  1. About to do a brake fluid change, like I've done for years on other cars, when someone mentioned that on the ZRE you've got to disable the ABS system before you start..

So my question is, Is this correct ? and if so, do you simply remove the ABS fuse, and replace it when you're finished, or will just disconnecting the battery do the job ??

And lastly, how on earth does a simple fluid change affect the ABS anyway ?? and what would happen if you didn't disconnect it ??

    Thanks in advance... :g:

  2. And one know how many parts I need to remove to get to the oil filter my old man does not want to go back to toyota dealer for oil changes after they got done at a speed camera during service.. please help me.. and feel sorry for me.. if anyone has a workshop manual I'd love that too!!!

If it's pre mid '10'ish it's got the normal spin/on spin/off throwaway filter.

After that they went to a replacement filter INSIDE the spin off outer canister.

Apparently the canisters can "round off" very easily, so you must use the proper removal tool (about $25 off ebay).

Be sure to clean inside the canister thoroughly (something my dealer cant be bothered to do) and remember to fit the new O ring supplied with the new filter ($22'ish from Toyota).

  3. Toyota somehow fell behind when it came to engines in the corolla as its only available with a 1.8 when every other hatch on the market is a 2.0l or a turbo 1.6/1.8.

I plan on rectifying that with a (hopefully) 3zrfe engine.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm ordering the car end of this year but wanna get the engine sorted so that when it arrives it can be swapped out straight away, no fuss etc. Was thinking of buying a new engine out of a 2010 Ultima (sedan) but haven't contacted toyota to get a price yet.

guessin at $13,000 plus $4500 for local mods and fitting....THEN given it's not an ultima is it ADR legal..? why would you bother. ??

  4. Does anyone know where i can buy foglights for the 2010 facelift as there doesn't seem to be any on ebay,thanks...

..I cant find any either, probably still too soon for the factories in China to start making stock for the facelift .?

..same deal with assorted Chrome trims, plenty of special stuff for the update SEDAN (very popular in asia) but little so far to suit the hatch popular here in Oz..

  5. I'm confused, what is an oil filter cartridge? and plastic? I've had a quick look at my oil filter before but it looks like a normal metal screw on type, have I missed something?

I have one service left till warranty ends then I'll do it myself so I better investigate I think..

I have a genuine filter removal tool for my 4AGE filters which I thought may fit the ZRE and it was a perfect fit for the Valvoline replacement too (Z386)

I'll check if it fits the ZRE

..mid 2010 ZRE's, Toyota went from the no-brainer spin-off/spin on steel filter (yours) to a plastic housing (mine) containing a paper oil filter (04152-37010), you were lucky enough to have the pre plastic one..

  6. ..well just bought one on the 'bay from a seller in NZ, 65mm is the size, and it was $23.40 incl postage.

I CANNOT BELIEVE..!! that Toyota have done this, the actual canister is made from PLASTIC ! not metal, if the perfectly fitting tool is not used, the edges of the 14 sides can easily burr over possibly making removal or replacement eventually impossible.

Also the parts dept at my local dealership, said replacement takes their workshop twice as long and that actual cleaning of the inside of the canister is very important ( I wonder how many wont bother to do this, or even wont bother to change the filter at all.?? )he also said it was a cost cutting exercise, although Toyota are spinning it as "more environmentally friendly".

..cant believe I've just completed a whole thread just talking to myself..! all good but..

  7. Castrol Magnatech 10W-40. Does the job for me.

Magnatec is very good but is a stickier oil..as Castrol made it to be, generally ok for early multi valve(incl IZZ-FE), and great for non multi valve engines,

On dual vvti's, and vvtli's needing very thin oil getting to the top of the head very quickly on cold start-up, when using Magnatec, lift the oil filler cap periodically, and look and check for brown sludge build up at the top of the head on cars travelling low kms.....and if seen then change the oil more frequently (say..5000kms max).

    Just my opinion...

  8. ..My personal choice for a ZRE, is use Castrol Edge 5w-30 BUT CHANGE IT YOURSELF..!! call me cynical, but in my personal experience, some Dealers are so $$$ orientated you may not actually end up with the oil you bought and trustingly gave them, actually ending up in your sump..!!

In my dealership, (not Toyota) we had so many apprentices take home the good stuff, and just fill your car with OEM oil...

If you're under warranty, you just need to cop it sweet, accept and trust whats given to you, but be sure to change the oil ( and, if you can, FILTER too ) YOURSELF at 3 months to ensure that the actual oil ( and new filter) YOU choose is in your sump for a reasonable time..

I Always use OEM filters, and a MAJOR brand oil only, the others often don't have the necessary $$ and expertise to completely ensure the very latest technology in purity and additives...just my opinion.

BTW.. Castrol used to offer an oil analysis service, dont know if they still do..? send them a sample, in their provided container, at oil change time, and they'd analyse it and send you back a comprehensive analysis report of all the contaminants therein..anyone know if they still do it..???

  9. post-54-12874765341_thumb.png...thanks again for that, and yes it used to be a neat system ( the Morris Minor used it..!)

but the spin off filter has always been a no brainer to use, and having worked in the industry for way too long (years ago),

I know how easy it is to NOT change the filter (just clean the outside) and that's $20 profit on every job, and you'd never EVER know it hadn't been changed...dont laugh, this was a very common occurence.

With this ZRE154 system you'd never be able to check if the filter'd been changed ( I used to UV mark my old spin-offs).

Ben, thanks for the link, it does indeed confirm the paper insert theory to be correct...

  10. Thanks for your help guys...but now I'm a bit confused..

I'm sort of understanding that the '10 ZRE's have a spin-off canister, inside of which is a replaceable paper filter element ??

..do I then just spin off the canister, pull out the dirty paper element, clean the canister, put in the new paper filter and spin it back on..??

..the pommy cars in the 60s used that system .!!

    ...just wondering

  11. I drive a Vitz 1.5 Factory TRD turbo. i have around 55,000km on my clock and my engine is quite new. Its the 1nz-fe engine with a TRD Turbo kit. I have few oils available to choose between. I am fast driver and I would like to know which one is the best for my engine and to get better performance as well. The oils to choose between are: Motul 8100 Excess (5w40) , Motul Turbolight (10w40) , Castrol Edge Sport (5w40) , Shell Helix Ultra (5w40).

I use the TRD oil filter.

A quick response would be appreciated as my servicing is due soon...

    Thx TRD TEAM...

Absolutely Castrol Edge Sport 5w40 plus TRD (or Toyota original) filter....no contest.

  12. Completely Luurve my ZRE Conquest, but a bit worried about the big amount of black front pad dust on the alloys in a very short time, (I'm an easy driver).

I know many Euro cars brakes now have a very short life, soft pads AND rotors, both often requiring replacement in as little as 40k at a dealer cost of up to $1000. (Astra).

My ZZE had an awesome run on the front pads (half worn at 38k), can anyone tell me if the ZRE has gone the soft pad and rotor way, same as the euros...?? (Hope not).
