  1. Hi guys, I am looking for a downloadable service/repair manual or schematics for the Toyota A240L automatic gearbox. (This gearbox is in the Corolla AE110 with the 4A-FE and 5A-FE engines). I have looked everywhere on the internet but have not been able to find it. If there is anybody with a link (even a torrent download) please please post it here or pm it to me. Any help or leads will be greatly appreciated. (My friend's old mom has an AE110 and there is a nasty whining noise coming from the gearbox. Replacing it with a used unit here in Zimbabwe will cost +-US$1000 and this is simply not worth it. I would like to give the manual to my mechanic before he opens it, just in case) Regards Lemmyb
  2. Thanks guys. We are thinking of replacing the gearbox with a good used unit, then dismantle the old gearbox just to check out what went wrong. If its fixable, we'll fix it and resell it -Lemmyb
  3. Hi, I was working with a friend on the above 2005 Hilux double cab 4x4 vehicle and he tells me that on these vehicles, the diff oil has to be changed every 20 000km (12 000miles). Is this true? To me, that is a bit too frequent as most cars (as far as i know) have diff oil changes at intervals above 50 000km. My friend tells me that he got this info from a Toyota dealership..... Regards Lemmyb
  4. Thanks guys. I got confirmation from Toyota Gibraltar that its ABS sensors are also speed sensors. So i have to replace all 4 sensors for +/-US$480 before shipping. That is steep!! Lemmyb
  5. I have a 1999 Toyota Hilux 4x4 (LN166) in which i have just installed a Toyota 3.0D (5L) engine. Previously the car had the 2.8D (3L) engine. I did not change the gearbox. I have driven the vehicle for almost 20 000km without a major problem. I use the vehicle quite often on dirt/muddy roads, though most of the time i use the vehicle in town. Last weekend, while I was out in the bush, i suddenly could not engage gear 5 and reverse. I stopped and looked under the car to see if there is anything i could do. I saw that 2 of the 6 bolts that mate the gearbox to the engine were missing, and one was loose. Despite this, gears 1-4 were engaging well. I found some bolts and screwed them in as a rudimentary measure just to get me to my destination about 80km away. I tried to tighten the 3rd bolt - it would screw in well, but it would not tighten. I have spoken to my mechanic who was surprised by this. He indicated though, that it can happen, especially on older cars - gearbox bolts can work themselves loose due to metal fatigue and vibrations. He also indicated that one of the ways to rectify this is to tighten the bolts with nuts. He also visually examined the 3rd bolt that wouldnt tighten and saw that the threads were still very good indicating that maybe the threads on the gearbox or engine are the ones that are worn. He also removed the gear sticks and cover to test the selectors and they appeared to be ok indicating that the gearbox has an internal problem. I thus have 2 questions: 1. Is it really true that bolts can work themselves loose to the point of falling off? 2. What would cause the gearbox to suddenly fail to engage gear 5 and reverse? (we havent opened the gearbox yet - am a little short of cash...) Any help that i can will be greatly appreciated. Regards Lemmyb
  6. Hi guys, I have a 1999 Toyota Camry that was imported from Japan 2 years ago. (Engine 4S-FE, manual transmission). The speedometer and odometer suddenly stopped working. I sent the vehicle for diagnostics and it read "speed sensor error". I thought the speedo sensor would be on the gearbox, but it is not there. Instead, the hole where the speedo would ordinarily be is sealed by a plug. I got our mechanic to look for it but there is no other sensor anywhere on the gearbox. We checked all fuses, and they appear to be fine, none is blown. My question is, where else does Toyota put the speed sensor? And what else would cause this problem? Regards Lemmyb Harare, Zimbabwe
