okay.. so lets say its getting done by a mechanic.

is there ECU issues for the turbo, or anything else i need to worry about? or is it a simple swap considering?

or would it be better to get a newer 3S-GE?

do they fit in an '86 SX?

you will need to swap the motor, wiring loom, etc... you cant use the 3SGE wiring or ECU on the GTE...

this can be reltively easy, provided you have the correct engine package. dont even think about doing it with just a handful of un-connected bits. I've done a few. typical issues....

Gen 1, 3SGTE's are typically rooted, so avoid these.

Gen 2, ex GT4, has lots of minor differences to Gen 1, but provided you get a whole package, then it will go in OK. bonnet vent needed to keep stock IC

Gen 3, ex 205, can be very difficult to fit as there are so many small changes, electrics are a serious hassle to integrate

in all cases, when fitting into a SX, you have these issues...

have to swap to E code box with special axles.

SX crossmember does not fit/clear the big box

gear shifter cables needed to match gearbox

air-con lines dont mate up and custom ones needed

radiator fan usually gets tangled up

air filter inlet does not line up unless battery is moved to boot
