  1. Hi,

Our LC200 series has developed a tapping noise at a set rev range of around 1500 revs under slight load at low speed. We tow a big caravan and the noise goes away at normal revs. We service the vehicle by the book, we have used Wynns products for fuel every 5000k which does make the vehicle run smoother in general. There is no unusual lack of power or other issues. We tend to be gentle drivers and do not "flog" the motor at all.

It has about 80,000 K on the odo.

    Any thoughts would be welcome.

    M&M

Hi is it diesel or petrol ? if diesel its very possibly just normal diesel noise if petrol get it looked at asap best i can reccomend without all the details

  2. Hi all,

This Thursday I finaly get to pick up my brand new GXL Landcruiser 200. Now I maybe over cautious but is there any recomendations about running these in? I will of course ask the dealer on pick up what their recomendations are but I was hoping for some prior knowledge before pick up as most dealers these day say that running in is not needed. I beg to differ though.

    Thoughts?

Do not pussy foot around in it you will glaze the cyliners drive it quite hard under load etc and you will have a good motor

  3. I work for SWEPCO Australia and we sell 'high performance' lubricants that the average motorist will not come across unless they drive a Mack Truck or a High Performance Racing Car! I am not trying to sell my product here but I could not keep silent after having this same discussion with one of my best customers that runs a trucking and logistics company. He runs our lubricants in his trucks & trailers etc. He has just bought a V8 Turbo Diesel GXL Wagon and noticed the unusual oil consumption after just a few thousand km. And as I'm reading... no joy with the Toyota Dealer either. Everytime I visit to drop off lubricant for his trucking business I'm hearing him tell me the same story, to the point that he is carrying around 5lts of oil in the back of the wagon! I suggested that he try topping up SWEPCO 306 Supreme Formula Engine Oil and he's had some success... he's using less and less as more and more 306 goes in  ... cheaper oils (even OEM spec'd oil) were evaporating / vapourising because the V8 Turbo Diesel engine runs hot.

    My link

But it is an oil quality problem as other people have already identified. If I can help anyone or if anyone wants to check the product out i.e. Tech Data Sheets etc, I'm happy to be contacted.

Its looking like an oil quality problem as opposed to an engine problem have several friends who now run http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/motor-oil/hpr/hpr_diesel_15 and so far all 3 after 10,000 have used under 3mm on the dip stick :) im changing over to this next service too hopefully ill be #4 of us not using oil will know soon enough :)

  4. Just had a service done on the 2010 v8 diesel 20,000klms and noticed that the sump is over filled by about 5ml....is this their remedy for the oil consumption problem.

Hi mine has been overfilled by 10 to 15 mm at times its just their way of covering up the issue or total incompetence by the mechanic by overfilling it.

I suspect the former and its a cover up tactic but its a well known problem by almost all TTD owners.

But i still believe that Toyota will remedy all the effected vehicles in their own time :( only problem is a lot of other ppl are hearing about this and i cop a lot of flack about the 200 being an oil burner and not the diesel oil .

Ive coped the snide remark of have you filled the oil and topped your diesel up lately :( mainly pootrol owners of course :( :spiteful: obviously after spending 130k so far on my Sahara with accessories it does hurt a bit but i like the car its great so ill just block the snide remarks out the best i can . :whistling:

  5. G,Day Phil

    yes i tow 3t and over average 17 to 18 l/100k on highway 110kph

no van i can get down to 7.8l /100k on highway using cruise control driving myself 8 to 9 l/100k

around town 11 to 12 l/100k driving quietly using the loud pedal 14 to 15 l/100k

all figures are as reported via the Sahara dash have checked it against liters filled by k,s done and its within .2 of a liter /100k

  6. I also had the loss of power while towing the van sat on side of road me the wife and all 6 kids 40 deg heat my 200TTD Sahara broken down yet again all dash lights lit 1 hour later it finaly fired up backtracked to nearest Toyota dealer in limp mode.

Codes cleared on my way not impressed with oil usage either  on oil watch what a joke  my 100 series has never let me down ever in 170,000k never used a drop of oil either so far 4 holidays 3 the 200 has failed the 100 series over 20 van trips flawless perfect reliable still have it :yahoo: .

with the extras on my 200 its set me back $130,000 sorry mr toyota but your loosing my custom next time around if things dont get better was about to update my 100 to the 200 but no way now !!!!!

