Don't touch it. But having said that I still have mine. The dealers are lying. Don't trust them. They know fully well the issue. But my consumption is manageable. To add salt in the wound mine developed a blown head gasket. That was a drama in itself.

hello talbit, thank you for responding!

test drove one today, and i must say - i like it very much! does not need hard revving to get it going, unlike the petrol, so suits my driving style!

other than not wanting to lose too much in depreciation and not wanting to pass on the problem - any other reason/s for why you have chosen to hang on to it?

if i can get one at a good price, am wondering if i should just accept the oil consumption as part of the deal. other than the oil drinking, which can't be determined from a test drive, even over several days unless it is seriously bad, it is actually a very nice car!

was the blown head gasket related to the oil consumption?

Further. If you look back in the posts you will see a link to the issue with the blown head gasket. Again the dealers say they are unaware of this issue. The later models might have been ok but the reason they don't make this diesel any more is because the engine is a lemon and they know it. Don't listen to the salesman. Talk to the service manager. If he says he's never heard of the oil problem then walk out and don't go back !!! I could go on but all I can say is buyer be aware.

Because of my circumstances with the head gasket problem I now have two rav4. The second one is a Dec 2018 petrol purchased new last june. Last of the petro lls before the hybrids. Very nice.

    Good luck. Talbit

i did a quick look-back and saw a few mentions of head gasket replacement as part of the rebuild, but could not find any link to problems specific to the head gasket.

so you bought a new rav4 but kept the old diesel one as well?

the new 2019 line-up still has petrol-only models - a 2 litre and 2.5 litre, in addition to the 2.5 litre hybrid. no more rav4 diesels, which i personally feel is a pity. anyhow, was not prepared to cough up the more than $40k needed to buy the new rav4s.

I didn't know they continued with the diesels into 2018. The new engine you mentioned might be ok especially that there have been no comments on this forum. But the 2AD-FTV certainly has the oil  consumption issue. My salesman said they don't do the diesels anymore because they weren't popular which is rubbish. The reason was is because it's a lemon.

    Talbit

the 2ad-ftv was used from 2013 to 2015. the 2ad-fhv from 2016 to 2018. i have come across only 1 example of a 2018 diesel in the melbourne area - most of the late rav4 diesels seem to be in the less populated states like western australia and south australia, and in regional areas.

in my search for a rav4 so far, i am finding the petrol models far more common - i'd estimate about 10 petrol for every 1 diesel, so good diesel examples are hard to find. i'd look at the prados, but don't need that size of car and don't want to be lugging all of that heft around for no good reason. also, good used examples of prados are upwards of $40k, which is a lot to pay for something i do not need.

would be nice to have a good solution to this oil drinking problem - my decision-making would be far easier.

  2. hi all,

am looking at buying a late 2013 toyota rav4 diesel, with the 2ad-ftv engine.

i had come across this forum discussion thread earlier, so have been asking all of the dealers i have been visiting to look at cars about the diesel oil consumption problem.

some are telling me they have not come across any reports of such a problem (possible, as the petrol versions are far more common), while others say changing the oil used to one with a different specification addresses the issue.

based on what i am reading in this discussion thread, appears they have not yet got a good solution that fully addresses the issue? should i believe what some of the dealers are saying - that a change of oil type to one with a different specification fully addresses the issue?

would prefer the diesel for the torque and efficiency (km/litre), but would not want to be saddled with an annoying, irritating problem.

the late diesel models (2016, 2017, 2018) with the 2ad-fhv engine cost more than what i am willing to pay currently, so am left to consider the earlier models.
