the level again, then put a coresponing mark on the ground again.

Now measure the distance betweeen the two markes on the ground and that is roll out.

Now measure the length of your chains, any diference between wheel roll out and chain length will tell you if they will fit.

I would think not as you might have trouble hooking them up.

    Good luck.

  3. I have a 1999 Toyota Hilux 4x4 (LN166) in which i have just installed a Toyota 3.0D (5L) engine. Previously the car had the 2.8D (3L) engine. I did not change the gearbox. I have driven the vehicle for almost 20 000km without a major problem. I use the vehicle quite often on dirt/muddy roads, though most of the time i use the vehicle in town.

Last weekend, while I was out in the bush, i suddenly could not engage gear 5 and reverse. I stopped and looked under the car to see if there is anything i could do. I saw that 2 of the 6 bolts that mate the gearbox to the engine were missing, and one was loose. Despite this, gears 1-4 were engaging well. I found some bolts and screwed them in as a rudimentary measure just to get me to my destination about 80km away. I tried to tighten the 3rd bolt - it would screw in well, but it would not tighten.

I have spoken to my mechanic who was surprised by this. He indicated though, that it can happen, especially on older cars - gearbox bolts can work themselves loose due to metal fatigue and vibrations. He also indicated that one of the ways to rectify this is to tighten the bolts with nuts. He also visually examined the 3rd bolt that wouldnt tighten and saw that the threads were still very good indicating that maybe the threads on the gearbox or engine are the ones that are worn.

He also removed the gear sticks and cover to test the selectors and they appeared to be ok indicating that the gearbox has an internal problem.

    I thus have 2 questions:

    1. Is it really true that bolts can work themselves loose to the point of falling off?

    2. What would cause the gearbox to suddenly fail to engage gear 5 and reverse? (we havent opened the gearbox yet - am a little short of cash...)

Any help that i can will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Lemmyb

    1. Yep, happens ALL the time. You should use Loctite if the bolts aren't coming off in a hurry, or a spring washer if they will be removed.

    2. Can be a variety of things, does it actually want to go in gear (but act like it's in neutral) or are you just not able to push the selector into those positions?

    1. what he said

    2. sounds like the rod holding those two gears has slipped, 5th and reverse are on the same set so with both being gone it stands to reason.

Its a ten year old vehicle, it might be easyer to find a replacement gear box, should be a few around now.

  4. Hi i have just bought a surf but the speakers that were in it were stuffed i bought new speakers and noticed the wiring was all wrong the front and back and left and right were all wrong ( top job previous owner!! ) e.g if i have it so just the back speakers should work the back right and front left work and if it have so the front speakers should only be working the back left and front right speakers work i can deal with that. But what is annoying me is the back left speaker when turned up louder bottoms out and crackles while the back right speaker can be cranked right up and works fine??? i thought it may have been the speaker so i swaped them over but still the same i even tried the speakers out of my commodore with the same result what can i do with out taking the dash apart to get to the stereo? And also another dumb question why is there 4 wires where the speakers fit?

wow sounds to me you got a great jumbled hook up under the dash and thats where I would start with fixing the mixed up speaker positions.

As for the bottom out it sounds to me like it could be one of two problems - 1 you may have a short in the wire or 2 it may be that the speaker is wired in the wrong polarity, which by the sound of the others being all over the shot is more than likely.

    Good luck.

  5. The last time I had a problem like this it was a small branch jammed the actuator, roll underneath and have a look around.

You could be experiencing dif wind up, which is puting reverse pressure on the gears.

To fix, try hitting the button to deactivate 4wd and then hook reverse gear and go backwards a few metres, or you could spin the wheels a bit, but thaats not as easy on tarmac.

  6. Hi. Having some trouble fitting the fog lights from my 2001 Land Cruiser 50th anniversary model to a smat bar (plastic bull bar), the bar has the cut outs for the lights but no brackets. Are brackets available? or do we tech screw them to the bar? (ha ha no)

    Ha Ha YES

Maybe you could try calling a dealer, they would be able to tell you where to get the right type of Tech screw.