  7. 1 have a 200 Series land cruiser with three problems:

I am writing becuase I have read about Toyota ownners wordwide who have problem in communication

with Toyota about the problems of theirs cars. I got the impression that Toyota is in som kind of "denial" of any problems.

If you hav any information: Please Help me out: You can send a mail to: hilmar.hilmarsson@telia.com or hilmar.hilmarsson@miun.se

    1. Enormous oil consumtion. When 1 spooke to Toyota Sweden they did not want to help me.

I took the car to Iceland and they told me that it is "the enginge vacum oil pump" which is a very common

problem on the cars sold in Iceland. Before: oil consumption 1 to 1,5 liter a 1000 km. Now: Oil consumption = Zero.

If you call Toyota Iceland they can give you more information about this problem and how to fix it.

    2. Enormous fuel consumption: When i drive around town the fuel consumtion is abot 2,2 to 2,8 liter a 100km. Driving highway, 100 km/h at least 1,5 to 1,8.

Driving a little faster: 110-120: fuel consumption at least 1,8 to 2.0.

The sixth gear is not engagning until 125 and even thoug the gearbox sometimes engages the sixth gear, it won´t hold in this gear: Just a minor slope and the fifth gear will engage.

I heard about a gearbox recalibration. If you have any information so please give me the order number for this change.

    3. The accelratorot sticks: The car accelrates like crasy and the seat bealts fasten. This has happen three times.

The last situation was quite dramatic: I nearly crashed the car. The last time there where no floor mats in the car!

Is there anybody who had this accelrator problem on a Land cruiser 200?

Otherwise: I just love the car. This is the best car I had. I also own a Mercedes G400 CDI, and even thoug the Geländewagen is a very good offroader, the Land cruiser i just better.

    Hilmar, writing from Sweden.

    Hi Hilmar

best place for these questions is LCOOL lcool.org under the 200 section

there are many of us with oil consumption problems even after the pump is replaced fuel consumption dosent seem to be a problem here and with the gearbox re flash 6th is achievable just under 100kph join us in lcool more info avail there

Concerned Toyota Landcruser 200 Diesel Owners

    Group.

To the Dealer Principle / Service Manager, (…) Toyota)

RE: My (20…) 200 Series V8 Twin Turbo Diesel Landcruiser.

    Dear Sir / Madam.

My name is (…). On the (…) I purchased through your dealership a 20(..) 200 Series Landcruiser V8 Twin Turbo Diesel. I have had the vehicle serviced regularly since I obtained the vehicle as per the manufacturers log book standards.

I am also a member of a group of over 95 (and growing daily) concerned owners experiencing the essentially the same issues.

Whilst we appreciate that the 200 Series is a completely new model, and is bound to have some mechanical warranty issues, I have stuck by your dealership and my Landcruiser.

However, what we cannot condone is the issue of the relatively high oil consumption, accompanied with the excuses and ‘fobbing off’ from the dealership anymore.

Currently, I am using in the range of (…) and (…) between services, which are at 10000km intervals. This concerns me greatly.

Another issue that concerns me greatly is the ambiguity of information contained in the Landcruiser operation manual in regards to oil consumption.

    On page 289 it states under the heading;

    Engine Oil Consumption

    * The amount of engine oil consumed depends on the oil viscosity, the quality of the oil and the way the vehicle is drive.

    * More oil is used under driving conditions such as high speeds and frequent acceleration and deceleration.

    * A new engine consumes more oil

    * When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mine that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.

*Oil consumption: Max 1.0 litre per 1000km (which seems on laymen’s terms quite excessive.

    * If you consume more than 1.0 litre of oil per 1000 km contact your dealership.

It seems that some (most dealers that our group deals with) dealers are getting around this issue by overfilling the oil level to give the owner the impression that the oil consumption isn’t as bad as it may seem.

This is where the ambiguity of the matter comes into play.

    On page 290, still under the general heading of Engine Oil Consumption, there is a notice that states;

    * To prevent serious engine damage

Check the oil on a regular basis.

    * When replacing the engine oil

*Be careful not to spill engine oil on the vehicle component.

*Avoid overfilling, as the engine could be damaged

*Check the oil level on the dipstick every time you refill the vehicle.

*Be sure that the engine oil filler cap is properly tightened.

So, to sum up the issue so far is that my Diesel Landcruiser is using excessive amounts of oil, which can cause engine damage if it gets to low unnoticed, such as a long distance trip, and to combat this, the majority of dealers are over filling the oil volume to make the excessive oil consumption not look as bad, which in turn can damage the engine of our vehicles. This, in my opinion is a serious, fraudulent and negligent act from the dealers and I’m concerned that they may have (un)wittingly exposed themselves to legal ramifications and ongoing legal / media issues.

