  1. Hi guys,

New to this site; got my 2010 Facelift KX-S last month.

    KX-S 2WD Facelift

    • Nudge Bar
    • Side Steps
    • Front sensor
    • Rear sensor
    • Tinted windows
    • Tow bar
    • Cargo mat
    • Metallic Paint

    $52,350

Also traded in my 2004 Corolla TTR for a Yaris YR which will happen on Wednesday...

    Cheers

Not sure how I went. Purchased an altitude,2010model, in November for $52,000. preferred the old shape & other things like normal keys, no leather seats, no "woodgrain" trim etc.

Altitude has roof rails, fog lights, moonroof, towbar, paint, fabric protection, tinted windows & video player. What do you guys think.

After driving it for a couple of months I think it is junk, but what do you think of the price?

  2. I recently did trip Melb to Sydney towing a rental tandem car trailer with an old Kombi on the trailer. The first 1/3 of the trip I was getting 22l/100km. Then a tyre blew out on the trailer. After changing the tyre, I pulled into the next servo to check all the trailers tyre pressures. I had 45 psi on the left side of the trailer, and 15 psi on the right side. So I pumped the right side upto 45 psi. I then got 16l/100 for the rest of the trip to Sydney, and the same on the return run with another Kombi on the back until Wangaratta. From there I had an empty trailer, and I was getting 12.5l/100km.

It pays to check tyre pressures. I didn't realize it would make that much of a difference.

    I was right! I got a dud.

Even taking it easy on trips (I live in coffs Harbour. so anything out of the suburb is highway)the best it ever does is over 14.

It was so frustrating ,& distracting, watching that screen & trying to keep the economy down just to try & prove it could be done like other posts in this forum, I gave up.

Don't use the fuel screen much anymore, as I said, I got a dud.

  3. I have just taken my 2011 Grande on a dash from Sydnee to GC. I have noticed there seems to be a difference in the cruise control from my previous car. With the control engadged at around 100kph when you use the the control to touch up the speed it seems that the gearbox kicks itself down two gears and the motor seems to work quite hard to increase speed.

So my question is can the gearbox changing control be remapped to inhibit the harshness of the changedown. I have had them look at the box at the 1000 confidence look at as it was having trouble changing up. They fixed that.

Otherwise great cruise on the Pacific highway very smooth.

I hate using the cruise anywhere too hilly, as it is very aggressive in kicking down if any speed is lost on hills. Sorta catches you out a bit when the car is new to you. I'd say this is a

combination of weight of the vehicle , and a slight lack of torque in a vehicle this heavy. As good as this motor is, it is dealing with a fair bit of weight. As normally cruising is so quiet,

refined, and fuss free, it is a little shock at first how aggressive the cruise is when dealing with hills.

Every kluger I have driven works the same way like this with cruise. Bring on a torquey turbo diesel motor in the next model to match/beat the upcoming Territory's!!! Imagine a twin turbo diesel

with around 200kw, 550nm of torque, and sub 10 fuel economy. Check out what some other companies are doing with modern diesel's if your think it impossible!!!

Done my time with turbo diesels, that's why I ended up with the Kluger.

    The gearbox............what a piece.

Drove it to Sydney (from Coffs) over Christmas. Went stupid whenever there was a hill, suddenly dropping down two gears & screaming the engine to try & make up 3 or 4 kph.

If resume was selected after going through a 60km town, it would work its way up to about 85kmh in 4th then suddenly jump back to 2nd & scream it's head off till it got back to 100kph.

I agree it sounds like a lack of torque, but why would it be happy in 4th until nearly 90 then suddenly go mad?

I tried this all the way down & it did the same thing.

Started using the cruise on the way back, but gave it away before Berowra.

Even without the cruise on it still seems lost for gears & doesn't seem happy, always up & down even on relatively straight stretches.

    Not really impresssed at all.

  4. Welcome to the club mate,

The good thing is that the car will come with a free 1000 km free service, so within the first month or so just make a list of any issues (i.e noises, brakes, aircon leaking in passager side, etc)

Make sure they show you how to use some of the features. e.g. cruise control, climate control air con,etc....

Don't think service is the right word.

Unless you have a complaint as you suggest, you will only be halfway through their plastic cup of coffee when they say it's ready. Think they just make sure it still has 4 wheels & can drive through their workshop ok to get it out of the way.

  5. Hi All,

Only time my economy goes above 13 l/100km is when just doing kid drop off and pick up and even then normally only gets up to max of 13.5l/100km. Most of the time economy is between 11 l/100km and 13 l/100km even when driven hard and this is suburban driving. When on trips it drops under 10 l/100km.

As for WOW factor, my Kluger can keep up with most cars when accelerating (except sportscars) and handles well enough to give me plenty of confidence on twisty roads. I have a KXR AWD.

    Have a Merry Christmas everyone.

    Regards,

    Snowy68

Oh well, guess I got a dud.

Matty, when you learn to read I will reply.

  6. I too have a VW....T5 Crewvan, 1.9 TDI. Yes, its great on fuel economy. I average 6.5l/100km. But the service costs at VW are a killer. Whether my dealer was shafting me or not, but I have never had a service bill less than $500. Multiply that by another 2 VW's and an Audi in my stable......I wanted something cheaper to get serviced, with a bit of power to be able to tow a large trailer.

