  1. I have two Coronas, an RT132 Liftback 81 and and XT130 Wagon also 81 or 82, both were parked out front of my place and had each of their driver's side rear-view mirrors kicked off thanks to some lowlife. They are both in great condition and the Liftback I had just finished doing a full tune/valve adjustment/new clutch and flywheel to get a safety cert - she would have been gone in another week or so. Totally gutted to say the least... If any member has any suitable mirrors lying around or if they or one of their mates have an old one of these parked around the place that they could spare the mirrors off I would love to hear from you. They appear to be identical mirrors between the two cars - they are the black plastic type that is part of the window frame not the screwed-on chrome job (more's the pity, the chrome one would be easier to replace). If anyone can help by selling me the right item I would be very stoked and some faith in human nature restored, must admit I am struggling to find any right now (either mirrors or faith in human nature). Nick 0433 843 730 I am in Brisbane northside, can travel to pick up or pay postage within reason.
  2. Yeah I was a bit worried it might be that. It does have a timing chain but I'm not sure how to make sure the tension is correct or how to adjust it. It looks like a motor out job. I wonder if it is just harmless racket!
  3. Hi all, My partner's RT132 (81) Corona Liftback has started making a rattling noise at idle. When you bring the revs up it is less apparent. It sounds like it could be in the valve gear. I bought a new valve cover gasket so I could pull it off and check/adjust the valves and reassemble everything. Any tips, opinions or advice would be appreciated. Motor is 18R-C. Have a look and a listen here: Thanks! Nick
  4. And here's my previous trusty rusty wagon in a very sad state out the back - being used as a parts storage shed at the moment! And also used as a hotel by the local wildlife - check the furry friend under the dash...
  5. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll probably check the filter first - as it's slightly easier to get to. May take a couple of days as I'll have to go for a run on the Gateway to see if it's worked!
  6. That's right, 1.9 litres of throbbing power! The liftback has the somewhat smoother 18R-C... Don't need to crank the tunes quite so loud :)
  7. Thanks for the reply! By fuel pickup you mean where the fuel exits the tank?
  8. The other day my XT130 wagon started playing up when travelling at high speed (well, the 110 speed limit anyway!). It started staggering or misfiring - like it was starving for fuel or something. My first guess was fuel pump or crud in the fuel, it does have two filters though. Pulling over to the verge, I would wait ten minutes or so and then take off with no problems - it accelerated as well as normal with the boot fully planted - doesn't look like a dead fuel pump there! Then after half an hour driving it would come back. Between Tewantin and Brisbane it did this about five times and took me an extra hour or so longer than it should have. The next day I had to drive all over the north side with a trailer for a few hours, part of it in peak hour traffic. So it got plenty hot, but no staggering or misfiring whatsoever. It only seemed to do it when doing 90-110kph. The manual suggests coil, accelerator pump, points, and a few other things - but could anyone take a stab at a possible cause that would be worth checking first - as spare time is in short supply around here! A few weeks back I did a service including new plugs, points, condenser, rotor, air filter, oil change.
  9. Hi all, I'm Nick - mid-thirties and living on Brisbane's north side. Currently driving an 81 Corona XT130 wagon (Aussie made), my partner drives an RT132 Liftback of same year. We go in for budget motoring around here - I had another wagon before the current one and came to like them for reliability and low cost, if not performance! Ah well, can't have everything. Both our current Coronas were low mileage and well looked after when they came to us, they are all usually very cheap but I waited for the right vehicles to come on the market instead of buying something that had already been driven into the ground. We like them and the ease of maintenance has allowed us to keep them going with a minimum of hassle. We don't really have the time or the inclination to modify them or whatever, they are more in the line of workhorse vehicles. I'd be keen to chat with other owners and hopefully get a few tips on issues that come up from time to time. The technology level is low enough for my spanner skills but what with family time constraints it's always great to get other people's input on problems instead of taking the long way around troubleshooting. I know they are the type of car that few people get excited over but many would have owned or driven one at some stage so there must be a few people out there with some knowledge!
