  1. 611km on 45L from a 60L tank. That was freeway driving, from the Snowy to Sydney. That's about 7.4L/100km and I would have made over 800km on the full tank at that rate. Not bad for a 14yo Celica with 400,000km on the clock. Country driving can get you some phenomenal mileage!

Edit: I just realised this is about sportivos, so maybe my info is irrelevant, I just looked up 'view new posts'

  2. What's your location? In Sydney there's a place in Villawood, on River Drive near the Woodville Rd ramp that fits import Jap engines with low kms. I know they'll do a 6th gen so assume they can source a 7th gen as well. I was quoted $2,500 for a new engine including installation. (Oddly enough a recondition of the existing engine also costs $2,500.)

  3. It's well over a month since I saw it, so I doubt it's still there. Thanks to the wisdom of this forum I now know better and I hope to get a nice ma70 or jza70, maybe a celica gt4 ... a guy around the corner wants to sell his gt4 but it has a shocking paintjob on it .... mind you I saw a very pretty looking mr2 the other day, anyone know much about them? I know it's a mid-engine thingy but not a lot more.

    Cheers.

Hi Jack, a good celica GT4 is an awesome car. I wouldnt mind one myself. MR2 is certainly a worthy car to consider. The SW20 or Mk2 model would be the one to look at. Only NA versions were sold through Aus toyota dealers. Toyota japan produced turbo versions so you would have to find a private import if you want turbo. A buddy of mine had a turbo MR2 & I found it went surprisingly well. The NA engine was the 3SFE & the turbo engine was 3SGTE. Be aware the MR2 is purely a 2 seater.

    Hi hotsup,

Yes a GT4 is what I ideally want, if I can't afford a Supra. I'd like to put a 5SFTE in my ST204 but my skillZ aren't up to that and won't be for some time so buying one is my only option. But things are tight all round as you all know. For now I'm just going to get my ride in decent shape and see what happens.

The MR2 looks very good, and yeah you only need to look at it to know the back seat isn't worth sh*t :) I'll look up pricing on them or look in the caryards and see if anyone has or can get them.

Thanks again, I love the picking of brains you can get here :D

    Cheers,

    Jack

  4. It is a 6, just a small 6. Its actually the same block as the IS200, 1G just not the FE, but a GTTE. I think 7k is very expensive, id offer 3k, then spend teh rest on a conversion, or as others have said get a JZA70 with the mighty 1JZGTE, or the MA70 Turbo-A which has a modified 7MGTE from factory. Very nice looking cars. The GA IIR is only the slim body, not the wide body like teh otehrs.

And im pretty sure the Gearbox in the GA is NOT an R154, but a W series.

  5. GA70!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!

GA's were purely for the Japanese market only when they were released & should have stayed there. They're a bit of a joke really. What were Toyota thinking??? Get a JZA70 or MA70

That's what I thought it WAS until the importer told me.

I'd looked up these cars when I got there, so I walked up to it and said 'That's a MA70 or a JZA70 innit?" he said no, it's a GA70 ... then he opened the hood and I looked and said hang on, how big is the engine? He said 2L but a six and that's when I got sus and asked the forum, as above.

    So thanks guys. :)

  7. Oh sorry, just realised I didnt give much good advice except stay away from the GA70 lolz.

In order or preference and superiority,

JZA70 would be the most favourable, then the MA70 with the 7M-GTE, then the GA70. (Also personally I would also prefer the MA70 non turbo over a GA70)

JZA70's are also a JDM item, although due to increasing petrol prices and new P plate laws the price has plummeted. You can now pick one up from $9000-$12,000 pending condition.

The potential of this car is crazy. Unfortunately I can't say that I've tested it's potential or speak from personal experience, but others have claimed to be able to make 450rwkw on an unopened engine. A friend with the JZZ30 Soarer, is making 280rwkw on his 1JZ-GTE.

Also in case you don't know the JZA80 Supras use the 2JZ-GTE which kinda shows which engine prevailed lolz.

MA70's were available locally, though some floating around were still imported. The 7M-GTE is infamous for its BHG problems. Although some see potential in this engine after installing MHG with aftermarket head studs/bolts. Being a 3.0i its got more torque than the 1JZ's 2.5i, but its potential on an unopened engine falls short to the 1JZ. You can pick them up for under $10k

GA70's being a 2.0i just doesn't pull it's weight. The Supra was grouped as a sports/tourer, kinda comfy but still a sports car. The car is reallly heavy.... If you have the full electric seat that byitself is 50kg, even just the seat equipped with lumber support weighs enough. So smaller engine with less torque pulling more extras doesn't work out better. People have successfully done up this car with decent results but in terms of value for money... GA70 = FTL I would pay $6k MAX! on a 1G

As you can see I am abit biased toward the JZA70. I currently own a MA70 which I plan on putting a 1JZ-GTE into lolz.

cbf adding more but feel free to ask more questions, and i'll try my best to answer. and sorry if im treating you like a noob it's unintentional

It's ok to treat me like a n00b, I am one- I only really got interested in cars when I bought a 95 Celica last year. Thanks for the info.

When the dealer told me the GA70 was a 2L engine I was sorta surprised, and thinking about it pulling a tonne and a half doesn't make a lot of sense. I was looking at it cos it's an import with low kms, less than 100k iirc, and I thought it was a good price. It does have electric drivers seat etc.