On a personal level, I have seen my oil level overfilled, by looking at the dipstick almost straight after a service, once getting home, I have observed to oil level on the dipstick some 20mm – 30mm OVER the full mark. I believe that this would have to have some detrimental effect on the longevity of the engine.

Some owners have had the vacuum pumps replaced and in some instances this has reduced the oil consumption rate, on some others it has not fixed a thing.

I was put on an oil consumption test, where I was told that my car had used just over the recommended amount of oil for the period of the test, but should be fixed by the oil vacuum fix, but months further on, I have heard nothing further about the vacuum pump fix , even through numerous follow ups such as phone calls and enquiries at service times.

As a group, we have been approached certain nation wide media outlets in relation to this oil consumption issue. They very interested in taking carriage of the matter due to the outstanding issues that Toyota are facing currently in the United States.

However, in the name of fairness, and some sound and prudent legal advice, we are going to give Toyota the opportunity of fixing the issue, or devising a reasonable solution to the oil consumption matter before we take the path of going to the media.

Also, in the name of fairness, we are not putting a defined time limit for the solution to be sorted out, but we would hope that Toyota would like to have the issue sorted out in a relative quick and prudent time to reduce the prospects on exposing itself to adverse public media attention and probable legal action from concerned owners

There is one last matter that is also concerning us. That is when the warranty period expires, Toyota Motor Company will wipe its hands of us

After spending the amount of money that we have on your product, we would like some reassurance that this won’t happen.

    Kind regards

  9. Has anyone else got unusual high oil consumption with their V8 Turbo Diesel, or is it just me ?? :(

Within a few weeks after delivery I noticed my new GXL Wagon was using oil. Not just a bit, but 1.4L in the first month alone ! (about 4000km). Now, 4 month later, my 4WD is undergoing yet another oil consumption test at my local Toyota Service Centre. It appears it is mostly obvious after driving long hill climbs. (i.e. Blue Mountains, Snowy Mountains). Just topped oil up again, this time with 1.1 L just after 3000km.

Finally heard today (3rd. party) that this is internally known within Toyota, but yet nothing done about it!

Anyone else with information or similar experience ?

Hi goto lcool.org and sighn up there you are by far not the only person with this problem there is a letter drafted up there in the 200 forum section for ppl to fill in with this exact complaint i think there is currently 95 on the list and more signing every day !!!

  10. I'am the proud owner of a Toyota VX Landcruiser and as I planned to tow a large caravan around Australia I decided to have a GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) suspension upgrade but the problem I have now experienced is 20mm sag in the suspension on the drivers side. The GVM upgrader & the Toyota dealer who had my vehicle for two days apiece were unable to solve the problem, so my question is, has anybody else experienced this problem & what was done to fix it ?

    Please help,

    Dino.

I just brought a new Petrol VX 200 series and it is in the shop today with a 25MM drop on the drivers side front and the VSC light keeps coming on! anyone had the same issue?

Ive had a couple of friends with this problem they fixed it themselves via re-leveling the KDSS system and haven't had it happen again since  mine has never had the problem :D from friends reports they sumise air in system has caused it but one will never know for sure

  11. As current owner of 80' Series LandCruiser since '97, I found my 120' Series Prado has more cheap plastic everwhere. My 80' Series LandCruiser is still going stronge and never give me a single trouble past 12 years. It is the best car I own so far.

Many of you own few LandCruiser over the years, I love to hear from you.

    :toast:

I currently own both a gxl 100 series TDI and the Sahara V8TTD 200 the 100 has been flawless perfect vehicle so far the 200 has been great too time will tell though

  12. Hi Harry,

If it's blowing black smoke it sounds like it's running very very rich. I suspect you may find your spark plugs quite sooty, although they won't be the cause of the problem.

I would hazard a guess that you have a Mass Air Flow sensor that is no longer working properly. Typical if the vehicle has been used offroad and quite likely to have been damaged by water especially if you do not have a snorkel. Another thing that damages MAF sensors is the use of oiled air filters, like a K&N or Finer Filter. The oil stains the sensor wires and it no longer provides the engine with accurate flow readings. Get rid of aftermarket filters and stick to genuine paper filters.