Granted for the sevice costs, but they appear to be a diesel thing- mates last triton service was $850.

Unfortunatly for me the Multivan towed better than the Kluger. 18'fibreglass runabout with 115 outboard.

But it doen't matter what it is we all find fault & it's only after you live with something for a while that the flaws show up.

  7. Ha, my fault for not qualifying, but I was talking about a multivan aka kombi so you can assume and roll your eyes till they fall out.

It is a much better drive than the Kluger & in all the other respects I mentioned.

You **** me so much I will do it for you:

Quoted fuel economy is crap, but we'll go with it:

    11/lt/100km=25mpg

    Real usage of consistent 14/lt/100km=20mpg

Either way it doesn't equate to 30 years of progress & a motor that no mechanic can service/repair without a computer calling the shots.

Not saying the VW is any joy for a mechanic, but the l/100km or mpg comparison of 30 yrs still stands.

They should all be doing 5l/100 for all the crap under the bonnet & increased cost of maintenaince.

  8. Pros compared to VW it replaced:

    Doen't have windscreen sensing wipers

Cons compared to VW it relaced:

It drives like a car, no more no less, no "WOW this is great to drive"

Eats fuel as well than an old V8 of 30 yrs ago.

Middle rear seat may as well of been made of wood or forgotten altogether & something innovative been installed.

Stereo/bluetooth would have been great on a V8 30 yrs ago.

Tyres for VW finally found for @$250, sounds like I'll be lucky to do this on a "Toyota?".

Dozens of tiny touches not noticed on a test drive that are still not included/approached /thought of that are not present compared to the 5yr old VW.

My mistake & I have to live with it, but it really is just a car. If it was cheap, then I would be ok. But it wasn't so it's not. If anyone asks me what I think on the street, I won't hesitate to tell them.

Kluger is pretty cheap compared to $80,000 for a V6 Toureg

I assume that is why you didn't go for another VW in the first place?

I agree that the Kluger is not perfect but to write it off because the replacement tyres are expensive, one of the 7 seats is small and the Stereo isn't great seems rather petty.

Quoted fuel economy for the Kluger (11.0) is considerably less than a V6 Toureg (13.6) let alone a 30 Year old V8, so that claim is just plain rubbish....

  10. I'm new to this forum having previously had a range of Ford performance cars (and still do), but now the owner of a new Kluger 2011 update model GRANDE.

I am having trouble finding information on the forums on modifications/improvements for the Klugger etc…. I have been a significant contributor for a couple of the ford forums but cant seem to locate the info here.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Open to any improvements such as cold air intakes, extractors, exhausts, suspension modifications, , wheels, AV items etc…

  12. Been considering all weekend about selling the Kluger to get a V10 twin turbo 5lt diesel TDI VW........ read a million reviews, stories of blow up of turbo's on VW's, horrendous resale value, worse fuel consumption than what I have documented for my Kluger (+ more expensive fuel) stupid service costs!!!! and much worse acceleration compared to ALL of the tests I have carried out over time. Went for a drive today and my beast and it just accelerates like an animal!, thought to myself "why the fark would I want to spend double on a S/H **** box VW".

So shelved the idea. Though I still love the engine in the VW though lol, 100% more capable off-road but I don't do any of that now anyway so not a big selling point. The complexity flat out scares me too.

Been reading this thread with interest as my car is now 1 week old & this can be called your thread and you have been so enthusiastic.

Shocked to see your change of heart in just one post, but no comment on this.

I realiase it has been a while, but was wondering how you got on?

My 2 bob on the Volkswagen:

2005 4 motion multivan from new (I know it's not a Toureg, but may be helpful.

Best thing we had ever bought, heaps of room, heaps of power, towed the boat 7 people & all there gear without a drama, unbelievably good on fuel.

Niggling things during warranty period, always fixed, no problem, no arguments.

2 months after 3 yr warranty the gearbox blew. Repaired by VW at a cost of about $8000 much to their credit.

    Since Jan this year:

    Rear sliding windows fall out

Sliding doors get stuck on both sides

Front electric window motors & switches replaced, $800 each

    Air con not working $4,000

Some cloth & trims just starting to fall off.

The main driver, who really loved it, started to get nervous and so did I & sick of taking it in every month to get fixed.

Happened to be in Newcastle last week & heard on the radio Toyota was having a 4 day sale.

Traded the VW on the Kluger then drove the VW home to Coffs Harbour while the paperwork was done.

On the Tuesday on the way back for the trade the VW spat a turbo at Port Macquarie requiring me to take it out of the trade & left with a $6,000 quote to fix.

    My summary:

Excellent car re build, finish, equipment (still has standard features that Toyota don't offer 5 yrs later), drive etc.

Excellent after sales & support from VW.

Started to self distruct after 4yrs. Expected more from a $70,000 vehicle as I looked at Kia at the same time but at half the price figured it wasn't made to last.

VW has done 170,000 km, always serviced by VW, never missed a service (can't as the reminder is so annoying).

If you buy one do so on the 3yr then upgrade plan.

Hope this helps, am expecting more from the Kluger.