I have an ST204R, but it had 365kms when I bought it and 380+ now. I've already spent a fair bit fixing stuff such as broken selector cable and the 5SFE is not everything a sports car engine should be, and I'm wondering what to do now - get another car (likely a Toyota), fix this one up, put a turbo into it ... If I was to get another car I'd ideally like a GT4 or a good Supra.

    Again, thanks for the reply.

    Jack

  8. drop a gen3 3sgte into ur celica heheh, itll be quicker than the options above... traction permitting hahahah

And while you're at it join up to Ozcelica.com too....

Yesss NGHTKD I think we got him... one person at a time, we'll convert them all!!

Yes you got me, I subscribed to it.

    SO.

I have a mate who can get my 95 Celica up to spec and I can sell it for what I spent (more if I'm lucky).

So you think the GA70 is no good? I was surprised when the dealer told me it was a 2L, I expected it was like a 3L export. I do want something with some weight in the back, that won't spin out or fish-tail from the front on a wet morning. I want a heavier rear-wheel drive machine, like a Supra. Sorry Celica fans.

When I went to the Japanese Import Engine shop at Villawood they said they wouldn't drop a 3s-gte into my car, because it's a different drivetrain etc. They'll put in a new (recon jap?) engine or recondition what I have for $2,500. Can I really put a 3s-gte into my car? It has, I notice, the 'well' for a rear drivetrain, as do all the Celicas I've seen. Do they need to make it 4wd?

Please tell me guys what I can do.

    Cheers,

    Jack

  9. Hi guys.

I'm looking at an 89 MkIII GA70. Here's what I've found out about it so far:

    Supra MkIII

    GA70 (JDM)

    1G-GTE16

    2L straight 6 twin turbo

    R154 transmisiion

    210 hp (157k/w)

It's going for $7,700. Is that good? Is there anything I should be looking out for? It's getting a new battery, fuel pump and rims. I should be driving it this weekend.

Any comments and help would be much appreciated. (See my post in the Celica forum - "95 Celica going - what to do?" for some background.)

    Cheers,

    Jack

  10. Anyone? Come on please, I'm counting on you guys!

The Supra is still looking good though I haven't driven it yet, it's needed some work. 1989 GA70, JDM 2L twin turbo (not 3L), going for $7,700. What do you guys reckon?

    Any comments much appreciated.

  11. Ok guys, here's the deal.

Last year I got a beautifful emerald pearl green ST204R. It had 365K on the clock so I got a good price. Six months later the selector cable broke, no warranty. $1000 all up to get the part imported and fitted, you know how hard it is to find parts for this car. There's a hole in the nose from a Camry muffler, and now it's mistiming and something else is up with the clutch, no idea what. It prolly needs $500-1000 of work to get it back in something like prime condition.

So what do you think my options are? I'm looking at a nice mk3 Supra next weekend - very similar body to the ST184 but a 3L twin turbo ... I'm also thinking of an FTO or a Nissan 180SX but the Supra is the most affordable. Any other options you guys can think of? I'm pretty much a car newby and I'm no mechanic though I'm willing to learn. Engine swap? I don't like the 5SFE a lot, it's great compared to many cars but not for a Celica as you all know ... Recondition? Fix it? Recommends on a new ride?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated. BTW there's prolly a 95 Celica for sale here ... :)

    Thanks in advance,

    Jack M

  12. Hi all,

I just bought a 1995 white celica and am looking for a few parts.

    RHS front guard,

    LHS tail light,

    boot struts,

parcel shelf (the panel that lifts together with tailgate when openning the boot)

various piece of plastic pannels inside the boot

it will be greatly appreciated if anyone can help out here.

I am in Sydney but happy to have them posted to me since they are so scarce.

    thanks

    BBS7664

I have a 95 Celica I'm looking to sell whole. It's driveable but needs some work (hole in the nose from a camry muffler, mistimimg and something is up with the clutch ...) maybe $500-1000 worth all up.

If this is any use get in touch.

    Jack

  13. I agree, I thought the 182's were convertibles, 184's standard, and 185's Turbo 4WD :spiteful:

ST182 = 3S, either FE or GE. Weren't sold here, are all imports

    ST184 = 5SFE Camry boat-anchor, were sold here

ST185 = 3SGTE GTFOUR, sold here but in limited numbers I believe

Pretty sure both the 182 and 184 could be had in convertible form, but no convertible was sold on the Australian market.

I got my first Celica last year, an ST204 with the same 5SFE as the ST184, it makes me very sad to hear it called a camry boat-anchor, but since I got it I have realised it is true. I only managed to redline it for the first time ever last week.

I swear my next Celica will be a GT4, but the only one I've come close to so far was a half-cut at a Jap car parts place in Lansvale.

  14. My last car was a 93 Lancer, lowered and wide wheels. Currently I've got a 95 Celica with the same engine as yours -5SFE- and I know which one I'd pick. Lancers aren't much, a Celica handles way better and has more power.

  15. I bought a 95 Celica SX ST204R last year with lots of kms on the clock, no warranty and wouldn't you know the left selector cable pretty much broke around xmas time. I spent ages looking at wreckers and private ads for wrecking or parts before giving up and ordering the part from Japan for a small fortune.

I don't understand why it was so hard - well impossible really - to find used parts for this model. You see dozens of them on the streets. But anyway, I wondered if anyone here knows where to find parts for this model, I'd still be interested in more stuff, like clutch plates, gearbox, anything really.

I do love my Celica, I've always loved them and it was a dream come true to finally get one. Hopefully she'll be back on the road within the month so I can tear up the road around Livo some more ;)
