I purchased a used 2007 ZR6 and have exactly the same issue. I did purchase from a dealer so it's going back to them tomorrow for them to 'assess'. Terry Shields did do a service on it and quoted the same price as ashren totaling $8,500 including labour! The guy at Terry Shields was very helpful and did tell me that it may be fine for 6 to 12 months before needing work. I'm not sure how I will go with them but it may have to be submitted to Fair Trading to get an outcome. It is a quite surprising for Toyota to have such a huge issue without a recall, particularly when it is such an expensive job. Ceeber, how did you go?

Old thread but I thought it would be better to use it rather than create a new one. I have found this forum to be very helpful in car searches and also in working out how to fix things :) Just bought a 2007 Presara with 52k on the clock less than a month ago and found exactly the same issue. The car is 3.5 years old so it is out of warranty. Took it to Ryde Toyota in Sydney and they were adamant that it was a fault of the previous owners and not a manufacturing fault (which I found hard to believe). They also said that the whole console would have to be replaced and that would cost over $500 just for parts alone, which was a bit ludicrous considering that only a bit of plastic under the bolts were cracked. I am considering taking it to another dealer to get a second opinion but I have a feeling I may get the same story. Being a third owner (the second owner only had it for 5 months before he had to go overseas) and out of warranty doesn't help my case. However the rest of the car is in pretty good nick, the leather and interior even still have a new smell to it so I find it hard to believe that it's had a hard life. Any thoughts on whether it's possible to fix this yourself or even whether the cost I got quoted is justifiable? Cheers