Given the age of the vehicle, I'd say this would be an item to replace anyway. There typically is NOT any error lights or warnings when the MAF sensor is out of spec. These are throw away items, so don't bother trying to clean the sensor wire. Just get a new one, and throw the old one in the bin or carry it around as a spare part which is potentially faulty.

Of course, check to see that your air filter is clean.

Check your auto transmission fluid condition - if it looks burnt, then you may be having transmission issues. Check your tyre pressures and alignment. Get rid of any unwanted weight or roofracks from your vehicle.

And disconnect the caravan when you're just driving down the road for that loaf of bread. :D

The oxygen sensor in the catalytic converter can also cause that problem makes it run very rich

  13. On several occassions in my GXL TD 200 Auto when I start the engine the 4WD LO and VSC warning lights flash and the Engine and Stability Control warning lights remain on. After several stop starts the lights all go off.

Today I started the engine and on putting in Drive it had no power, seemed like it was trying to start in 6th gear. I stopped it and on restart the same series of lights came on and again went off after several rrestarts.

My Toyota dealer says Toyota don't know what it causing it or how to fix it.

Has anyone had this issue and has been able to find a fix.

Thats weird i had the exact thing happen when i was going on holidays in january towing my van those exact lights came on and lost all power had to limp back to toyota 20kph flat strap and one mighty ****** off wife and 6 screaming kids they just said never heard of it b4 and said it was in limp mode reset comp and sent me on my way 2 mins down the road it started again :( chewed through 113L of diesel to do 300k :( topped up at a BP station 5 mins later the thing came alive and hasn't done it since and ive been on a few holidays since

seems like there is a computer glitch or something going on

  14. Landcruiser V8 Diesel 6-speed Automatic Transmission

    Hi,

I am new in this forum, I am from Austria in Europe and own the new Landcruiser since February 18th. From the beginning I was disappointed about the gearbox behavour, shifting gears from one to two and two to three never below 2000 Rpm (even at throttle less than 10%), no lockup function in 4th gear below 90km/h, no lockup function in 5th gear below 90km/h and no 6th gear available below 125km/h.

My dealer wanted to buy back my vehicle without even trying to understand my complaints, but he also wanted to cut off all the extras I have ordered for this vehicle, that would have created a net loss of more than €10.000,-- ; that is certainly too much to be a beta tester for Toyota.

Since this time I am fighting a terrible battle with Toyota Japan and Toyota Motors Europe, they are masters of ignorance of customers complaints, but now, the pressure is getting critical. Because my vehicle needs 40% more fuel at "just rolling" than published and certified by Toyota Motors, I do have a legal arm to force Toyota to modify the gearbox software. However, the next step is an official test by Toyota Motors Europe and then, possibly at court.

Here some return mails I got from Japan:

    Our Ref. NCR-0035609-07-E

    March 25, 2008

    To: Mr. Albert Welledits

    cc: TMME Company, TME

From: Tetsuya Otani, Customer Relations Division, TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION

    Dear Mr. Welledits:

Thank you for your email of March 18th and 22nd, 2008.

Fist of all, please accept our apologies for the delayed in reply.

We have confirmed your concerns with our technical department. We would

like to answer following four questions.

1: Gearshift from one to two and two to three never happened under 2000rpm,

even when throttle is opened 10% or less.

(Answer) According to our design spec, gear shifts one to two, two to three

at 2000rpm when throttle is opened 10% or less. Therefore we are not able to

judge the situation that you mentioned.

2: There is no converter lock up system in 4th gear

    (Answer) The lockup function would operate according to driving conditions;

therefore we estimate the situation that you mentioned might happen.

3: there is no converter lock up system at 5th gear at the speeds lower

    than 90km/h.

(Answer) Lockup function does not operate at the speeds lower than 90km/h,

therefore we estimate the situation that you mentioned might be normal

    according to our design spec.

4: there is no 6th gear available when the car drives under 125km/h

    (Answer) 6th gear does not operate at the speed lower than 125km/h;

therefore, we estimate the situation you mentioned might be normal.

We answered above questions based on your email information. There were

other concerns in your message; however, it is difficult to answer all of

your concerns. We would like to ask you to understand that our distributor

in your country “Toyota Frey” and Toyota Motor Europe NV/SA are

responsible for all customer’s concerns in your country. They will contact

you soon to inspect your veheicle again.

Although you requested us to modify software of automatic transmission of

your vehicle at your email, if our distributor “Toyota Frey” and Toyota

Motor Europe NV/SA judged your car as normal, we could not accommodate your

request. However We have taken the liberty of circulating your comments

among related divisions for their information. Please be assured that we

are committed to producing the highest quality vehicles in the world.

