I borught a tarago 89 3y 2.0 Auto about 3 weeks ago, I PLANNED to do some of the eas coast in, however I don't that will be ahppening anytime soon.
When I bought it, everything looked fine, honest! I've bought tones of cars before...
Anyway, besides the cold starting problem (which I think is the distributor...) There seems to be an odd noise come coming from under the drivers seat, when the cars been drive for about 15min.
Its a squeaking noise / clunky noise that only seems to happen at 20kmph+ It usually happens when im just bobing along on the road, not nesesarly when i'm going over bumps.
Any ideas on what I should check first? I'm hoping its just an engine mount, but there isnt much play on the engine (when rev'd) and the gear box changes fine.....
Suspension seems ok, we rocked the hell out of it and it didnt make a sound....
The exhaust is blowing alittle, so could it be the manifold?
I ask because i'm a pom.... and im scared of going to the mechanics without advice...
I have really been dooped on here by an american dude.... I jsut wanna fix it and get on m way now :( girlfriend is so gutted we cant do the trip.....
so, please, find it in your heart to help :)
for the record, i payed AU$2600 for a 200km tarago with 11months rego...

positive it's gear oil? it could be a rear main seal chief
I think so bro, it was light brown in colour, and was dripping from the trany. And Ideas of how much something like that would cost to sort out?
Thanks for your reply

I have a DX tarago, 1990, shes runs well, and as long as I've had her shes never slipped a gear.
I notice a few spots of oil on the driveway, thought nothing of. but, after along drive I checked under the car, to my horror i saw freaquent drops of trany oil leaking.
If there are no symptoms of gear slipping and everything is running smoothly would that indicant a broken gasket?
Its an auto trans, I was wondering if any knew anything about this model.
thanks

I'm looking for a 4 runner to cruise around Australia in.
It will probably be an old model, are there any specific problems I should look out for?
Any recommendation on a better car / model? I have about $5000AU to spend

To remove brake squeal you need to remove the shiny smooth surfaces on the discs and pads...
Get some rough sand paper and sand down all contacting surfaces of the discs and pads to roughen them all up...
Your brake noise will be gone...
It's call 'glazing' and it occurs when light braking applications are all that are used...
I try and hit the brakes hard every now and again (when it's safe to do so) to keep them from glazing and it works without a worry :) ...
Good tip, You can also get brake cleaner that help remove glazing. It also helps reduce brake dust ;)

well ive just finished this mod the other day its relitively simple provided you solder and properly insulate the joins youll have no issues with it
**NOTE THIS IS A GUIDE ONLY IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ISSUES THAT MAY ARISE FROM THIS**
what youll need:
2x stop/tail globe holders i cut mine out of an old honda from the wreckers i got them for free
2x stop/tail globes bout 5-10 bucks
soldering iron
solder
drill if you really want
insulating tape or heatshrink
silicone gasget sealer
first pull out the tail light and unplug it from the wiring harness the inner lamp hole isnt cut for our models so itll have to be cut out you can use a drill to drill around the top to cut out the hole but i found just melting it out was much easier.
this is the part that needs to be cut out
this is the side i tried drilling i needed to clean it up with a soldering iron on the edges
the plug i used 3 wires one for earth, park and stop
the wires off the plug needed extending the wiring goes as follows
white/green stripe= earth
green/white stripe= brake
green= park lamp
these wires i refer to are the wires on the the tail light that you need to hook the extra light socket onto.
do not cut the wiring on the tail light just strip back the insulation and wrap the additional wires around them and solder them and either tape them up so they dont touch the other wires or use heatshrink if youve got it
putting in the globes seeing as theres no nodules to clip the globe housing into the tail light so i just melted the tabs off the sides of the globe holders
then i ran a bead of silicone gasget around the part where the globe holder goes into the tail light and simply pushed the gobe into the hole and waited for it to dry then reinstalled the tail light.
heres one side done
and both sides done
wow excellent, very easy to follow

has any one else here got a tarago RV built after 1990?just wandering if they've done any majour engine mods,if so please reply to this and if yah can a picture'd be nice.I'm thinking of a turbo but i heard they can't be placed under the seatwhere the engine is?
A turbo... that would scare the crap out of me in a 90 tarago.... i feel unsafe driving mine as it is! last thing i'd want is more power
A turbo can be fitted to must cars, but you'll need to make space for an inter cooler, and I have no idea where you would start on the 90 tarago... there little space as it is..

Hi all Tarago owners
I would like to change spark plugs on my Tarago 1994.Could someone help me ?
The engine is found under the seat next to the driver.Could it be under my seat ?
I am getting a light ignition problem and bought titanium heads spark plugs as they yield heaps of Kms.
I have noticed that on short trips driving in town, its a drunkard.Over long distances it performs quite economical for an 8 seater.
Thanks
Thanks for your tips Rolla !! :
thanks for the tips also

isnt it illegal to use HIDS without adjustable headlights?
Sorry it is illegal in the UK to do this , not sure about AUS, but i dont think Aussies even care about others on the road anyway :P
-
Price-wise you could just get a HID conversion kit off Ebay too i guess
Just make sure you have adjustable headlights, else your going to be blinding people on the road, causing accidents and generally annoying people....

I have a 90 tarago 2.0l petrol AUTO, in great cond, done over 200ks around Australia etc.
However recently when the car is cold it struggles to start, and the only way to get it going is to press the accelerator pedal 4 times then start the engines. So basically flooding the engine starts the car..... however it will the some times struggle to stay alive until its warm.
It idles low but i don't think that's the problem. i have Wd40'd everything, put fuel cleaner in the tank... not sure what else to do...
Could it be the distributor cap? Its done allot of miles, maybe its time for a new one...
Any help would be awesome
Thanks guys
I have an odd noise, I would like your oppinions please!
