as the description says, when you try to start it, it turns over but doesnt ignite.

went down to the local toyota mechanic who wasnt entirely helpful, but pretty much said its either the fuel pump, the distributor & coils, or the ignition module.

so far have ruled out the fuel pump, disconnected the line, tried to turn over and its still pumps through.

mate around the corner whos a mechanic currently has it, and is trying to be certain about it being the dizzy before ordering a new one, and reckons the module and coils almost never give out

dizzy appears to be leaking oil (searched the forums and found similar problems relating to seals, although none of them mentioned it causing ignition problems)

so i figured some of the guys (& gals) on here might have encountered similar problems, and have a solution to my problem

any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, can attach photos upon request

hey mine's an 89 st162 and i'm having the same problems only we know its not the dizzy. originally my bf traced it back to the ignition coil, but then another mechanic said its actually the ignition module... please help, here's the situation:

went to start it and it died, went to start it again and it died, then it just wouldn't start at all. realised it was because of the fuel pump so found the relay and the part joing the wire to the relay had melted. my bf bought a new bit and put it back together (p.s. he said it sparked) so now the fuel pump was working but this time no spark. (and we know for a fact there was spark before fixing relay part). we tried cleaning the dizzy and that was pretty much brand new. so now its down to ignition coil/module or something to do with the alarm system. however it has a microtech computer (car has been turbo'd) and apparently (i don't know for sure off hand) the computer is not turning on at all, and if it were something to do with the coil or module the computer should still turn on or light up (again i don't know if this is correct).

please any advice i can't afford to take it in to a workshop, my bf is a mechanic and he is trying but its so hard to know for sure. and so far i have spent 300 bucks on parts that have been the wrong ones and non refundable... i'm desperate coz i only bought the car 2 weeks ago and it was fine for about a week. the guy who i bought it off said he is on holiday but if it still isnt started when he gets back he will come help us... but thats still a few weeks away :(

You can determine whether the no spark condition is due to the coil by measuring its resistance with an ohmmeter.

+ to - (cold): 0.38-0.46 ohms

+ to high tension (cold): 7.7 - 10.4 k.ohms

These values are for the 3s-fe engine (3s-ge are slightly different). If the resistance is outside these values, replace the coil.

If the coil is fine, the problem will then be either the battery (easy to check with a voltmeter), the igniter (I don't know how to check this) or the ECU (I'm completely unfamiliar with these, much less aftermarket computers). It might also be a blown EFI fuse.

You are correct to say that a blown coil or igniter will not result in the computer malfunctioning.

Good luck! That's about all I can offer you.