We are sorry that we cannot meet your request, however we would appreciate

your kind understanding on this matter.

President Tasashi Arashima of Toyota Motors Europe did not respond at all, from Toyota Motors Europe I did not get a single reply. This ignorance is unbelieveable. The only chance to increase pressure to Totoya is, when the vehicle does not match fuel consumption figures as claimed by Toyota to force Toyota to make necessary adjustment. With his Bull****-Software lower fuelconsumption rates never can be achieved.

From: Tetsuya Otani, Customer Relations Division, TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION

    Dear Mr. Welledits:

Thank you for your email of March 26, 2008.

We are sorry that we did not come up to your expectation.

First of all, we would like to supplement one point that 6th gear does not

operate at the speed less than 125km/h. This condition requires that you

keep accerating. However, once the throttle is off at the speed less than

125km/h and if it becomes at a steady speed, 6th gear will operate. Our

explanation in our previous reply was not sufficient. In any case, your

email has been referred to our distributor “Toyota Frey” and Toyota Motor

Europe NV/SA, and we will ask them to inspect your vehicle again.

Finally, although we repeat our explanation of the software of automatic

transmission, if our distributor “Toyota Frey” and Toyota Motor Europe

NV/SA judged your vehicle as normal, we could not accommodate your request.

We would appreciate your kind understanding on this matter.

Thank you for your taking the time to write.

There is a new program for the 6 speed box mine now engages just after 90kph and stays in 6th for longer under loads just contact your local dealer :)

  15. Has anyone seen the ad?. a Diesel Focus saying it can go further than a Corolla? Well DUR its a friggin Diesel lol. But i thought they wouldnt be aloud to bag out other brands?

I wouldn't worry too much the focus may run longer on a tank being a diesel but bet ya bottom dollar the corolla will still be going long after the focus is dead and buried :)

  16. Hi all ive recently purchased a new 200 series lancruiser sahara and used the sat nav for the first time the other day, works great only thing ive noticed is it dosent give current road speed limit or speed cameras.

As i have a navman s90i in the 100 series and it does display this im wondering if its possible to get the toyota sat nav to do the same ?

  17. hey all,

we are making a big shout out to all 4x4 owners in the Sydney / Newcastle area!

    WE NEED YOU!

After the ups and downs of the M_M cruise to stockton, we need more 4X4 out on the beach! It doesn't matter if you dont have a Toyota, so long as your 4x4 in is working well and the fan belts are all good :P

The date is still to be decided, but we are looking at mid August at this stage.

So round up the troop carriers and sound your horns, its time to go beach 4x4'in!

this reminded me of my last trip to stockton beach spent all day pulling out my dads 2004 patrol we have now nicknamed him bogpatrol :)

  18. I have an unusual problem. I have been trying to get engine ping fixed with my kluger.

The problem is due the other car pinging when using low octane fuel.

If 98 octane fuel is used the car does not notably ping.

I took the car to 2 Toyota dealers to be serviced and also look into the Ping problem.

Unfortunately I see that technicians are not able to resolve anything that is outside the normal car maintenance.

    The responses I have gotten..

(1st dealer) There is no problem.. the computer says that there has been no pinging.

(2nd dealer) WOW. this car is pinging. the computer says there is no pinging though. We are not sure what is exactly wrong. If you like we can try to fix this. It will cost you money for us to work on the car and try to find out what is wrong.

    Absolute bull**** I say.

Now I am no novice to mechanics and I know what will stop this. ( retard the timing )

The timing however cannot be mechanically retarded, it is controlled by the internal computer, (using all the sensors..etc. to optimise the motor's running).

So what I want is some way of getting my grubby mitts onto some wiring diagram.. software??

so I can look at fixing this myself.. ( have really really been discouraged by the quality of the service people at Toyota.

meanwhile I will just run the car on 98 octane while I can see about this problem.

I actually had this same problem on my subaru liberty back in 2000 it turned out to be a faulty knock censer

a nightmare of a car thats why i drive toyotas now :)

  19. Gday all

fuel usage in both my landcruisers is very good for their size and weight

landcruiser 1 is a gxl 100 series 4.2 turbo intercooled diesel averages 11.5 liters per 100k's

landcruiser 2 a 04/2009 200 series sahara twin turbo intercooled V8 diesel averaging so far with 2000k on clock 10.8 liters to the 100k :) extreemly impressed indeed
