  1. thanks, the white smoke stopped, l think it was just the cold wet weather, the garage said there was a gasket seal leaking oil but they fixed it and theres no more oil leaks , the only problem is its using lots of oil , somewhere about about 1 litre per 2,000 km- 5000 km range, l travel 1,000 km a month and l live in the country, they said becasue its an old car it will burn lots of oil , so additives designed to slow oil burn wont be much use ou think. ;lm saving up for another car, l just want to keep this car running for another 6 months until lve saved enough to get a another car , it still runs really well and l havent noticed any problems, l guess l will just keep topping the oil up a bit once a month and keep the diptick on the half way level so it wont run low
  2. Theres some additives you can put in like Repco engine sto[p leak and nulon oil flush and others, could any of those help reduce oil consumption or maybe help clean the engine and impove it
  3. If its using too much oil and theres no leak they can find or theres worn out rings or valve stem seals does that mean the engine will soon die and apart from spending thousands its time to replace the car as its 20 years
  4. theres some white smoke on start up , l tohught it was just condensation l think l will take it back to the garage to get it checked , there was an oil leak but they said they fixed it, there might be another leak
  5. Thanks in terms of oil use the last 500kms , its gone from full to 3/4 full, so it has used a quarter. If you look at the dipstick between the top full notch and the bottom notch its gone from full top notch to 3/4 way down , so it has used about a quarter. In terms of ML of oil how much is that. HOw bad is that for 500 kms
  6. THanks , no theres no rattles or strange sounds on start up but theres some white smoke or steam from the exhaust only on first start up for the day , but l think that just because its cold and wet , the garage l go to is RACV accredited and they do RACV road assistance also does that mean it should have a good repuatation with good mechanics , l used to get it serviced at a TOyota dealership garage , do you think a toyota dealership garage would be better .
  7. thanks, my next service is in november , do you think it will be ok to continue using the 15w 40w until then or should l take it in and get them to put in 5w 30w oil now. Also should l ask for sythetic and not mineral oil
  8. thanks yes they fixed the oil leak on the gaskets ,but they said because its old it will use more oil then normal, theres no blue smoke but l have been geting some white smoke but only on start up, then it goes away, it might be condensation
  9. lm not sure if its steam of white smoke, when l first start the car for the day what looks like white smoke comes out the exhaust but after l have driven a few minutes it stops and doesnt happen again for the rest the day,for example if l start the car a second time in the afternoon l wont get any white smoke . Does that sound like its steam and condesation because the white smoke or steam stops after a few minutes, if it was a serious problem like a blown gasquet would the white smoke not stop after a few minutes but keep going all day while the engines on
  10. thanks there was no smell from the coolant. l still get the white smoke when l first start the car for the day then after a few minutes is gone, is that normal ow do l know if its just consdensation or something more serious
  11. Hi l have a 20 year old camry, a few weeks ago l had a gasket cover broken leaking oil and they repaired it. LAst week l have noticed white smoke from my exhaust but after l have driven a couple of minutes it stops and it only happens on the first start up for the day, for example when l start the car in the morning l get some white smoke, but if l go for another drive a few hours later in the day l dont get any white smoke on start up. Its been cold and raining past week, my garage has a roof but no doors so the car is exposed overnight to the weather. IS the white smoke on start up simple condensation from the cold and rain or could it be something more serious that l should get checked
  12. lm looking to buy a used camry in the future . my budget is around the $15,000 to $17,000 range. l guess my budget could put me at any year model between 2007 and 2017 . in that year model range is there any year model that better or more reliable then others not not as good as others ?t is there a particular year model l should look to buy or avoid buying?. l think they stopped making camrys in Australia after 2013, were the camrys made outside Australia after 2013 as good or as reliable?
  13. thanks , what would normal oil usage for an old camry like mine be, whats normal and when should l worry. l do 1,000 km a month, How many months from full top notch on the oil dipstick to bottom notch on the dipstick would be normal
  14. THnaks, the 15/40 oil he put in was Mineral oil, l was wondering why he put in mineral oil and not synthetic oil? is mineral oil better for an old camry with high Km's or is sythetic oil better or no difference?
  15. no the brakes have been working well and noticed nothing wrong and no suddering but they said l need new pads soon and they were going to machine the rotors, l will ask them if they really need to machine them
  16. thanks so 15w 40w wont hurt my camry . they said its mineral oil, would sythetic be better or no real difference, if l top up my oil does it matter if l use sythetic
  17. Hi l have a 20 year old camry that needs new brakes, they said they are going to put in new brake pads and machine the rotars for $400, is that a fair price, also l think l read its better to repace the rotars rather then machine them? is it ok to machine the rotars or should l ask for new rotars
  18. Hi l have a 20 year old camry done 300,000 kms, my old garage always put in 5w- 30w synethic engine oil but l went to a new garage and they put in 15w - 40w mineral oil they said that the best for an old car like mine. l had been having a probelm with oil leakage and oil use. Do you think they are correct that the 15w - 40w oil is better , could this oil do any harm to the engine
  19. thanks the last couple of years l noticed its using more oil, so 1 litre per 5000 km would be pity normal for a 20 year old camry with 300,000 kms; is 5W -30W the best oil and what brand is best or are all the brands like pity much the same
  20. hi l have a 2003 camry, its using about 1 litre per 5,000 km on country highways, how worried should l be with that oil use, its 5w-30w
  21. Hi l have a 2003 camry , done 330,000 km l live in the country. Engine is running well with no problems except oil useage. l check the dipstick each couple of weeks and when it gets below half way mark l top up about 100ml of 5w-30w oil to keep it at half way. l think the oil burn rate is around 1 litre per 5,000 km How bad is that for a car of my age, could it be a serious problem. Also how many litres of oil is in the oil tank, if the dipstick goes from full notch to bottom notch how much oil has it used
  22. thanks yes at the last service they said " RHS lower control arm rear bushing is cracked recommended replacing" they said its safe to drive until the next service in october and it should be replaced then, they quoted $1300, yes someone else also said thats expensive. l think l will get a second quote from another mechanic. if l spend the money getting this repaired then l would hope it lasts another two years before something serious or expensive goes wrong
  23. hi just to update , l got it serviced today and they said the lower control arm rear bushing is cracked and needs to be replaced for $1,300 within a year , apart from that they said theres nothing seriosly wrong ,l cannot decide if l should get it repaired and keep the camry or sell it and get a newer car
  24. Hi l own a 2003 toyota camry since new, its done 330,000 l live in the country and do about 15,000 kms a year, always got it serviced on time its never broken down and never had any serious problems. l hope to keep it for another 3 years and another 50,000 kms. Do you think l will be able to get that much more out of it without anything serious or expensive going wrong ? l know you cannot give a definite answer, just a guess of the liklehood.
  25. Hi l topped up the engine oil in my 2003 toyota camry , l just want to make sure l used the correct oil the oil l used was correct and wont cause any problems, l used valvoline 10W - 30 W on the packet it said ' Dura blend for direct injection and trubo injection engines" does it matter if my engine is not direct injection, is this oil OK heres is a link of what l used Valvoline 1L DuraBlend 10W-30 Engine Oil - Bunnings Australia
